Many opportunities exist within this S4S poplar board family. These top grade boards may be used for cabinetry, furniture, shelving, trim, hobby and other utilitarian work. This smooth-textured board can be painted or stained to compliment or match your homes decor. Unlike pine they do not allow bleed through and have less grain raise. Due to the similar grain pattern they can be stained to imitate other more expensive species, such as walnut or cherry. All our boards are double end trimmed with a molded finish providing a high quality appearance for any do-it-yourself or professional project. Also, our boards are SFI certified.
Actual Dimensions: 1/2 in. thickness x 5-1/2 in. width x 3 ft. length

Answer This Question
A:Â Yes, that is what I used it for. To my surprise poplar is much harder then pine, all my holes for wood screws had to pre drilled.
by|Sep 4, 2019
A:Â Yes, the 1/2 in. x 6 in. x 3 ft. Poplar board is strong enough to be used as a shelf, but it all depends on the span between supports and the weight of material placed on the board.
by|Aug 19, 2019
A:Â Keep it short or reinforce edges with 3/4 material.

I used this board to make a sign. It had a smooth finish so very little sanding was required. Since it is poplar, a 36 in sign was not too heavy to hang.

I went in to find a small piece of a hardwood. I later found that while poplar is considered a hardwood tree, the wood itself leans to a softwood. That did no suit my purpose and I was not confident that using it would be safe for my purpose. It was marketed in the hardwood section.

Very good material - easy to cut with a handsaw and use in small projects. I was making a drawer for my workbench in the garage.
