Questions & Answers

Purchased a hevea butcher block top. We want a wood tone but not as dark as the image on the can. Is that possible?

Answer This Question

Elaine, great question! A normal dwell time with Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain is 15-20 minutes before wiping the excess off the surface. We can recommend doing a few different test samples on scrape pieces with various dwell times until the desired color is achieved. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

      Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up! Since Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil is a penetrating oil, it must be applied to a bare wood surface. If applied over a finished surface, the oil will remain tacky on the surface and not properly dry. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can I use this product product on butcher block that I will use as a desk. Will the stain in Carbon Gray rub against clothing even after the cure period say after 72 hours.

        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain can be applied to a butcher block surface intended to be used for a desk. Once fully cured, it will not transfer to clothing. It is important to allow at least 72 hours for a full cure before regular use. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Can I use on butcher block counter top
          ByApr 15, 2026
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil is not recommended for use on countertops. This is a maintenance product, and heavily used surfaces, such as countertops, would require more frequent maintenance coats. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

            Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up. While Rust-Oleum Watco Clear Butcher Block Oil and Finish will not alter the color of the wood, it will give it a darker/deeper finish. We recommend applying a small test application to ensure the results are as you desire. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

The instructions indicate that after initially finishing a butcherblock countertop towait 72 hrs before normal use of the counter. However, 9 to 12 months later, when one puts on a maintenance coat, does one have to wait 72 hours?

                  Not bad
Looks pretty good on the butcher block I bought from Home Depot, which was the cheaper butcher block, but made it look nice

"Watco 1 Pint Butcher Block Oil" finished the wood nicely. It protect the wood from water and stain etc. Once you put the oil, the wood become water resistant and prevent any water related damage.

I have experimented with a few different ‘food safe’ finishes. I’m surprised this one is food safe since it contains some distillates but that is their claim. ??‍?? It was easy to wipe on but does require at least 3 coats to have a shiny built up appearance. It mostly dries to the touch in an hour or so….but takes several hours before you can handle your project. The finish does not smell but is very ‘thin’ so it will run on a vertical surface. Finally, it is WAY! expensive. I paid $17+ for 16oz for something that really shouldn’t cost $10.

It's pricey but worth it. We used it for a butcher block island counter and it came out terrific.

                    Durable finish!
This photo is over 1 year of application. I have 3 kids who eat here daily and it always cleans up amazing. We've found water that had been on it accidentally for prolonged periods and no issues or watermarks. Couldn't be happier. Take your time and give it a lot of thin coats one each day for like a week and you'll be glad you did!

                      great product!
Used about half of a one-pint can to apply two coats all around an 8’x25” piece of acacia butcher block - really brought the wood to life - no stain needed! Easy to use, relatively low-odor. Definitely recommend!

                        Worth its weight
Really easy to use. Sanded the old finish off with 240 grit and wiped off residue. Applied with cheap sponge brushes didn’t leave any brush strokes. Sanded with some steel wool for a even finish. Used it on kitchen table, coffee table, kitchen island, and the rest of the counters. Still in the process of replacing the other laminate counters with butcher block. Wife loves that it’s super easy to clean no stains and water beads up. Mineral oil left tomato sauce stains.
