Questions & Answers

when having the heat on do i need to have window hookup, or can the unit heat by it self?

when having the heat on do i need to have window hookup, or can the unit heat by it self?
Asked by: jose
Yes you do need to have the exhaust side of the vent tubes hooked up so to vent the cold air outside. The intake side should be blocked off so inside air is pulled through the air filter

Has anyone tried this portable air condition in and in close trailer 8 1/2 x 24

Asked by: EJ
This model is designed for up to a 500 sq. ft. space, a smaller capacity unit such as the ARC-101CW or ARC-102CS models may be a better fit for your space. Our Consumer Support Team is available Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM PST at 1-866-WHYNTER (1-866-949-6837) and at support@whynter.com should you have additional questions.

Isn't it less efficient to pull hot air in from outside then cool that air through air conditioner?

Asked by: HL
Most portable units like this just have 1 hose supposedly sending hot air outside your house. What most don't think about is that in order for air to flow out that one hose, other air must be pulled back in from the outdoors thru window vents, dryer vents, attic, any path it can find. The fact that you're pulling the hot air from outside into the room you're trying to cool and mixing it with the air in the room in my mind makes those units design almost worthless (the only way you feel a bit of cooling is if you are right in front of the cooling vents). So you almost must have 2 hoses to have an "efficient" system where warm air from outside comes in one hose (but stays contained in that hose) and the hotter air created from the AC unit gets blown out the second. Meanwhile the room can be cooled by the unit circulating the air in the room thru the units cooling devices keeping the cool areas separated from the hot. The only other way to do that is with a window unit or central AC that totally separate the hot loop of the system from the cool loop.

Can you just use the interior air instead of running an intake hose which uses outside air?

Can you just use the interior air instead of running an intake hose which uses outside air?
Asked by: HL
You could do that which is what most units with one hose do for "blowing hot air outside". However, most don't think about the fact that if hot air is blowing out that hose, other air is coming into the house thru somewhere (attic, dryer vent, window vents, anywhere it can). So if you are pulling outside air into the house and same room eventually and mixing that incoming warm air with the air you're trying to cool, how good is that? Not very good. That's why the only style of AC units I'm considering is one like this with 2 hoses, one that keeps the warm air (coming in and going out) separate from the cool air inside (the warm air stays in both hoses for the hot parts of the AC system while the room can be the cool side). That's the only way to have a somewhat "efficient" portable AC unit system, otherwise a window unit (or whole house ones) will also keep the hot and cool separate like that while single hose units don't.

14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Dehumidifier, Heat and Remote is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 144.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sleek design, but lacking the technology to back it up. It looks good and cools nearly my entire town home if I leave it on 24/7, very impressive. Haven't had a chance to use the heater or dehumidifier yet. Cons - hoses are hard to unclip if you do intend to use the other features. The window adapter is too short by most any window's standards, so you'll have to rig your own contraption if you need more than 18 inches (lame! who has windows that small anyway?!?). If the settings on the remote don't match the settings on the machine (because you've manually adjusted the settings) the unit will switch to whatever the last setting on the remote is, so you'll have to reset it. The timer is a pain, I wish I could set it for specific times of the day. Surprisingly, I didn't notice that there is NOT a hepa filter on this which seem kind of standard for any system. And while I haven't had to drain it yet, I'm not sure how they expect me to with a drain mere millimeters off the ground (did I mention my unit weighs almost as much as I do and is upstairs on carpet?...will not enjoy the day I do have to drain it!) I'd return it if I could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good buy -- Strongly recommended This unit was purchased for use in an attached two-car garage located in south Texas. The garage has a fully finished interior with insulated garage doors (stryofoam), no less than R-21 in the outer wall, and R-30 in the attic space above the garage. Prior to purchasing this unit, it was not uncommon to have the interior temperature in the garage at 95+ degrees, largely due to two east-facing garage doors. (As mentioned, these doors are insulated with sytrofoam inserts.) Now, on the hottest days, the interior temperate never exceeds 85 (which is more than tolerable in South Texas!). This unit is attractive, appears to be energy efficient (nice SEER and kw/hr ratings), is reasonably quiet, and very easy to install or move/remove as needed. Again, most importantly, it cools my 450 square feet garage very well. Hope this helps you in your decision.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from no local repair service! Purchased this unit, lasted 1 year. Stopped cooling, called company and I was instructed to ship it to CA  from NH  (BE WARNED NO LOCAL REPAIR SERVICE) ,shipping cost would be about $400 paid  $500 for unit. After speaking with a local appliance repair Shop, the explanation he gave me was the A/C lines can't hold the new refrigerant without leaking in some instances, not worth repair costs. Long story short ,took it to the dump today,Whyte offered no help on this issue monetarily or otherwise, extremely  disappointed
