Questions & Answers

There is no tray for wood chips on this model? Can I use wood chips?

I am buying this for my brothers bday and it will be his first smoker. He loves to grill large for his huge family and likes to use wood chips. With no tray, can he still use the chips? Can I have this shipped his house in GA, is there a fee? Also, is this difficult to assemble? If yes, can I pay for the smoker to be assembled?
Asked by: GiftForBro
Wood Chunks work better. But chips can also be used. I threw my chips on the coals, but it seems like it gets consumed way too fast. So I have seen on the internet that some users filled a coffee can with chips and placed that in the middle of the charcoal pan, and then surrounded the coffee can with lit coals.

Can't decide 18.5 or 22.5

I'm new to smoking food. I have tried it on my weber genesis grill which turned out fine but I want to smoke turkeys for thanksgiving and I think WSM would be the better way to go but what size should I get? I've read that the 22.5 burns alot of fuel and is hard to maintain temps. where as the 18.5 wont hold large meats like whole racks of ribs you have to cut them in half which is no big deal but will it hold a turkey? Or turkeys?
Asked by: crodon963
crodon963, By all means get the 22.5" model, you won't be sorry! It's better to have a little to much room than not enough when you need it. You can Barbecue small or large on the 22.5' Smokey Mountain Cooker, use less fuel to cook smaller amounts of food! Hope this helps with you're question!

How difficult is it to add wood or charcoal during you cook?

Is there enough space between the water pan and the fire box to easily add fuel to the fire?
Asked by: Tigerbassin77
Not difficult at all. Just open the side door, and pop them in.

Customer Reviews

22-1/2 in. Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker in Black with Cover and Built-In Thermometer is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 234.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Smoker - Bad Customer Service The smokey mountain is great however, the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. As an owner of multiple Weber products (my grill was my latest and last purchase of weber) who actually takes the time to register their purchases I expected to be treated a little bit better when I unknowingly made a purchase through an "unauthorized" dealer. Buyer BEWARE who you are purchasing from. This product is fantastic but there is NO distinction between an authorized and unauthorized dealer. Do not chance your warranty on such a high dollar item. I certainly would not have if I thought a brand new item could be sold and shipped from someone who is "unauthorized".

I finally said enough is enough and got the WSM and my only regret I didn't do it sooner. You can so easily control your temps for hours on end with this thing, it's incredible. The water pan is a fantastic touch and really helps keep your temps dialed in to 200-250 range. The only downside is it uses a lot of fuel for the 22.5" model. It takes nearly a full bag of Kingsford Blue to start. That will last you hours; adding only 10-15 unlit briquettes per hour or two. It can easy extend it 10+ hours with minimal effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My largest smoker Following a microburst that sent my 18" flying to never never land I replaced it with the 22" charcoal WSM. It accommodates about everything that I need smoked, 15lb turkey, two slabs of baby backs (18" ea.). Still dialing in the cook times. Using sand in the water pan to compensate for temp. fluctuation with a water pan resting on top of the sand. With this configuration I get the benefits of the water and warmer stable temperature. The next mod. will be a hinged top so I don't have to lift off the lid during the cook. Family said, Best Turkey ever! Don't forget to brine!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WSM 22.5 Awesome This beauty is a smoking beast. I’ve done multiple Boston butts and brisket simultaneously for a few parties in 2017. Temperature control for the 22.5 is easy to accomplish. New out of the box it will run a tad hot around 250 degrees but after a few cooks on it you should have no problem with 225. The smoke flavor is excellent coming out of this bullet smoker. I will be buying another one come spring time because my BBQ parties are now must attend events so with more people comes more food which means I need another smoker to feed the masses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a very good smoker There are several features that I really like about this product, first off is the size of the grates. It allows you to cook a lot of food all at once. Racks of ribs fit flat on the grill without needing to bend or cut them. Love the water pan which provides an indirect cooking environment. Having the dual grates which basically doubles the cooking surface is wonderful. It is also nice that all of that is included. One downside is that you tend to go through a lot more fuel than I am used to with other models.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoking is one of life's best joys,... I'm delighted with my 22" WSM smoker. I bought it a year ago and have used it to smoke everything from pork ribs, beef brisket, whole chickens and wings, to cold smoked cheese. With WSM's two grills, I can smoke ribs and a brisket at the same time. A good meat thermometer and a chimney to light charcoal are both musts. Check out all the good Youtube videos on smoking. There are many different techniques. Try the ones that look interesting to find what works best to you. Some like "bark" on their meat, but to me it often tastes like jerky, so I keep my meat moist by mopping it hourly. I like my pork ribs with some chew ("toothsome") so I stop when they reach 165° internal temperature. St. Louis ribs are prettier for competition, but to me plain old pork spareribs taste as good and they're cheaper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I’m pleased. I’ve only used it once since buying it in the fall. It works well, but I wish I would have purchased the smaller 18” model. The 22” is just too large for the the amount of food I will smoke. I smoked a 9lb pork butt for about 16 hours and used 25lbs of Kingsford blue. If I could find someone to purchase it for the cost of a 18” model I would sell it and purchase the smaller size. I’ve grilled on a Weber Kettle for over 20 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great smoker, especially for a beginner like me! I am extremely pleased with my WSM. I am completely new to smoking, but thanks to some great YouTube videos, tips and tricks, I was able to have 4 great, and successful, cooks. The WSM design was a great help to those successful cooks, though. Once you get your temp set, it’s pretty much a set it and forget kind of deal. I rarely have to adjust the vents to maintain temps. I have smoked pork butt (pulled pork), both spare and baby back ribs, an awesome 20lb thanks giving turkey, and a Texas style brisket. Although I do wish the WSM came with wheels on it, it is still an overall great smoker. Not having wheels isn’t enough to take stars away from it. I feel this smoker will last me many years, and many smokes to come. I was actually so pleased with weber, and their WSM, that I just purchased a weber master touch last week. I am definitely weber for life!
