        How long to dry?
        ByOct 4, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Hello Whpjr, the duration for wood to dry varies based on the climate and the amount of sunlight it receives. In the summer, pressure-treated lumber exposed to direct sunlight can dry out within a few days. In cool and damp conditions or when shaded, the drying process will be significantly prolonged.

Please advise how to reduce the chance of warping. I’ve had two projects I’ve built with these boards warp months after completing them – I thought I had dried the boards enough (a few weeks indoors). Please provide detailed instructions.

            Answer This Question

DeckRedo, Warping, twisting, and cracking are a natural characteristic of lumber, caused by the wetting and drying process. This cannot always be avoided. We do recommend applying a sealer with a UV protectant on the lumber. This helps slow the expansion and contraction of the lumber, leading to less warping of the product.

Seriously. You should fix your specs. Is this wood actually 3.5" thick (nominal 2") and 1.5" wide (nominal 4")?

That's normal. No wood is made to those specs anymore. They're all 1/2" shorter or so.

                  By|Feb 22, 2026

Yes, the actual dimensions of this lumber are 1.5 inches thick and 3.5 inches wide. The nominal dimensions are 2" x 4". Actual dimensions are after the wood has been processed. Nominal is the size right after its been cut.

This was an online order and the Home Depot associates made sure to select great, straight, high quality boards. I’ll be using these to build a mini golf course made of wood boxes!

Rebuilt wood swing gate in Virginia Beach, pressure-treated wood is a must-use for durability. Store inventory was great, tho most of the wood was a little damp, so had to go through a number of pieces to find the driest. Installed same-day, gate back to being sturdy and will last in the elements for years.

We used these 2x4’s to anchor the lattice panels to my deck railing. They provided more stability since the panels were quite tall. They will look great, once they age and weather.

By nature it will biodegrade ,but by pressure treating it will last. Ten fold - I high recommend it.
