Questions & Answers

Is this product good to use on an exterior wooden door and can it withstand intense sun without peeling
ByOct 6, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up, Robin! Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is suitable for interior surfaces only and will withstand exposure to the elements. For exterior surfaces, we recommend Rust-Oleum Watco Teak Oil instead. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-Quart-Teak-Oil-in-Clear-A67141/100154957 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Is it vapor permeable? Will wood finished with this be able to dry if it absorbs water?
    ByMar 29, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Happy to help, Edward! Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is not a waterproofing finish and water and vapor will still be able to pass through the coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can I apply a wax finish like Osmo top oil on top of this stain, after 72 hours from the last coat?
      ByDec 18, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Great question! Yes, you can apply a wax over Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil once it has fully dried. Please keep in mind, you will need to remove the wax if you choose to apply a polyurethane over the surface at a later time or need to reapply the Danish oil. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can tung oil be applied over Watco Danish Oil?
        BySep 8, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up, Robert. Since Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is a penetrating product, it can prevent other penetrating oils from properly penetrating. If using another brand of tung oil, a test application would be needed. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

We're happy to help, Izzy. Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil will fully cure 3 days after applying. Please note that, factors like low temperatures or not removing the excess oil will hinder the oil from properly curing. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Is watco danish oil food safe for a countertop
            ByMar 28, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Suem, happy to clarify! While Watco Danish Oil provides a durable protective finish, it is not considered food safe. You may consider Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain instead, as this is food safe and can be applied to a bare interior countertop. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-Pint-Butcher-Block-Oil-in-Carbon-Gray-4-Pack-370150/316454425

I’ve sanded down an oak table to make into a coffee table. Was thinking of using just stain until I saw this product. Question… would I have to put a poly spray on top after it dries or is it matte and perfect on its own?
              ByOct 24, 2024
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Happy to help, Kathy! Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil will have a low sheen hand rubbed finish. If left as is, maintenance coats would be needed to repair surface scratches and to remove minor stains. Otherwise, a polyurethane can be applied over it in the finish of your choice once the danish oil has been allowed to dry for at least 72 hours. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

I have the dark walnut oil. Can I add stain to it to make it darker, and if so, which type would mix in the best?

                Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out. We do not recommend adding any additional colorant or stain to our Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil as this will alter the formulation of the oil and can hinder the performance and penetration. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

                  Horrible cap.
Cannot get cap off. Poor design. Not designed for normal hands. Need can/cap to be designed for women’s hands.

The oil was easy to use and the look of the board turned out nice.

Easy to use. I wiped it on with a rag. Dried overnight. Nice tone to my pine butcher block bench top.

This review is from 1 Pint Danish Oil in Natural
Used on my 17 new solid pine wood bifold closet doors. It works as expected. My wife likes the one coat result. One gallon left unopened and untouched, but Home Depot could not accept to return it. Too bad.

Great finish. I have butcher block counter tops cut for my home office. I wanted to finish it in something that kept close to the natural look of it. I was initially going to use butcher block oil, but it leaves a satin/semi gloss finish (which is good for food prep surfaces). In my case, I wanted the finish to be matte, which is why I chose the danish oil. I’m very happy with the results. Application was fool proof, and it kept the natural beauty of the wood character.

                    Easy application
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The oil was easy to apply, and it soaked into the wood nicely, providing a nice-looking finish. Natural shade has was a good match. Has noticeable smell. Not food grade.

                      So many uses!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is by far the best natural oil for raw wood products. I’ve used it on side tables and drawers, I have a set of outdoor teak chairs I can’t wait to use this stuff on! A little goes a long way, leaving no oily residue. It really does soak into the wood, leaving the surface area protected and natural looking. As always, read manufacturer’s instructions fully before using this product. This really is something everyone needs on hand. Great for cabinets or wood countertops, even wood grain doors, floors or windows. This stuff is beautiful!

Adds a touch of warmth, perfect for DIY projects!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] LOVE this stain! The color I used was “Natural” and it was a beautiful natural wood color with just a touch of warmth. I did one coat on a towel rack I DIY’ed, the second photo shows one coat dried next to a clean unstained wood piece. The odor was not very strong but I’d still recommend using it outside or in a very well ventilated area.

                          Disappointed
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was really disappointed that it was labeled as food grade, but it cannot be used on cutting boards. It was why I chose the product. I did test it out on a piece of wood and it made the wood look fine. It’s a little smelly.

                            Perfect
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Absolutely perfect! I wanted the natural look but still wanted to protect the wood and bring out the richness in each piece. This oil was it! It dried fast and was low odor.
