Q:Could you use this on cutting boards

Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help, Robert. While Rust-Oleum Watco Wipe-On Polyurethane provides a beautiful protective coating for wooden surfaces, it is not considered to be food safe. Therefore, we do not recommend applying to surfaces that will come in direct contact with food. Instead, we would recommend using our Rust-Oleum Varathane Butcher Block Oil as it is considered food safe and provides a protective finish for wooden surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-Pint-Butcher-Block-Oil-in-Carbon-Gray-370150/316419487 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Is this a good replacement for the old high VOC oil-based wipe on poly? I like to wipe on then come back and rub off excess 30 minutes - 1 hr later. Will I be in for disaster if I approach my project like this with this product?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! We recommend, after applying the Rust-Oleum Watco Wipe-On Poly, that you allow the product to dry for 4 hours and apply another. This would be different from wiping off the excess, since this will be film building, and you'll want to continue to add coats. We would suggest avoiding doing so to ensure desired results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Q:I applied a thick coat about 14 hours ago to my butcher block countertops and it's still sticky. Am I supposed to sand it afterwards or just wait longer to see if this dries better.

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your response. Keep in mind that 3 light coats of Rust-Oleum Watco Wipe-On Polyurethane are recommended for the best protection. Before applying the final coat, lightly sand the surface in the direction of the grain using #220 grit sandpaper. Then remove all sanding dust with a rag dampened with mineral spirits, tack cloth, or a vacuum. Applying one thick coat will significantly extend the dry time. We suggest wiping the surface with denatured alcohol to clear up the tackiness. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  You are supposed to apply multiple thin coats, and potentially sand between coats with 0000-steel wool or a 400 grit (or finer) sandpaper. I would use alcohol or naphtha to remove the residue and get back down to an un-sticky condition. Apply additional coats as needed.

A:  Same problem here. Thinking I’m going to sand it and start over with a different product, ugh.

Q:Wood was sanded to 220 grit and prestained .Stain was linseed oil, artist oil paint, mineral spirits and a few drops of Japan Drier. I have applied seven coats of wipe-on poly over four days.

          Answer This Question

A:  I think the answer depends more on what you have applied before the wipe on poly. Check to make sure the drying times of the other items have been followed. I usually don't apply anything other than the poly and I give it 24 hours between coats. Also, I apply very thin coats. Just enough on the rag to see the shine when you apply it. Thickness of coats and humidity are the biggest factors.

A:  Glad to lend a hand. Rust-Oleum Watco Wipe-On Poly can be buffed once it is fully dry after 24 hours. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  Although the can said it could be recoated in 4 hours it was still tacky at the 7 hour mark. Because of that, I waited 24 hours before wet sanding.

                One application or two
I bought this because a chalk painted 3 bookcases. I have got to say it did darken the "coastal blue" paint to from a lighter blue to a gorgeous darker blue. I did use a rag to apply and not a paint brush. I used only one coat and i am trying to decide if I need another coat. Either way for tge price and ease of use I would do it again on another piece of furniture.

                A simpler solution
No brush marks or drips but it will take a couple more coats. Definitely much less time sanding. Works really well on rounded edges.

Ended up with a beautiful finish.
I am not very experienced with wood-finishing, and needed something with a pretty fast cure. I found it to wipe easily onto a well sanded table-top. After leaving it for approx. 4 hours, it still felt a little tacky, so I was concerned that maybe I didn't mix it well enough or something. I was doing some cleaning of other wood pieces with a cloth and mineral spirits. On a whim, I took a clean cloth with small amount of mineral spirits on it and quickly wiped down my table top, and immediately dried it with a clean cloth. I have no idea why, but the tackiness disappeared in minutes, leaving a beautiful finish. After sitting all night, my Grand-kids were thrilled with their Christmas gift of an old sewing table/new craft table. I will continue to use this on other projects.

The WATCO is too much like a poly-urethane paint, not a wipe-on. Apparently Home Depot has stopped carrying the Miniwax Wipe-On-Poly and replaced it with WATCO. I much preferred the Miniwax for delicate furniture.

This was so easy to use. I applied with cheeseclothe and rubbed it right on. After the first two coats I used fine steel wool to sand it out and then added another coat. Leaves a nice satin like finish.
