A:  Neither, this is the bottom grate for the charcoal and not the top grate where. you put your food. It measures about 13.5".

A:  Hi! Thank you for your inquiry. We are happy to help. Yes, the grate measures 17.5'' on the 18.5'' charcoal grill. The diameter of the bowl itself is 18.5''. Hopefully this helps. If you need anything further please reach out directly at reviews@weberstephen.com. Thank you!

A:  IMO, I would say condensation on the inside of grill due to temperature variances. Another guess would be perhaps the bottom vents were open or even slightly open. These grates always rust if the unit is left outdoors. The cooking grate is stainless steel, yet the charcoal grate is just "plated" steel. The plating cooks off and the exposed steel is exposed to the elements. They are cheap to replace.

A:  Hello, we're sorry to learn about your charcoal grate. We can only speculate as to what may have caused the corrosion, but if you reach out to us at reviews@weberstephen.com we can look into whether or not it may still be covered by warranty. Thanks.

A:  That's nature. Although metals break down at different rates, they rust. I suggest storing your cleaned grate in your garage. It works for mine. Hope that helps.

A:  How long did it take to rust and how bad? Humidity can do it but the fats from meat can also be very corrosive if left on the grate.

A:  Probably because the top and bottom vents were left open allowing moisture to seep in.

This charcoal grate is awesome. It's holding up to the extreme heat. I used to have grates that couldn't withstand the hi temperature. But this is the best replacement ever. I only had been using this for a couple of weeks. But I can tell this will last a lot longer than my previous grates. And the price was very affordable. It was shipped and received very quickly. Thanks Home Depot. This is a purchase that I'm glad I made.

I use this grill inside my Brinkmann smoker as a lower shelf so I can smoke more at the same time.

Perfect improvement for my Brinkmann smoker
I picked this up to use in the charcoal pan in my Brinkmann Gourmet Smoker (lovingly known in BBQ circles as the "ECB"). One of the common complaints with the Brinkmann smokers is that the charcoal snuffs itself out sitting flat on the metal pan. This grate (along with a few s-rings) allowed me to get air under the charcoal, which allows the coals to burn evenly for 6-8 hours easily. In addition, by using the s-rings with this grate, the modification takes only a minute or two and involves no drilling or cutting into the metal. Simply hang the s-rings on the holes in the pan, and you're done (see photo). The durability of this weber grate is excellent, and I highly recommend this well-built replacement grate for any grill/smoker application.

Description is for an 18” Weber charcoal grill. But it only 13” in diameter. Turns out it’s for the bottom of the 18” charcoal grill that’s tapered to hold the 13” grate. Very misleading description
