Product Overview

Remember when you brought those old jagged boards back to life. The WEN 12.5 in. Benchtop Thickness Planer with Granite Table repurposes rough and worn wood to give it an exceptionally smooth finish. The powerful 15 Amp motor combined with our 2-blade cutting system provides over 17,000 cuts per minute at a 26 ft. per minute feed rate. Plane boards up to 12.5 in. W and 6 in. thick with ease. The smooth granite table never warps and provides precise support to wood passing through the machine. Combine that with the heavy-duty base for a sturdy planer that does not walk or wobble during operation. The handy depth adjustment knob varies each pass to take off anywhere from 0 in. to 3/32 in. The fan-assisted dust port removes chips and sawdust from the workpiece and blasts them out of the way. This package also includes 2 high carbon steel double-edged blades (SK5) along with height-adjustable infeed and outfeed tables that limit snipe while providing extra support to your workpiece during planning. Easily mount the planer to a work surface or stand using the predrilled base holes. Repurpose old wood or make a set of boards flush with the WEN 12.5 in. Benchtop Thickness Planer. And because its a WEN product, the WEN Thickness Planer comes backed by a nationwide network of skilled service technicians, a helpful customer support line and a 2-year warranty. Poor customer service
Bought the Wen thickness planer based on some pretty good reviews. Well I have had it for a few months, only used it a handful of times. Bam! A bunch of teeth break off one of the sprockets. Ok, ,I get it things can break. I contacted WEN with pictures, the series number, the online order info from home depot. I have not heard anything back from them, nothing except a auto response email. Save your money. Last tool I ever buy from WEN. As a matter of fact I just had ordered a bench sander from WEN. It just arrived, guess what's going right back.

Holes do not line up at all.
Very first step after opening the box is putting on the legs. The holes do not even get close to lining up. The size of the holes compared to the size of the screws means they need to line up perfectly but even after trying to force them to line it up still wont work. Maybe I was unlucky and got a defective one, but several reviews here seem to have the same issues that I do. I will be returning it and trying to order another one to see if I can get one that fits.

Perfect for home projects. I used this on a TON of pallets already and the result is beautiful. Easy to use and the vacuum setup does a great job - almost all the chips are contained in there. It was able to hook up to the shop vac that I already have. It's also easy to move around with built in handles. I can do it myself but it's much easier with 2 people. The only downside I've seen is sometimes i get very thin lines in the middle of my boards that don't get planed. It almost looks like there's a tiny chip in the blade.

I've used it for about a week and already I'm very happy I chose this this planer. I make very light passes through it and it gives a very smooth finish. Had a problem with snipe at first. I rigged up an infeed and outfeed table that holds the work piece up on the ends so it doesn't drop down any and now snipe is almost non exsistent. I adjust the depth of cut less than a quarter turn each time. Light cuts are the key to less snipe and a good finish. I plan to make a better infeed/outfeed setup now that I know what is needed. Holding the work piece up on the ends.

Just got this and ran about 10 boards through. I had some ceder that I pulled off the house and wanted to re-use it as window framing instead of buying casing for a rustic look. This did the trick. It probably saved half it's cost on this one project. It ran well right out of the box, with no adjustment other than depth necessary. I was able to minimize the snipe by lifting up slightly on the board on the entry and exit (when it's only in contact with one roller). Nice and heavy, so it's not unsteady, but light enough to transport without throwing our your back. Dust collection seemed to work well. I think the trick with this planer is to not get in too big of a hurry, and only do a little each pass. I like the roller on the top. I like the granite table. This is not a cabinet shop tool, but for the home shop it works well, and is very cost effective.

Planer does good on most of the hard woods I’ve ran through it with minimal snipe. You have to make sure and not try to take off too much at one time and product works great. I’ve used it to plane teak, cherry, pecan, white and red oak, and maple for cutting boards. Also used for pallet boards for projects, pine, oak, cedar and teak pallets. So far very pleased with this planer.

So far the planer has done great. No problems using it, and it makes a nice smooth surface, saving me a lot of time in sanding. It also will allow me to use all kinds of scrap wood that I have. I just hope it last a good long time, which I won't know for several years. We'll see. But in the mean time, it allows me to cut scrap pieces with my table saw and then plane them down to the exact thicknesses that I need, saving me all sorts of trouble.

I have a wood shop where we work with natural hard woods. We use a variety of hard woods from Maple, Oak to Black Walnut. With it all being natural there aren't any square straight lines to start out typically, but this WEN thickness planer cut down everything I put through it no problem restoring the woods natural beauty. We have other WEN products in the shop and they're definitely the best value brand we've found and no problems to date. The outtake did clog up a bit, however when taking shorter passes I had no problem, also if you have a vacuum set up that should solve that. Thumbs up!

I purchased the Wen planer specifically for an exotic purple heart kitchen island that I built to impress some out of town guests. The machine held it's own against the wood. It motor did struggle a bit, but remember, purple heart is a very dense and very heavy wood. Following that project, I ran some oak, pine, cedar and poplar through it for a bench I built. The planer tore through that wood like it was butter. I would definitely recommend this product to any amateur wood worker wanting to use this on their hobby. I am happy with my purchase.

Great once unit if you can get a good one
Ordered this online and shipped to my house. The bottom housing was badly damaged from shipping. Great customer service to get a new one sent to me quickly. The new one had some scratches and dings as well but look cosmetic only. I would recommend shipping it to the store and then picking it up from there. Needs some tweaking to get is setup but ran a few boards through and WOW! cleaned them right up. Wax the infeed/outfeed tray as well as the granite for smoother planing.

                Plain easy to use
I'm very pleased with this planer thus far. It's my first and in my opinion a great entry level unit for someone just getting into woodworking or on a budget. Hooks up easy to the shop vac or dust collection. I would recommend a cyclone type chip collector if you can swing it. I used it remotely with my shop vac alone and it just clogged up the filter after a single project. Power is adequate but with really hard woods you'll need to take very light passes if you're going a full board width. If I could make two improvements I would make it so you can fold the outfeed table up without having to raise the cutting head. I also wish the top was flat. It would be convenient to lay the stock on the top of the unit as you went back and forth between infeed and outfeed. I've gone through several projects now with no issues and minimal snipe. Great addition to the shop.

Good looking, works after several adjustments
Strong Suction, Powerful, Easy to Use, Sturdy, Good Size & Weight. First project removing veneer from buffet base and putting on new. Cleaned up well. Needed a lot of tweaking to start using. Extension tables were higher than granite table, cutting was deeper on right than on left. Book instructions were no good for adjusting gears. Built a rolling table with drop leaves, next project involves long material.

                Awesome value
I’m very impressed with this planer. For the inexpensive price tag, this thing is very solidly built, and performs like a charm. I definitely don't see a need to spend more money on another planer, unless you need something larger. PROS: -Well Made: The first thing I noticed was the weight – it is heavy. They definitely didn’t cheap out on materials, which I confirmed upon closer examination. It is made from cast iron, and the granite table is very sturdy. -Granite Table: As mentioned above, it is very sturdy and provides a nice smooth surface for the wood to slide without scratching. It is level, and short of knocking the planer off the workbench, I can’t imagine it will ever bend or warp. -Power: I put a wide board through the planer, and took off a good amount of wood. The planer powered right through it without a hiccup. (You can see this in my video). -Adjustments: Each full rotation of the handle only adjusts the cutting thickness by only 3/32 of an inch, convenient for making small adjustments. Unfortunately that means it takes many rotations to adjust the height when moving from one board to another (for example adjusting the height from 5 to 2 inches. Of course nothing can be done about that, and it’s only a minor inconvenience. Small adjustments to the cutting thickness is more important. -Measurement: It is easy and clear to see the thickness at which the planer is set by the guide on the planer. The red line is clearly visible against the black background. -Carry Handle: I’m not sure if the bar across the top of the planer is designed for ease of carrying the planer, but that’s how I use it and it’s very convenient. CONS: -Dust port: I have two different little complaints about the dust port. First, I was surprised it didn’t come with a bag to catch the dust/chips. It sprays the wood chips about 8 feet away. It’s an inconvenience to clean that up, especially if used indoors. Second, the dust port clogged when I put the aforementioned wide board through the planer. I think it was due to the design of the hole being right next to a flat surface that runs perpendicular to it. The chips built up on that flat surface and eventually blocked the hole. You can see this in the video as well - about halfway through the board the wood chips stopped exiting the port and started coming out the front of the planer. In summary, I love this tool. I really can't figure out why it is so inexpensive compared to the competition. It is very well made and I'm sure would perform comparably to the more expensive options. My complaints are minor - I can get my own dust bag, and unclogging the dust port is quick and easy. It's not enough to warrant spending hundreds more for another planer.

Overall seems like a good planer, needed tweaking
Overall it seems like a decent planer. I have never used one so I don't really have anything to compare it against. Out of the box all you have to do is attach the dust shroud if you want and attach the handle that adjusts planing thickness. There is mention in the manual for adjusting the inlet and outlet tables to reduce or eliminate snipe. Out of the box mine only had snipe on the outlet side, So i adjusted the outfeed table and got the snipe to go away. That is when I noticed that one that I could not feed a board down the middle and plane it. It would feed through but not plane it or barely plane it. So I adjusted infeed side of the planer (see image of infeed side). I checked the blades and one was not seated properly so I took it out and then reinstalled it properly. After that I then noticed that the planer did not plane evenly, one side was .040 more than the other. So then I scratched my head and started poking around and figured out that the granite table was not parallel to the blades. It's not difficult to adjust it's just tedious and is almost a trial and error. As you begin to tighten the fasteners holding down the granite base the adjustment get messed up so you need to go back and readjust and try to compensate for how much the granite will move then tightening the fasteners. After all the tweaking I finally got to plane close to evenly (less then .005 inches difference between each side of and 8 inch wide board). For wood working I call that close enough. I have heard that these type of planers are really loud, but I didn't think it was that loud. I do wear hearing protection while using it. But the noise it make is on par with the shop vac that I use to collect the planing chips. Also the dust and chip collection with a shop vac is very good. After planing a bunch of boards I only had small handful of chips not make it into the shop vac. The shop vac hose does not fit the port on the dust shroud, I used a no-hub plumbing connection to join the two.

Really nice 2 blade planer for price
OVERALL: Cuts clean for a 2 blade. Motor has good pull, but can be overwhelmed if you try to plane too much at once. Easy to adjust to fairly precise measurements with handle and ruler readout. CUT: I did have some snipe with the out of box settings on 8" boards. If doing more precise work, I'd put together (or buy) a rolling outfeed rolling table. Overall pretty even cut otherwise. TABLES: The granite table is a very useful touch. In and out feeds were scraped up instantly, but the granite under table was good as new. Does make unit a fair amount heavier of course. Worth it. KNIVES: 2 bladed rotor, which is sufficient for most jobs. Knives held up well over six 8" 2x10 pine boards with sever warping. Some nicks, not bad. Comes with Allen wrench and magnets for changing. CLEANUP: Comes with a good dust shoot. Attach to standard shop vac, and most dust gets sucked up. Some mild cleanup on ground after my 6 boards, nothing major.

                Perfect at-home planer
If you are planning doing a lot of custom woodwork such as moldings, soffits, and trim, I highly recommend this planer. My home has custom toekicks, baseboard moldings, and door trim throughout. I wish I had this vertical planer years ago when I began remodeling; it would have saved me a lot of time selecting boards at the store and then sanding them smooth. For those who don't know, a planer is useful for distressed wood with dents, stains, etc. and also if the wood is cupped. The attached photo is a before and after picture of a standard 2x6, which was cupped, with the result being good enough to construct from it a custom toekick for the top of the stairs--yes, I took a piece of scrap wood and made it beautiful using this planer! This planer is very practical for the DIY-er. I don't have a shop, but I have a garage with a few small power tools including a table saw. It is small enough to be a practical addition to an at-home shop, yet large enough to pass most standard widths of lumber which can be purchased at Home Depot. This planer is light enough to move around in and out of storage, and I actually mount it over my table saw when in use. Things you will need: A shop vac, which is a handy tool on its own, attaches to the machine and sucks out all the sawdust, keeping the workspace clean and safe (see video). Another thing you will need is a surface on which to mount the planer. I recommend a standard work table, nothing fancy needed, just something to secure the machine onto--no box table required as the vacuum hooks directly to it! The granite slab is incredibly smooth and representative of the machine's quality: the table is a solid slab of granite, which in comparison to other tables such as steel or ceramic-coated, is very durable. I am looking forward to many years of use out of this planer. I am a proud owner!

Works great. Putting Purple Heart through it and it cleanly planes it down. Well worth the low cost. Small amount of snipe but easily fixed by lifting the wood a bit.
