Q:Would I be able to apply an oil based Spar Urethane over this to protect an outdoor deck chair?

A:  Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is intended for use on bare interior wood surfaces only. We do not recommend it over other wood finishes or on exterior wood. We do not recommend it for exterior, even with a spar urethane over it. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

by|Oct 26, 2021

A:  Yes. However, I would wait 8-12 hours.

A:  We can help! Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil works best on bare wood surfaces, as this will allow the product to properly penetrate and dry. Once the Danish Oil has been allowed to dry for at least 72 hours, it can be topcoated with a Rust-Oleum Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane for additional protection. https://www.homedepot.com/s/varathane%2520utimate%2520polyurethane?NCNI-5 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi Mark, we do not recommend applying our Watco Danish Oil Finish to an outdoor wood porch ceiling, as the coating is recommended for indoor use only. Over time, the indirect UV exposure will cause deterioration of the finish. Our Varathane Fast Dry Dark Walnut Wood Stain may be applied to the surface, followed by a couple coats of our Varathane Spar Urethane in either our oil or water-based formula to protect the surface. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Dark-Walnut-Premium-Fast-Dry-Interior-Wood-Stain-266167/203332254 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  You really don't need to finish cedar for outdoor projects...but if you just want to for color, then their shouldn't be any issues.

A:  no. This is not a good product for out door use. I would suggest a timber oil by cabot. It works great on all my cedar outdoors. Reapply it every year with a brush, it will look brand new for many years

A:  Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is not recommended for exterior application. Instead, you may consider Rust-Oleum Watco Exterior Wood Finish. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-gal-Natural-Oil-Wood-Finish-2-Pack-67731/204803632 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4

A:  No. It is for indoor use for furniture to give a natural look to hardwood. It is minimally water resistant but a wet glass can leave a ring unless well waxed. It is easily repaired with fine sanding and more Watco. I have used it for years for a variety of projects: furniture, turned bowls, toys, etc. NOT for outdoor use.

I found the product easy to apply, and the stain dries evenly. I just finished a piece with Watco poly over the stain and I could not be happier with the end product.

If you want an attractive hand rubbed finish that is simple to apply, get a Danish oil. Dark walnut stain adds color. My store never seems to get the natural uncolored oil. But I wanted a darker finish, so this worked. I have used it before and definitely will use it again.

So much easier than staining and sealing. Just rubbed on with a cloth. We added floating shelves in our bathroom update. I love how the color turned out, it's not super dark.

My purpose was to rejuvenate a table showing its' wear from being on a covered porch exposed to some weather. This "oil" did what I wanted it to do...cover the old scratches, weathered wood and help me make it look like new. It did!

The product was perfect for the finish I needed. I refinished a top and two leafs on a 40 year old table. The color needed to match the lower part of the table and couldn't have asked for a more perfect match. The product was easy to use. I applied 3 coats and waited an hour between coats. I highly recommend this product.

Watco is the easiest way to preserve the natural qualities of wood.
I am redoing a 1910 farm house and all the plaster had to go. I have installed 1x6 pine for ceilings and after I cut and fit the boards, I sand and use Watco finish on all sides. When the ceiling goes up it is finished. Very easy and beautiful as well
