Questions & Answers

There is no tray for wood chips on this model? Can I use wood chips?

I am buying this for my brothers bday and it will be his first smoker. He loves to grill large for his huge family and likes to use wood chips. With no tray, can he still use the chips? Can I have this shipped his house in GA, is there a fee? Also, is this difficult to assemble? If yes, can I pay for the smoker to be assembled?
Asked by: GiftForBro
absolutely he can, either soak them first and put them on directly or buy a small wood chip box that holds the chips and is perforated to allow smoke out the holes (that's what I have).

Can't decide 18.5 or 22.5

I'm new to smoking food. I have tried it on my weber genesis grill which turned out fine but I want to smoke turkeys for thanksgiving and I think WSM would be the better way to go but what size should I get? I've read that the 22.5 burns alot of fuel and is hard to maintain temps. where as the 18.5 wont hold large meats like whole racks of ribs you have to cut them in half which is no big deal but will it hold a turkey? Or turkeys?
Asked by: crodon963
crodon963, By all means get the 22.5" model, you won't be sorry! It's better to have a little to much room than not enough when you need it. You can Barbecue small or large on the 22.5' Smokey Mountain Cooker, use less fuel to cook smaller amounts of food! Hope this helps with you're question!

How difficult is it to add wood or charcoal during you cook?

Is there enough space between the water pan and the fire box to easily add fuel to the fire?
Asked by: Tigerbassin77
Not difficult at all. Just open the side door, and pop them in.

I do a lot of smoking, baby back ribs, chicken, briskets, roasts, and pork butts. The larger model will allow me to use more charcoal for longer smokes, thus eliminating the need to add charcoal during the smoking process. It is easy to assemble. The Smokey Mountain, in my opinion, is the very best smoker on the market, in terms of reliability, ease of use, smoking results, and durability. Most of those on the pro circuit use the Smokey Mountain smoker. If you enjoy smoking meat, or want to learn, this is the one you want to get.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good smoker. Significant design flaw. I love the WSM. It holds temps well. I've used it for short smokes--fish, chicken, turkey, ribs. And have used it for overnight smokes of pork butts and briskets. The design flaw is that the lid, unlike Weber kettle grills, fits inside the body of the smoker. The Weber kettles, the lid has a lip that goes over the base. Since the lid of the WSM goes inside the body, any time it rains, it accumulates in the bottom of the smoker. It makes quite the messy cleanup if there is ash in the bottom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Smoker for the money Purchased the WSM last summer and haven't put it away since. Setup was so easy, you can have it built in under an hour. Performed great out of the box and the more you use it, the better it gets. I have cooked chicken, ribs, wings, all kinds, but my favorite so far was a 21 pound turkey at Christmas. This machine blew me away, one being that it can hold a 21 pound turkey, and two, being the best turkey I have ever made.

Having spent my entire BBQ career (backyard bbq'ing) using an offset stick burner, this def is a nice change of pace. Once you get it dialed in it will hold temps within 10/15 degrees for hours. Anyone who used a stick burner can appreciate that. If you're a BBQ lover and like ease of use, this is for you!

And when i first assembled the smoker the lid wouldn’t fit. I realized the both the lid and the barrel body were not truly round. I had to do a lot of adjusting to get them right.
