Product Overview

Remember when you brought those old jagged boards back to life. The WEN 13 in. 3-Blade Benchtop Thickness Planer repurposes rough and worn wood to give it an exceptionally smooth finish. The powerful 15 Amp motor provides over 25,500 cuts per minute at a 26 ft. per minute feed rate. Plane boards up to 13 in. W and 6 in. T with ease. The onboard planning gage helps inform users about the amount of material being removed during each pass. Combine that with the heavy-duty cast iron base for a sturdy planer that does not walk or wobble during operation. The handy depth adjustment knob varies each pass to take off anywhere from 0 in. to 3/32 in. of an inch. The fan-assisted dust port removes chips and sawdust from the workpiece and blasts them out of the way. This package also includes height-adjustable infeed and outfeed tables to limit snipe while providing extra support to your workpiece during planning. Easily mount the planer to a work surface or stand using the predrilled base holes. Repurpose old wood or make a set of boards flush with the WEN 13 in. 3-Blade Benchtop Thickness Planer. And because its a WEN product, this planer comes backed by a nationwide network of skilled service technicians, a helpful customer support line and a two-year warranty. Remember when your planer could handle even the hardest of woods. Remember WEN.

I've only had occasion to use my new planer a few times thus far, but I must admit that each time it has been clean and true! The reviews were favorable before my purchase, and that is why I bought the WEN instead of the more expensive brand. No regrets! Cuts were clean and smooth, and it wasn't as loud as I expected. Huge thumbs up! I built a cabinet for it, too.

Planer came out of it's box ready to work. And, after having only used it for a few jobs so far, can report out my 5-star rating with no fear of future regret. After practice runs on a few clean and smooth lengths of pine, to observe reaction to a range of cut settings, with planer response as expected, next was a real tough task: cleaning up some salvaged solid black walnut, whose prior history were as two large Danish Modern cabinets. Recovered slabs were 12" wide and a bit over 3/4' thick, that had a heavy coating of dry and damaged oil & wax finish. Cleaned all slabs up with minimum effort and got walnut back to clean & flat 3/4" stock, ready to become new MBR drawer and door fronts. "Happy" is too weak a word, given how this new tool has performed so far. Btw, my shop-vac sucked up 99% of all planer chips with no clogging, which differs from other users postings.

For the money this is one excellent surface planer. I was concerned about the quality for under $300 planer but this planer cuts my boards with no rip outs or sniping. Well worth the money for what I paid.

She’s loud but does a great job! I don’t think you can beat this for the price. I hooked my RIGID shop vac up to it and the mess is minimal. I haven’t come across any issues and I have put quite a bit of lumber through it! Snipe is easy to avoid in my opinion.

Works great. Have used for pine, fir, oak and walnut. Occasionally it can get a little bogged down with oak or walnut, but if you just adjust the depth of the cut to be a bit less that usually takes care of the problem. I have found that connecting a shop vac to the dust port actually causes it to get more clogged up because my shop vac sucks less volume than the planner is putting out... guess its time to get some proper dust collection.

Good entry level planer I would say. So far only some construction grade pine; 2x10 and 4x4s. The 4x4s seemed to be slipping under the rollers, needed light forward pressure to keep it moving steady. Surprisingly smooth new surface. 1/4 turn of the knob is the right amount of adjustment. The debris port gets clogged frequently unless a shop vac is attached, which is recommended by manufacturer. Added a 4" dryer vent to direct the chips into a bin and worked alright. I temporarily attached it to my collapsible miter saw stand until I build a station for it. Should you do this, don't collapse the stand with it mounted as I feel it's too heavy to be supported vertically and not slip or cause damage to the rails its attached to. I'm happy with it so far, if my hobby continues to anything more than just that, I'll likely be upgrading for more efficient machine in regard to chip evacuation. But for the price, this is the sacrifice I make and I recommend it based on my experiences so far.

Product was well packed and all parts (not many loose ones, thank you) easily identified with directions for everything. It appears to be well built and solid and you should probably have someone help lifting it out of the box, because it's got some heft to it. The dust collector chute with fan moves the debris quite well through attached PVC plumbing. Although it's a "bench top" machine, I mounted it to a sturdy cart for mobility, started it and ran several pieces of lumber through it. It ran smoothly and did a very good job of shaving various thicknesses without much drag on the motor. I only gave it 4 stars at this time because I haven't used it extensively yet.

Overall this is a great product for the price, I was looking for the most affordable and was somewhat worried about that decision until two weeks later the planer is still running like new. My only critism is that the dust extractor was missing a screw, so I had to rig it to stay flush with the exit port. Also unlike the joint planer the thickness did not come with the dust bag which was helpful. Although on the thickness planer the dust exit is in a much better location. Now I am using this to quickly cut down some woods for furniture, I've put maple, walnut, pine, poplar, and maghony through it no issue and got want I needed to turn rest by hand. If you are looking for this planer to get in within 64th of an inch easily don't count of it, I would have to say about an 8th is the best you'll do. None the less I can't complain and am happy with what I paid for.

I've only had the planer about 2 1/2 weeks and when it was working it planed the boards just fine, but in that time I've had the gear box that drives the feed rollers go out. Wen sent me a replacment, put that in. Then the drive chains became loose and almost coming off track. Called wen and the tech said that one of my roller bearing had went out. I've only had maybe a max of about 25-30 hrs on the planer. I dont know if I just got a lemon or what, but wen is sending me a replacment planer. We'll see how the next one does. One thing to note is they don't seem to use lock rite on their screws. That how the gear box went out, a couple screws loosened and tore up the bearing in the box.

I am sorry this will not be an in depth review where I will give you all of the technical and specifications. Let me just tell you what I needed and what it did. There are plenty of good Youtube videos on this exact planer BTW. When I went looking for a planer I needed it to be able to do a removal of a 16th of an on inch. I needed the three blade as I wanted the smoothest finish possible. I wanted the polished table as I didn't want the product that I was putting through it to be scratched. I cannot dislike anything about this product. I have had this product now for about 3 weeks. It has fully met my expectations and here is why. I bought a used house. The house had water damage done to a small section of the floor and a company had come in and ripped it out. The floor was done with 3 inch wide by 5/16 deep Gunstock Oak planks, glued to a concrete slab. Unfortunately you cannot get this kind of flooring any longer. I found a 98% match someplace and it was 3 inch by 3/8. This was the closest that I would ever get and I was shy of a 16th. I needed to either get a 16th removed or I needed to rip the whole floor up and start all over. After much research and doing the math I went on the search for a tool that would allow me to use the new flooring. i bought this tool. After a fairly quick setup and run through of the instructions, within 30 minutes (I was being very careful) I had enough boards to make the repair and in the end not have to rip up 1500 square feet of flooring all for 40 square feet of damage. This was my solution and I am sure that there are a hundred more but now I have another tool in my shop that if I ever have need then there it is. I am by no mean made out of money and this wasn't cheap by it was well within my budget and it fit my needs very well. I would highly recommend this planer. It just worked liked it was supposed to. Oh and speaking to the snipe that I read about in other reviews... That was almost null for what I was doing.

I did my homework before purchasing this planer, yes the DeWalt was rated best overall. In the category "Best Bang for the Buck" this Wen was rated best of 3 others and did not disappoint. The adjustment knob was the only part not fully assembled. I did have pedestal table feet, made of 3-2X4s thick, that were ready for test cutting and I was downright giddy watching them go through this machine. In the interest of full disclosure, I do currently work at The Home Depot, but I spent 21 years at the competition; do your own homework, I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase. In the photo, my first attempt at dust collection was a bust, my fault, not the shaper.

I've used other planers before and owned an old blue Ryobi planer, and compared to the WEN, the Ryobi felt like a professional grade tool. 1. The circuit breaker button on the front tripped 8 times (no load) during the first hour of use. It usually tripped while lowering the crank and never while running a board. I use a dedicated 20 amp circuit with 12 ga. wire. My killawatt says the planer never consumed more than 8.5 amps under load. 2. Gear crank is sloppy and hard to turn once you get it going. If you look under the base, the gears are exposed plastic and make me doubt they would last long. Sometimes I will watch the gear handle move back/forth 1/4 turn while planing. 3. Factory assembly quality: The height gauge marker on the right is very crooked. The cut depth gauge marker looks like it was painted on with a Q tip. Multiple tool marks. Grease everywhere. Paint flaking off cast iron parts. Metal Shavings on tool when unpacking it. 4. Outfeed snipe seems to be common, but this is true with most planers under $500. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with this tool after purchasing based on the Amazon reviews (4.4 stars/167 reviews). Unfortunately the reviews do not distinguish between the 6550 & 6552 models. Maybe the 6550 is an excellent tool made in a different factory, but the 6552 is H A R B O R - F R E I G H T quality AT BEST!!! UPDATE: I returned the WEN 6552 and bought a Dewalt DW734 and could not be happier!!! The Dewalt is everything that a planer in this price range should be and then some. The carriage head lock of the Dewalt really makes a world of difference in the amount of snipe. Additionally, both the WEN and Dewalt have 3 blade cutter heads, but the Dewalt produces a perfectly smooth finish while the WEN left dozens of shiny scoop marks along the entire board (see pics).

Packaging: The turnaround from ordering the planer to it arriving to my local Home Depot was reasonably fast, especially since I was ordering it just before Christmas. The planer was packaged well: secured inside Styrofoam molding and contained inside a thick corrugated paper box reinforced by plastic banding. I opted to have it delivered to my local store (even though the shipping weight was nearly 80 lbs) to ensure that I would receive my planer and receive it undamaged. Setup/Assembly: My planer was nearly usable immediately of the box. The assembly required consisted of attaching the crank handle and dust chute, and removing the protective plastic film from the feed table. I didn't even need to adjust/square up the tables. My Planing Preparation: Since I am using pallet wood, reclaimed boards, and Craigslist find lumber, I have to especially make sure that any dirt or metal have been removed from the wood prior to planing. This preparation includes sanding away any dirt and splinters, and removing whatever nails, screws, or staples that may be in the wood. I also use a joiner to flatten one side (and to square one edge to the flattened surface) before using the thickness planer so that my two flat sides would be parallel and even thickness across the whole board. Operating the Thickness Planer: The manual says that it can cut up to 3/32" each pass on a 6-12" "hard, softwood", but I have only been making multiple light passes--maybe about 1/32" at most. I tend to crank at quarter turns each pass to take very light shavings. Thus far I have only been planing my wood to be flat, squared, and same height as other wood as needed. I haven't yet had a need to plane the wood to be exactly 1/2", 3/4", etc. thick though at a casual glance the gauges seem to be accurate enough. I haven't noticed any significant snipe on two foot long boards; no snipe that had to be chopped or sanded. The only real downside I've encountered so far is that despite having a dust chute attached to a dust separator/wet-dry vac that catches most of the wood chips, I still have to pause to clean chips that shoot out from the infeed after a few feeds. This is more of a minor nuisance than a problem, and certainly in itself not a dealbreaker given the purchase price. This downside was the only thing that kept me from giving this planer a full five stars. Overall Assessment: A decent entry level thickness planer that seems to be worth its budget price.

Definitely lives up to its reviews. This is my first encounter with a planer, and I am very happy with my purchase. The planer is easy to operate without much of a learning curve. It has worked very well on mostly 2x4 pine in making cornhole board frames. It leaves a very smooth finish which has almost eliminated the need for sanding. It is pretty hefty weight wise so a dedicated work station is a plus.

I was very excited about this after reading the reviews. However, after running a few boards through I noticed there are black lines horizontally across every board in multiple places. This is from what I am guessing are the rollers. This is brand new and within 10 minutes it isn't working properly.

            Decent Planer
This planer was easy to set up right out of the box. Adjustments are very easy. This planer left black marks all over the wood I was sending through it. A quick cleaning of the infeed and out feed tables and a good coat of paste wax fixed that issue. The planer does produce some snipe, which is to be expected out of a budget planer. Unit is not overly loud and works good for the money. Next planer purchase will be a higher end model. However, this is a good entry level unit. Fast shipping to the store, smooth transaction.

The planer came in a timely manner but the table took an extra week to get here. Shipped from California to Kentucky. Everything arrived in good shape. The table had to be assembled but that was fairly straight forward. It was a couple of weeks before I used the planer. I dressed up some ruff cut boards for my son. The planer worked very well and was easy to use. The three blade system seemed to give it more cutting power. I am very pleased with my purchase and only time will tell if it stays that way. I would recommend this product.
