It really depends on the particular recipe you mix it into, there are a couple of recipes floating around the net that use perlite, come out hard-faced and stand just nearly 3000 degrees for a sustained amount of time. It all depends on the rest of the recipe
Trust me, this perlite isn't coarse! Medium at best but this might be considered to be coarse by Vigoro for all I know. It seems like every brand has there own opinion on what "coarse" is. What I thought was funny is the fact that the pictures show different grades, lol. Aren't the pictures there to help you see what grade it is? Anyway, I've bought different brands of perlite elsewhere that said it was coarse on the bag but it wasn't coarse either. It really depends a lot on the brand and it seems like its getting harder and harder to find "true" coarse perlite. I bought two bags of this stuff and I cant use it because its too fine. It would sure help if the bags at least had a transparent area so that you could actually see it before you buy it, not to mention maybe actually printing the "grade" on the bag, but like I said, that can be misleading.
I use both with great results plus cow manure.
Perlite will give air into the soil, at least it seems to do that for me. When I have used some potting soils w/o perlite, it compacts and the plants don't seem to thrive as well. When I add the perlite, it loosens it up and helps the root to breathe.
the bag is light weight, you can pick up with one hand.
Intended for potted plants. not for garden soil.
What are you trying to do with it in a fishtank? If you are making a plant terarium, fine. If you are trying to use it in place of gravel,it will not work as perlite floats on top of water.
Thank you for your question. Please contact you local store regarding your inquiry.
I personally think that if it works, if you mix it with soil and then you just water with a balanced pH.
