Pretty Clever Marketing
The heat gun works great - 12 heat settings are more than enough for the average home DIYer. I only give it 4 stars due to the rather clever marketing. The power cord ships loose in the box and is permanently attached to the heat gun after initially attaching it to the gun. Unfortunately the gun doesn't fit back in the box with the cord attached. So they force you to purchase...wait for it... the OPTIONAL hard case!! Very clever. Or you can alter the original box like I did. See attached pic.

Goodbye gold vinyl handrail, hello black
I used the heat tool to remove the old gold vinyl handrail from my 1970 staircase. It was light enough to hold in one hand, heat the vinyl and remove it. It was also the perfect tool to heat the new black vinyl to soften and install.

it works just as expected, which is refreshing these days. Easy to control multiple heat levels allowed me to soften Plexiglas and use a wood form for shape without burning the wood. The stand-up position is nice and stable. Definitively a good purchase for me.

Useful tool; overly complicated controls
Heat guns for removing old paint have to be one of the best inventions ever! Today was the first time I've used one (the Wagner Furno 500) and it has already saved me days of nasty labor scraping and sanding off many layers of paint. My first project was refurbishing and repainting an old, outdoor waterheater closet on a historic cottage, which required removing many thick layers of paint. That being said, new users may be baffled or confused by the Wagner 500 controls. They seem to be overly complicated, though professionals may find the many settings useful and be able to figure them out more quickly. At times I had trouble turning it on and off and was on the verge of returning it, thinking it was defective. I had to consult the manual several times before starting to get the hang of it. I think too many engineers were involved in designing this, with not enough user feedback. Also, I didn't care for the configuration of the plug that goes into the wall outlet, and the settings screen is impossible to read in bright daylight. I had to go into the shade to make adjustments. Other than that, I don't know how I lived without one before now.

For your typical DIY'er the Furno 500 is very nice heat gun and all they will ever need. Some complain about not having a trigger to power it on and off. For 99% of people this is a non issue. Controls work great. The many variable heat settings are fantastic. Some have complained that once connecting the power cord it cannot be disconnected and it will not fit in back in the box for storage. Well, ya just have to be a little smarter than the cardboard box. With a little modification you can overcome the box. LOL Although it's not a perfect solution it works for me as I can now store the gun, tips and manual all in the box. See attached photo.
