Questions & Answers

There is no tray for wood chips on this model? Can I use wood chips?

I am buying this for my brothers bday and it will be his first smoker. He loves to grill large for his huge family and likes to use wood chips. With no tray, can he still use the chips? Can I have this shipped his house in GA, is there a fee? Also, is this difficult to assemble? If yes, can I pay for the smoker to be assembled?
Asked by: GiftForBro
absolutely he can, either soak them first and put them on directly or buy a small wood chip box that holds the chips and is perforated to allow smoke out the holes (that's what I have).

Can't decide 18.5 or 22.5

I'm new to smoking food. I have tried it on my weber genesis grill which turned out fine but I want to smoke turkeys for thanksgiving and I think WSM would be the better way to go but what size should I get? I've read that the 22.5 burns alot of fuel and is hard to maintain temps. where as the 18.5 wont hold large meats like whole racks of ribs you have to cut them in half which is no big deal but will it hold a turkey? Or turkeys?
Asked by: crodon963
crodon963, By all means get the 22.5" model, you won't be sorry! It's better to have a little to much room than not enough when you need it. You can Barbecue small or large on the 22.5' Smokey Mountain Cooker, use less fuel to cook smaller amounts of food! Hope this helps with you're question!

How difficult is it to add wood or charcoal during you cook?

Is there enough space between the water pan and the fire box to easily add fuel to the fire?
Asked by: Tigerbassin77
Not difficult at all. Just open the side door, and pop them in.

Customer Reviews

22 in. Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker in Black with Cover and Built-In Thermometer is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 400.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent smoker Very happy with smoker. I have used other smokers in 20 years of smoking, but they don't compare to the simplicity of a WSM. Fill it up with charcoal and wood chunks and dump a chimney of lit charcoal and you are ready to cook for 10 to 12 hours without having to add more fuel. Temperature control is very easy to control and maintain. There is plenty of cooking area using both grates, I have cooked 5 racks of ribs at 1 time. It is a well built smoker that should last for years. My only issues are the door to add fuel is a little flimsy and leaks a little smoke, but can be sealed with insulating tape. Also the thermometer in the lid is off by a few degrees. Weber customer support is very good if you have any questions or problems. I would recommend to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Weber Smokey mountain 22 revuew I bought the grill about one month ago. I already had a Treager 34 but the Treager doesn't give a very good smoke ring without using additional pellet tubes for assistance. So far, I have smoked 1 brisket and two pork butts on the Weber and love the difference in temperature control, smoke ring on the meat and flavor. I also added a DigiQ controller that works fantastic with the Weber grill and I see no variation when I set the temperature as compared to a 3 to 5 degree plus or minus difference of that on the Treager. I love the Weber! I am handicapped with limited mobility but this grill makes grilling easy for me with the least amount of effort/assistance.

I do a lot of smoking, baby back ribs, chicken, briskets, roasts, and pork butts. The larger model will allow me to use more charcoal for longer smokes, thus eliminating the need to add charcoal during the smoking process. It is easy to assemble. The Smokey Mountain, in my opinion, is the very best smoker on the market, in terms of reliability, ease of use, smoking results, and durability. Most of those on the pro circuit use the Smokey Mountain smoker. If you enjoy smoking meat, or want to learn, this is the one you want to get.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from impossible to add charcoal I bought this smoker to save space on my small cooking deck, its footprint is much smaller than my horizontal brinkmann was, but I find I need twice the prep space. on long cooks when extra charcoal of smoking chunks are needed, it's nearly impossible to add fuel to the fire. The water pan covers the entire burn area and cannot be removed unless you empty the cooker completely (hence the larger prep space) In order to add wood to the smoker I have to take the meats racks out, then remove the water pan, then put it all back together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and very portable. This is a great smoker, a lot of people favor the 18”, and I almost went with the 18 due to some reviews that claimed they were having trouble getting the 22 below 275 degrees. I find that to be user error, I’ve been able to cook anywhere between 225 and 325 and maintain where ever I want. I’ve cooked chickens, ribs (6 whole spares at a time), whole prime brisket, and short ribs. It’s really the best bang for the buck, we’ll built, large enough to feed a crowd, and it fits easily in the truck when we travel for a weekend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It’s huge ! Bought this bad boy at my local hardware store and have smoked a 20lbs brisket and a few pork butts no problem did a amazing job holding a consistent temp at 250 my only issue was when I picked this Beauty up at the store and took her home it was missing the chrome trim around the dome temp dial so I called weber and they were going to ship me one but never got a confirmation email or anything and it never showed up. I since bought a different thermometer oh well still love the wsm 22 i now want a 14 wsm lol

After a month I have found: Pros: The temperature is easy to adjust and control. The finishes are very good. Probe grommet works well for temperature probes and thermometers. Door gives easy access to service or check fuel. Cons: The door does not seal well, making it difficult to extinguish the charcoal at the end of the cook. The middle section and charcoal bowl are not round and will need adjustment. Overall the price is attractive and with some adjustment it works well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works like a webber Takes a bit more finesse than other products out there because you cant start and set it, then walk away for 10 hours but if you pay attention it works great. The door is really flimsy and leaks air in and heat out to a frustrating level. Not sure why Weber felt the need to use aluminium foil for a door and not the piece of steel they cut out to make the hole, but plan on buying a 3rd party replacement with this. It would be 5 stars if it had a better door.
