About This Product

Pressure-Treated Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This double treated Ground Contact lumber must be used for applications where treated lumber is difficult to maintain, repair or replace. Treated lumber is critical to the performance and safety of an entire system or construction such as deck joists, beams and ledger boards. An additional benefit of treated lumber is its defense against rot and insect infestation for its vast majority of applications. Southern yellow pine is responsibly manufactured, safe and environmentally friendly when used as directed.Treated wood is typically still wet when it's delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.

  • Made of pine
  • Ground contact treated lumber can be used in both above ground and ground contact exterior applications
  • Backed by a lifetime limited warranty against termite infestation and rot
  • 5/4 in. x 6 in. x 12 ft.
  • Must use ground contact pressure treated lumber where lumber is at risk for poor air circulation, less than 6 in. from the ground or has poor or no water drainage below the structure
  • Ground contact treated lumber should be used in tropical climates or applications likely to have prolonged contact with vegetation or leaf litter
  • Ideal for a variety of general uses including exposed structures, sill plates, decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor applications
  • Uniform thickness, density and appearance for stable and long lasting performance
  • Hot-dip galvanized fasteners are recommended
  • Individual pieces of pressure treated lumber will reference ground contact on the end tag
  • WeatherShield includes water repellant in the treatment process
  • No two pieces of lumber are the same.
  • Color, grain pattern and texture will vary as well.
  • Premium grade lumber should be used when small knots are the desired appearance for your lumber project
  • Premium grade is a high-quality lumber that has smaller and fewer knots.

Q:What is the difference between these "premium" and normal pressure treated? They both say rot and termite proof and 2x ground. I notice the "normal" is about 5.5 inch vs 5 5/8 for these, but that don't matter to me. These are almost twice as much cost.

      Answer This Question

A:  Woodie, Premium grade lumber should be used when small knots are the desired appearance for your lumber project, also is a high-quality lumber that has smaller and fewer knots. Standard grade will have more natural characteristics than premium grade and the size of knots may be larger, also will contain more knots that will range in size.

A:  Premium boards have little to no knots and much more appealing. They take stain better after allowing them time to dry first. Less likely to warp. Less shrinkage.

A:  From all that bought the premium has less knots but if you carefully look thru the pile you can find the less expensive board with few knots.

            Answer This Question

A:  I'd be leary of using pressure treated lumber inside my home because of the chemicals used to make them impervious to the weather.

            by|Oct 4, 2022

A:  Demitch256, Yes this can be used for that application. This ground contact pressure-treated lumber must be used where lumber is at risk for poor air circulation, less than 6 in. from the ground or has poor or no water drainage below the structure.

The boards themselves were pretty good. Out of the 40 boards I ordered, 2 had more knots than I would have expected from "premium" decking. I used them in Home Depot's Slip Fence so they were stacked vertically, side to side. The fence has only been up for 2 weeks and there are a few areas where the boards are starting to warp. Although these boards are recommended by HD for this fence, I think a 5/4 inch think tongue and groove board would have worked better.

The standard is sub standard and the premium is standard when dealing with the knots on the edges and the pitted knots. I like the ground contact rating. Lowe's has the same premium board for the same price but it is not ground contact rated therefore not as weather resistant. I had to pick through a lot to get what I wanted for the customer.

The boards are pretty decent. We're giving a deck a makeover and using these for the floor top. You have to be choosy going through the pile, and even then we ended up returning some due to splitting or warping when they dried out, but I think that's to be expected..

The boards are good, however, the sizes are inconsistent. Some boards are as much as 1/4" wider, which makes it hard when you've already laid half of your deck and find size differences.

It is very hard to find a piece of wood that is not an outside cut with bark showing or is full of knots. In addition, the width dimension between the 8' boards and 12' boards were up to 3/16" which makes it very difficult to match up the boards on long runs. It was not isolated; throughout the boards i purchased, the dimensions were not consistant, even in the same bunks.

Dear HomeDepotCustomer, we are sorry that this product did not meet your expectations but do appreciate your feedback. While we like to think of the naturally occurring, unique characteristics of each piece of wood as its story – not as its defects – we also understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, if it’s highly important that your wood look a certain way, we recommend hand-selecting your pieces at your local store. If there is anything that we can do, or if you would like to discuss this further, please reach out to UFP Retail Solutions at UFPRetailCS@UFPI.com, and one of our customer service representatives will be happy to assist you.
