Does the expansion tank go on cold water inlet piping to the hot water heater or on the outlet hot water piping?
Asked by: Lou
The expansion tank goes on the cold inlet side between the water shut-off valve and the tank. When water is heated in a closed vessel or system, pressure builds. The expansion tank has a bladder which gets compressed when the water heater pressure increases as a result of the water being heated. When someone opens a faucet, the bladder will push back and equalize to line pressure. There is also a Schrader valve on the expansion tank to adjust the air pressure in the bladder. For proper operation, the air pressure should be adjusted within a couple psi of line pressure.

After 9/11 most utilities installed check valves in their water meters to keep bad guys from pumping water into public water systems. These check valves keep pressure from relieving into the water main to you now have to provide your own pressure protection.

Expansion Tank

I will have to purchase a new hot water heater because the one I have is either a 1996 or 1997 model and has started to leak. The plumber told me I would need to install an expansion tank on the new hot water heater. My neighbor overhead the conversation and said I did not have to install an expansion tank the plumber was trying to take advantage of me. I went to Home Depot to price a hot water heater and spoke with an associate. The associate also said there was no need for an expansion tank. He had never heard of an expansion tank. He is currently working in the plumbing section where the hot water heaters are located and you never heard of an expansion tank???? What is the purpose of an expansion tank? Please explained this to me. Do I really need to have an expansion tank installed on my new hot water heater??? Help me
Asked by: TNGirl
My indirect water heater is 10 years old and leaking. The plumber that built my house did not install the $50 expansion tank. Probably cut the lifespan of the water heater in half. I'm replacing it myself and absolutely installing an exp tank. It acts as a cushion for when the heated water expands and has no place to go due a backflow preventer usually found near the water meter
