Q:Will this rust?
by|Oct 7, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, all blue steel taping knives will rust. The blades have a protective coating on them when purchased. As they are used the coating is worn away exposing the blue steel. Blue steel is used because it is more flexible than stainless steel giving a better finish result. After using the taping knife simply wash the knife with water to remove drywall mud. Thoroughly dry the blade to prevent formation of rust. If available give the blade a spray of WD-40 to prevent rust until the next use. As a side note; if the blade does rust it does not harm the wall surface or negatively impact the wall.

    RUSTED while using
Was using it for just a day for joint compound and noticed that there were little orange colors seeping through z Washed it and realized that after only one day use this started to rusting. I have the larger stainless steel version and do not have any issue with it. Very disappointed

        Product labeling ruins the blade
To this day, I do not understand why manufacturers put product labels on the blade that leave glue residue when you pull them off. The whole idea of a drywall knife is that it’s smooth. I tried removing the glue with warm water and it wouldn’t come off so I use the bit of soap and whatever the blue coating is on there super special blue steel comes right off the blade, leaving it unprotected and ready to rust. I used it once and threw it in the garbage where it belongs.

              Rusty after one day
Used one day, cleaned with water, shook dry and left sitting inside a temperature controlled room. Next day I didn’t notice..,the blade was so rusty it left red streaks in the first pull I made. Plastic would have been more useful. WASTE OF MONEY!

If you don't dry immediately, the bottom edge shows signs of rust. I would think whatever is on sides would also be on bottom edge to protect against rust.
