Answer

Hi Don, <br><br> The unit is rated 12,000 BTU under the ASHRAE -128 Standard and 7,700 BTU under the SACC-DOE Standard. <br><br> The SACC rating is a result of the newer federal test standard that was established by the Department of Energy. Models manufactured before 2017 were tested under a different standard (ASHRAE) that produced a higher cooling capacity output. While the SACC BTU’s are lower than the previous ASHRAE BTU’s, the construction and cooling capacity of this model(s) remains unchanged. Both the SACC and ASHRAE ratings are included for consumer comparison.<br><br> If you have additional questions, our Customer Support Team is available Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM PST at 1-866-WHYNTER (1-866-949-6837) and at support@whynter.com.

Is this a self evaporating unit?

I don't know where the drain is located, but I haven't had to deal with any condensation draining out of the unit yet after a month of use and living in a very humid environment (Hawaii). That said, I did place the drain hose in a bucket, and put an appliance tray with a 1.5 inch lip to catch any water. Might be overkill, but I prefer to have and not need than to need and not have.

I don't know why Buds question was ignored, obviously a portable air conditioner needs a window k...

As someone who doesn't live in a part of the country where air conditioning is normally not required, I will confess to being ignorant of what a "portable air conditioner" means. What is OBVIOUS to you may not be so obvious to others. I would say, it is NOT OBVIOUS to someone unfamiliar with air conditioning to confuse these units with the ones that claim to be air conditioners but are actually evaporative coolers that sit on a shelf or counter. "Portable" is a misnomer. If you pick these up (60-80 pounds) to move them room-to-room (dragging hoses and window kits along with?) this hardly seems to be a "portable" unit. What makes them "portable" as opposed to the more permanent types that are mounted in window frames just means you can (with effort) move these mini-monsters around. If you're a senior citizen with mobility issues living in an upstairs/downstairs unit, I'm thinking these are hardly "portable."

Does this unit have a window kit?

Answer

Hello Bud, <br><br> Please note, all of our portable air conditioners require a window kit to be installed in order to properly function. <br><br> If you have additional questions, our Customer Support Team is available Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM PST at 1-866-WHYNTER (1-866-949-6837) and at support@whynter.com.

I would’ve given 5 stars but I didn’t like how the window piece had to be cut down in order to properly work. Nothing about this was mentioned. But as far as functionality, it blows extremely cold and gets the job done. Haven’t used the dehumidifier yet so I can’t really comment on that function.

Setup was a cinch, although you will want to purchase some extra foam for really sealing things around your window frame nicely. To avoid having to screw into the frame or use the included metal bracket I purchased a half inch dowel rod and cut it to length to act as a slide stop for the window. Keeps the sliding part nice and snug against the plastic insert provided by Whynter without drilling into my window frame. The unit works fantastic for a small room (about 13x13x8) which is a little smaller than what this is (allegedly) rated for. Keep in mind the DoE ratings are less than the manufacturer, and you should ALWAYS use the DoE ratings as a guide. I haven't installed it yet, but purchased some insulation to wrap around the exhaust hose, which is supposed to help a lot. I also purchased an appliance tray which I set the AC unit in, and a bucket for the drain hose. However, I have not seen a single drop, this unit is using evaporation through the exhaust hose to expel all the moisture so far. I live on Oahu in Hawaii where the humidity is between 65% and 80 percent every single day. Temperatures are ranging between 73F and 83F right now, and my room is comfortably down to 72 degrees from about 79 or so within 20 minutes of turning this on. Finally, I plan on taping some plastic around the window insert to ensure I don't have any leak to the outside. I purchased a Kill-A-Watt to monitor the energy consumption, and it is pulling about double what my split AC in the master bedroom does. BL: Portable AC is far less energy efficient than any other AC out there. KwH usage is pretty high, but a lot less than I expected. I think it is using about 8-10 KwH per day when I run it about half the time.
