Is this oil or water based? I cant find anything on the can to tell me. Iwant to use this over a coat of boiled linseed oil but am afraid of results without knowing if it will be ok. I am working on kitchen trim that is already installed and would freak out if it went bad.

Child Safe Polyurethane

I need a safe coating for children's wooden toys. any suggestions?
Asked by: Merlin
Once it's dry it is safe. Same stuff you use on dining tables and a lot of wooden furniture. But if you're doing wooden toys, look into tung oil, beeswax, shallac, and carnauba wax. Those are all considered "food-safe" and will be better suited for a toy than poly.

Restored a beautiful mid century buffet last week and to finish it off I knew I needed a top coat. Don't always use a wipe on poly but have used Min-wax wipe on in the past. Home Depot no longer carries Min-Wax so I bought this product. What a mistake! Wiped on a thin, first coat as per the container's directions on Sunday, August 11th. Drying time is supposed to be 4 hours. It's August 15th and it's still a sticky mess. Have never seen anything like this before. Don't make this mistake. Sorry I did.

You want to make sure the air temperature is between 60 to 90°F when you use the product. Also, be sure it is stirred well to ensure an even finish. In response to the manufacturer's response (below) -- I most definitely am careful about the air temperature when applying finishes. And stirring too. I've been applying wood stains and finishes to my woodworking projects for decades, I should know that by now :). One thing that may be a factor? Air humidity levels. Perhaps the formula for this product works better when there is less moisture in the air? It was fairly high at the time I applied this finish. That definitely affects dry time, it may affect application of it too?. I could try again when it is lower to see if it works better. (I live in Michigan where the Great Lakes cause all kinds of fun with the weather. :) )

I'm not sure if it was a Home Depot issue, or a Watco issue. I did my research regarding what would be the best finish for a large desk top built from scratch. I was confident in my choice to go with wipe on poly as most of what I've read has said it's basically a fool-proof finish. When I applied the first coat, it was basically like trying to apply a brush on finish with a rag. The product came out of the can much thicker than I expected and was tacky within seconds. After having put all of the time and effort into building, sanding, and staining, to have the project ruined at the finish stage would have been heartbreaking. I think I was able to salvage the desk top. I had to sand as smooth as I could taking care not to remove the stain underneath. However, even now there are uneven spots prom the thick poly. I then diluted this product with mineral spirits and tried again. This time it went on as I had expected it to in the first place. Like I said, not sure if its a Home Depot thing or a Watco thing, but this stuff is not good right out of the can. It may have sat too long or it could have been mixed improperly from the get go. The whole point in buying a wipe on poly is to have something usable right out of the tin. If you're having issues like I had, try diluting with mineral spirits and it should work like the product you thought you bought.

I figured I'd try the WOP since the particular Home Depot I was at no longer carried Minwax product. The consistency of the WATCO is almost that of maple syrup. Way to thick. Seems to be more oily than the Minwax WOP with a longer dry time. I even thinned it a bit and it still isn't satisfactory. I wouldn't recommend this product. I'm a bit upset now that I have to waste more time and return this product and go to the other big box store to purchase Minwax WOP.

Even though I applied it as directed in optimum temperature and humidity conditions the polyurethane did not dry in four hours as stated on the can and was still tacky at 7 hours. The second coat was applied after waiting 24 hours. It didn't self level itself and left marks from applying it with a rag. Again, it didn't dry in 4 hours. Rather that risking a third coat I ended up wet sanding to remove the imperfections and went to another well known Home Depot competitor to buy the Minwax Wipe on Poly. to finish the project with. On a positive note it does produce a very glossy finish but the negatives outweigh the positives.

It appears Home Depot has eliminated all MinWax products in favor of Rust Oleum. Rust Oleum seems to be buying traditional wood finishing companies, i.e. Watco and Varathane. In my opinion these products are inferior to companies concentrating on wood finishing. Mohawk being one of the best but there are several others. Rust Oleum is more of a paint company as the name implies. This product is not the same quality as Minwax in viscosity and application ease.

I have used wipe on poly for years ( I am a professional furniture maker), and have relied on another brand until recently. I thought, because I also use Watco's Danish oil, that their wipe on poly would work as well and complement the Watco Danish oil. My experience is the same as a recent reviewer: the viscosity of this product is far too thick, and in a short time, applying as per the directions, it's as though I am applying thick, sticky syrup. Perhaps I have gotten a bad batch... I will call Watco. Bottom line: I do not find this product easy to wipe on, or easy to use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Super disappointing I don’t have much experience in refinishing furniture, but last year I used a different product which sadly Home Depot no longer carries. I assumed any wipe-on poly would suffice, & I remember whatever I bought last year was easy to use. I am so disappointed in this product! It is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from what I expected — it’s extremely thick & gloopy & sticks to anything & everything, making doing a big job alone really difficult. My gloved fingers stuck together constantly, I couldn’t wipe on a single layer neatly, what a mess! Needless to say I sanded my card catalog back down & went to Lowe’s to purchase Minwax which, after doing research I realized I used last year. Home Depot, please consider carrying this brand again & don’t bother with Watco!
