HOW TO INSTALL ON EXISTING POST ?

Asked by RAIL September 8, 2019

Answers

The only way to get this on an existing post is to cut the post as close to the surface as possible. Unfortunately, if there's more than 2 posts, you'll have to cut them all and remount as many as you cut. Usually these are for a new installation, but can reinforce a rusting fence post (if you cut it first)

I have 1" posts, what can I use to close the gap on the flanges?

I would use silicone caulking. It is quite flexible for filling the gaps. It sets up and it still stays flexible and it can be painted over to hide the gaps.

I used these somewhat unconventionally, I have wooden redwood steps that curve down from my driveway to the walkway. I placed the floor flange on each step with the matching spindle and attached a railing bracket to the top -then attached a redwood branch as the rail. The black offsets the redwood nicely.

These anchors are nice looking until the finish chips off. It took a long time to install and I had to use different nuts that fit better than the ones provided. They looked great for 1-2 years but then the poor quality aluminum started to spall beneath the paint. The paint just flaked off and now they look terrible. This is the second time in 5-6 years that I replaced them due to the awful looking finish. They do however still feel very sturdy. I am going to try to repaint them in place. We'll see how that goes.

The product is solid and has a great look.
Even thought they look good and have a nice finish the holes for mounting to the deck are too close to the base using a screw head in place of the six sided bolts makes the job look just as good and still keeps it secure.

I had replaced the old style iron brackets several times. They would rust and break after a few years. I look forward to not replacing these aluminum ones.
