Excellent value
Very happy so far with this Wen 4212 drill press and glad I went for the automatic variable speed. Easy to setup and use. “Run out”, i.e., straightness of bit in chuck was much better than I expected. I just finished using it to do my first aluminum bar drilling project with great quick results with 26 holes. I didn’t use the laser but it seems pretty accurate out of the box. No need for a built in light source since it’s easier and more flexible to use a clip/clamp light when & where needed. The way the unit is shipped and packaged made me think it had already been opened and setup & returned. I took it back and got another one and the new unit was packaged exactly the same way. The electric cord is haphazardly tied, part of the press breaks through the top layer of styrofoam and the manual plastic bag is already open and irregularly cut open along top of bag. Since two different units were packaged almost identically, it’s obviously the way Wen does it. Regardless, a terrific value and wish i’d gotten it long ago. Most of my projects will involve aluminum and glass holes. The aluminum will be mostly for precisely located holes that will then be tap threaded ranging from 6-32 to 5/24.

Assembly was quick and easy. I am really impressed with the weight of the stand and the seeming quality of the table and base. The variable speed lever is fairly smooth and appropriately stiff to maintain the RPM the machine is set to. Speaking of the RPM that the machine is set to, the digital RPM readout is awesome!
Now for the bad and what caused this drill press to only get 2 stars. The run out on the chuck is abysmal. I cleaned the arbor and chuck, pressed it on, and immediately noticed it wasn't true. I have tried reseating the chuck several times now but the runout has not improved. I don't have a dial indicator to measure the exact travel, but it is visible to the naked eye using a 1/8" bit, and is violently noticeable when using a spade bit.

The drill press is easy to assemble. After I asseble them and run first time, there is loud noise...
The drill press is easy to assemble. After I asseble them and run first time, there is loud noise coming from belt box. I tight the screws on the belt box. The drill press works well. The chuck size (1-13mm) is perfect for me. I often use it to drill hole to tap for 2-56 screws. I have to say this is a fantastic purchase. I am very happy with it.

This is an amazing value and a great tool. Over the past few weeks of nearly daily use in my home wood shop, I've been particularly impressed with the ease of changing the speed to accommodate different woods and a wide range of different types of drills from small twist drills to 3-inch hole saws. No belts, no pulleys, no struggle and the digital readout is quite helpful. Great to know you are using the optimum speed for any operation. Laser guides are very handy and easy to a adjust for pretty good accuracy (not quite perfect, but this is a home wood shop, not a laboratory). The unit is quite stable -- I bolted it to the bench== and thus able to give accurate, repeatable holes. I've added a home made table and fence and I've been able to drill with an accuracy and repeatability and ease that I have never had before. The photo shows the precise drilling out of the Bakelite base of an antique radio tube...something I would never have attempted without the stability and accuracy of this tool. I love this drill press and only wish I had gotten it earlier.

I purchased this about a month ago. I couldn’t afford to spend a lot on a drill press. I read enough reviews and really heard no real negatives to speak of. I always take them for what they’re worth. This was $163.00. Very solid drill press. I’ve used this for about a total of three hours. The variable speed control with the LED readout is great! Lesser drill presses had it where you would have to open the top, loosen the motor, change the belt position on the pulleys, tight the motor and screw the lid shut. A lot of effort just to change to a different speed. And you would be stuck with only the specific 5 or 7 speeds.
(Thought I seen one with 12 speeds) WHEN I first turned it on the lid vibrated real bad. Not a big deal. I cut two small pieces of foam and tightened the lid down on them. The other thing I noticed was that when I turned the drill press off the motor made a type of scraping sound. Only lasts a second or so. I called WEN and they said that 2 years ago they changed this drill press over to a stronger motor and this one has a Centrifugal Clutch. That is what the sound is coming from the motor. An adjustable light would have been nice but the adjustable speed control with readout far out weighs a light. Great product WEN!
