Q:can I use these pins for the heavy edging about 5" tall?

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out about our spikes. These nylon anchoring spikes are ideal for No-Dig style edgings and other general gardening uses. We would not recommend them for a dig-in style of edging. Instead, we suggest the Vigoro metal anchoring stakes. If you are referring to a different style of edging, please feel free to contact us at customersupport@westlake.com so we can suggest the proper anchoring tools for the job.

While putting the spikes in, more then half the heads snapped off. Hammer, rubber mallet, nylon hammer, deadblow, made no difference. Bought four packs, so thats $40 in the trash. Ones I put in last year are all starting to back out of the ground.

I used it to hold down my vinyl edging and it works great. I put them about 48" o.c. (hint: unroll vinyl edging and lay it flat on your lawn, in the sun, for 30 minutes prior to using. Helps get those edges nice and straight)

Features: product has a twisted shape from top to bottom point and I believe it made it easier to drive in hard soil which I liked the most about it. Likes: drives in easily...love this product Owned: about 2-3 weeks and have used previously 2 months ago. Expectations: Met expectations when using with Vigro no dig edging.

I got a chance to check out the Vigoro 8" Anchoring Spike (model #1985-24HD-16 that came in a pack of 24 individual spikes). They are designed by Vigoro to secure their "No-Dig Edging", especially when going around curves or circles. However, I tested them on a bit of a different use. For my garden borders I have painted 2x4's that I sink an inch or so into the ground. These garden borders are adjacent to concrete sidewalks, the privacy fence, alongside the garage, etc., not a free-standing design you might put around a tree or pond. Traditionally I've used metal spikes (actually, the ones that are used to secure vinyl gutters to a house), driven through metal band strapping attached to the 2x4's. That is helped along by putting shims of 2x4 lumber driven vertically along the wooded border. I wanted to see if I could use the Vigoro nylon spikes in place of the metal ones. As you can see by the photo below the Vigoro spikes are too large in circumference to fit through even the large holes on metal band strapping. However, the main force in keeping the border in place is, as noted, 2x4 shims driven in next to the border and secured via carriage bolt to the border. So, I tried driving a Vigoro spike straight down next to the 2x4, but the head on the Vigoro spike isn't large enough to "catch" on the 2x4 and secure it. Driving the spike at an angle, however, does give enough grip to secure the 2x4. I wouldn't recommend just the Vigoro as a single point of retention - they slide out of the soil too easily when used in this manner. However, used in conjunction with 2x4 shims the Vigoro spikes do tighten things up a bit. Another method, which I didn't need to try, would be to drill a hole through the 2x4 and drive the Vigoro spike through that into the ground. Since the spikes are 8" long you would have more than half their length in the ground after passing through the 2x4 lumber. I think that, if used for their original purpose in securing "No-Dig Edging" they would be satisfactory. For my purpose - again, not what Vigoro designed them to do - they are marginal at best. I don't think it fair to mark down the rating because I used them "out of purpose" - but I wanted to post my results in case someone else was thinking of using them to secure lumber. They work much better when hammered completely into the ground, as they are designed to do. Unfortunately my design allows only half of the spike to be in the soil, the rest being in the 2x4. They come with a 1-year warranty against defects and, of course, the 90-day Home Depot Return Policy. HTH Regards, Jim

You definitely need these extra spikes when laying the Vigoro border.

I bought these for a landscaping issue that I had. These are a nice size and are strong. And its a pack of 24! They are a good color that blends in with plantings. I used them to help train cedar trees that I have been cutting to create interesting shapes. I attached 12 ga. wire to the stakes and then to branches to train the trees to open up so that they can be topiaried as they grow.I think most people would use these to help hold down landscape fabric, but they have so many uses for outdoor projects.
