Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

About This Product

Every piece meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This lumber is pressure treated in order to protect it from termites and rot. Ideal for a variety of applications, including decks, docks, ramps, and other outdoor projects where lumber is exposed to the elements. This lumber is color infused with lasting cedar-tone colorant. When used properly, it is both safe and environmentally friendly.Treated wood is typically still wet when it's delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.

Q:love the color of cedar tone. Thinking of a ceiling application going down the basement stairs, Would you assume they would shrink inside the house less than outside?
      by|Sep 30, 2019
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  The equilibrium moisture content (EMC) the wood will end up at indoors is somewhere between 6% and 11% in most areas of the continental US. The EMC outside is higher, typically in the 12-19% range, and it will fluctuate more based on temperature, humidity, season, rainfall, etc. Shrinkage of wood only occurs from the fiber saturation point (about 30% MC) down to bone dry (0%). Because wood is used indoors it has a lower EMC, thus will shrink slightly more than what is used outside.

We tried to do our best picking the boards or in the store, but still managed to get then home with 6 of 10 boards horribly warped and bowed. This was super obvious because they were being used to repair a deck. As soon as you later them next to the existing straight boards, you saw how ridiculous they were. We made do with spacers because it was already so hard to fail 12 ft boards in an SUV. Very disappointing

For the price I didn't expect high quality wood but I was expecting usable wood. Severe warpage, lots of cracking, lots of bark on the edges . Took it back.

Even after swapping out a board at the store, getting them home I found they were warped in ways that I couldn’t decipher looking at them at Home Depot. Just make sure before you but that whatever your application is you can find a way to straighten/flatten the curves and bends of these boards out. One of the four was good.

I use the 1x 6 x 12 boards for a fence I am building and found that most of the boards that were delivered had so many imperfections. It’s like they took all of the rejected and warped boards and delivered them to me. Since they were 12’ long I couldn’t just run them back and return them either.
