Questions & Answers

Organic & Natural?

Brand: ORGANICS Vigoro. Does this 'Organic & Natural Potting Mix' contain any ingredients that are genetically modified? I just got a bag and am concerned about putting my strawberries into GM chicken waste...
Asked by: Jack
Organic products have to be certified as Organic which means this products have to undergo rigorous testing before it can be certified as organic. Organic potting soil, potting mix and composts are non GMO.

Can I use this in my flower beds

Asked by: Boomer
Works fine for any growing process I can think of. I'm using it for veggies, ferns, palms and flowers. If you have an existing flower bed you may want to try to see if they have a "garden soil" product for enriching your existing soil. It would be less expensive and should work fine.

Where are the ingredients listed? I find none. Is there vermiculite in it? Thanks

Asked by: Littlej
There's no vermiculite listed in it, but up close it looks like there are very small amounts of it in the soil. Contents differ by region but it likely contains: peat, rice hulls, compost, spaghum peat moss, and coir.

Good for seed starting?

I tried starting seeds with this and nothing grew. Is it the fertilizer? Is there Atrizine?
Asked by: jamesvrude
If it contained atrizene, I would expect it to be listed on the SDS [Safety Data Sheet]; it is not. I have started seeds with this product. Here's what one prominent "seed" producer says in general ... "Seedlings are very delicate. For the best chance of success, start them in a fresh, sterile seed-starting mix that is light and fluffy to hold just enough moisture. If the growing medium is too wet or not sterile, disease can strike. If it is too heavy or sticky, fine new roots won't be able to push through it. You can use bagged seed-starting mix, or buy compressed pellets of peat or coir (coconut husk fibers) that expand when wet. Since seeds contain the nutrients the seedlings will need, fertilizer isn't important in your seed-starting mix."

Customer Reviews

32 qt. Potting Soil Mix is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad batch cost me dearly I purchased 10 bags of this stuff to fill my garden boxes, hanging containers and deck containers. Stuff looks like mulch and everything either died or simply wouldn't grow. All that money on plants and soil lost and for the first time in a dozen years I have no fresh chard or squash. I took down the hanging plants and threw them away. I wait all winter for our growing season and I am very disappointed. I did not have the money to start all over again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So far, so good... After reading quite a few reviews, I became skeptical in regards to this potting soil and the fear of bugs (gnats). Perhaps it is because I mixed it with some other potting soil....but so far, so good. It does retain moisture and perhaps it's because this seems more "mulch-like" and so that makes sense. I'm recommending this because I haven't had an issue with the product. There is another brand of soil that I prefer mainly because it seems more like soil than this product. According to the packaging this will feed your plants, flowers, fruit, etc. for 3 months, I'd have to agree with that statement. This is purely my opinion, but I would buy this product only to mix with a more "dirt-like" potting soil. Hope this helps :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointment I purchased this potting soil to repot 2 of my plants on 9/16/2015. It has been approximately 2 weeks since I repotting and I have a gang of Fungus Gnats now invading and violating my plants. Now I have to go through the process of killing the adults, killing the eggs, getting rid of this soil and repotting again. I AM NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER AT ALL.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst purchase due to fungus gnats destroying and stunting my young veggie plants. Very Furious!!! I was so happy at first to find such rich, moist potting mix for my grow boxes. One month later, my seedlings have stunted and dying due to fungus gnats hiding in the soil. Can you imagine starting your spring veggie harvest this way? I'm extremely angry due to the fact I spent so much time and energy growing my plants from seed, only to see them die off from nasty fungus gnats! Not just a waste of your money, but it will destroy your young garden, too!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Potting Soil Vigoro's organic potting soil is my prefer potting mix. This is a certified premium grade organic potting soil The "soil-less" soil is an excellent medium to use in container and as a soil amendment in your garden. Though the medium is soft, and fluffy, it has a lot of bulk and won't compact so easily. The peat moss is well refined without large chunks, enables it to retain great level of moisture. Drainage is important, the soil contains perlite to help with drainage and aeration. As far as nutrients, they are all made of organic matters. The NPK is minimal, but sufficient and should feed your plant up to 3 months. You'll find compost, rice hulls, poultry litters, and forest products in this product. When it comes to potting soil, always choose the best quality. You always want to give your plants the best, whether it's house plants or young seedlings. Your plants will thank you. Overall, this is an excellent potting soil--my preferred potting mix.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for dry climates This is a solid blend for potted plants. I used some in our raised beds as well. The mix is heavy on small pieces of mulch. It still has enough soil to grow most plants though. I did use worm castings to amend the soil even further, I felt that made it a little tighter. I like this blend for its water retention. The mulch will really help outdoor plants in arid environments (California) to hold in their moisture and stay alive. There are parts of the bag that were not well mixed, mostly mulch. I mixed those parts up, and it seemed fine. I could see some bags being too heavy of the mulch with this mix. If you find that, mixing it with some compost does even it out.
