Q:What do you put over this to make it shine ? I got the ebony color

Answer This Question

A:  We appreciate your interest, Brandi! At this time, we do not offer a gloss finish that can be used over the Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain. Since this is a finishing oil, it will prevent a polyurethane from properly adhering. While multiple applications of this product can be applied to help build up to more of a satin finish, we not offer a gloss wood finish oil at this time. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Happy to help, Tony! We do not recommend applying Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain over a wood conditioner or other wood stain, as these products may not be food-grade. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Can a food safe wax be applied over this product? I am looking at using this on a cutting board and after applying a food safe oil, typically a wax is applied over the oiled board.

      Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Dave! If wanting to use a food-safe wax over Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain, we recommend allowing the product to dry for at least 72 hours. Please keep in mind, any wax on the surface must be removed before applying any maintenance coats of the Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Hi, I am installing a new countertop in kitchen. After sanded well, will I need to apply this or any other stain/oil to the bottom of the countertop or can I leave that unfinished and use this product on the top and sides?

          Love this stuff!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Used this after staining a piece of butcher block to use as a countertop in my washroom. It is very simple to use. I ended up applying 2 coats, but should have done 3 just to be on the safe side. However, definitely apply in a well ventilated area where your project can sit while airing out. It took a couple of weeks for the smell to die down.

            Great product!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m really enjoying using this. We usually just use mineral oil on our cutting boards but this product lasts much longer. It’s very easy to apply and covers well. The clean up was easy and most importantly, the finished product looks great. Highly recommend!

                As expected
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This worked as expected for me I have a small IKEA kitchen island/cart that is birch wood and came unfinished. I wanted to stop the top from absorbing stains but still have a food-safe working area. I finished the whole thing using this oil and finish and it looks great. It looks natural and not thick and shiny like a polyurethane. It brought out the natural color of my island and I love the look. I had previously been using butcher block mineral oil on the island but that just wasn’t feasible for the whole piece long term. This looks as if it’s only been oiled but will last long term. It was easy to apply with a cotton cloth, just wipe on. Takes 6 hours to dry before recoating but it was dry to the touch within around 30 or 40 minutes. The odor from the finish is sort of like polyurethane but less strong. I would recommend using this in an open garage or outdoors. however if you have a very small piece that you are finishing like a cheese board, doing it near an open window would be fine. I included pictures to show the difference which is difficult to see in photos except on the bottom section where it really brings out the tone of the wood.

                  Color is NOT dark
I was expecting a dark/darker color given the name and shade- Hazelnut. It basically made the butcher block the shade of wet wood.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experinece. Prior to each use, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Watch Butcher Block Oil is thoroughly stirred. We also recommend stirring often during application. The final color will also be heavily dependent on the condition and type of wood used. Additional coats can be applied to help deepen the color.

                    O M Gosh!
I already did a review and as promised here is my follow up picture. I did 2 applications followed up by a satin clear top out and it is exactly what I hoped for! I did a light sand between coats per the instructions and followed the drying times as well. I am sure it would have gotten a lot darker with more coats but this was the effect I was going to for. Absolutely love it
