Answer This Question

A:  You should allow about 4 inches/10cm to allow the hoses to bend naturally.

A:  I'm thinking you might have it on cool and dehumidifier. It does recycle the water but I also use a separate dehumidifier so the air conditioner or does the air conditioning. Been running strong for couple years. I don't have a drain hose for mine either. Hopefully this helps.

A:  We use this to cool off our basement. You set the temp. It turns on and off to keep it at that temp.

A:  Once the room temperature reaches the target, it stops automatically. Sometimes I forgot to turn it off in the morning, then later I heard the motor running once the temperature increased. So I guess it doesn't, at lease I didn't notice it.

              Wow, This Portable is Awesome
This unit replaced an old unit that failed, it was the same size as this one but only had a single vent hose. Wow what a difference 2 hoses make! The old one struggled especially with humidity as it only had the one vent hose. I will never get another portable without 2 vent hoses. I am using this in a 3 car garage which doubles as a work space, the unit is undersized for the space but it keeps up well. Outside was 94F and the humidity was 85%, inside I had 77F and 51% humidity. The cooling is great considering the space but what is really outstanding is the humidity level. Very comfortable for a garage to be at 77F and 51% on those hot days. Highly recommend, and I've read other reviews that not only speak of this units performance but longevity. So I hope the later statement is also true. These units are louder than central AC or even window units, but I found this one to be so much quieter than my older unit and comparable to a window AC. The only Con I can think of is the vent kit for the window. It is really odd and you will probably want to get some weather stripping and/or tape to help seal it off. Other than that I give the unit all thumbs up.

I am extremely satisfied with this purchase. I'd never had any experience with this kind of air conditioner and I've been really delighted with my purchase and am so glad I did buy this. My shopping experience with Home Depot as well as my experience picking it up at my local Conroe store was superb as well. I have a "hot spot" in my apartment and the central air just can't keep up when the outside temperature gets in the mid 90's, so I thought I'd buy this to try to fix the problem and it's worked superbly. Installation was very easy and I REALLY like this product and am glad I bought it. It works great and the ordering, shopping and picking up process was way easier than I could have imagined. I read so many reviews online about portable air conditioners and settled on this one based on what I read and I have not been disappointed. Finally, this unit is actually much quieter than I expected even when running it on the highest cooling setting. I honestly couldn't be happier with my purchase and I highly recommend this air conditioner.

I purchased this model because I had a good experience with a Whynter 14,000 BTU model and this 12,000 BTU is replacing a smaller window unit in our master bedroom. The connections were not difficult. We have only used it a couple of times so far this spring but it is quieter than our old window unit. I like the fact that the illuminated display on the front goes out after a short time--I don't like light in the bedroom at night. It also seems to do a good job of eliminating moisture as there was only 3 or 4 tablespoons of condensation in the collection tray after running all night. The only thing I can't speak to is its durability.

We replaced a 6+ year old single hose portable air conditioner with this Whynter dual hose model. Read were dual systems are more efficient, so we went with the model from reviews on Home Depot and other review websites. Pro's: The old single hose unit was 11,000BTU's vs. 12,000BTU's for our new model. The foot print and weight were less than the old model. Grateful for this as the unit had to moved upstairs to a room above a garage. Unit is more quiet on low AC fan setting than our prior AC unit. The old units display stayed a constant blue light whether on/off, as long as it was plugged in the light was on. With this unit, the light stays on when using the remote or at the control panel for 10-15 seconds, then goes off, happy to get rid of the "night light" in that room. So far, the AC unit has cooled the room on low fan speed setting. I've had it run at 76 degrees and 73 degrees. The weather here has just started to get warm(81 today), so the real testing for the cooling will becoming in the next few months. I like the fact the unit was shipped with a cover and a place in the cover to store the manual. Unit moved easily on our carpeted floor to get into position. Remote works well from a decent distant, plus the remote displays the temp setting you placed the AC on. This unit blends in well with white to off white walls. Cons: I was not real found of attaching the four intake/outake nozzles on each of the two hoses. They kind of screwed/twisted on and I had no real way of knowing if I had them all of the way on, besides the fact I couldn't turn them anymore, so I assumed I had them correctly. So far, they haven't come off, so I must have done it right? Of course the window slide bar was to wide for my window, so I had to cut it down for it to fit the window. Did not have to do this for the old model. No big deal to do this part. My biggest issue: The window slider had four little screws that were supposed to screw into the other part of the slider to keep it extended and keep it from sliding from side to side. The little screws already in place on the vent piece, in my opinion, would barley break into the other pvc slider piece. Maybe that's all that was needed to keep it from sliding, but I took it a step further and drilled two 1/4 inch holes through both pieces and installed a 1/4 #20 3/4" nuts with a washer on each side of the plastic pieces.(see attached picture) This way I know for sure the two pieces will not move in the future. One other negative--This unit has a filter and a charcoal pre-filter that the manual says must be replaced every 2-3 months. Hate to have to spend $30 on a filter, but hopefully can get by with one filter a summer. Overall--Pleased so far, but hope to come back and extend the review once we get into July-August and how the AC performs in the real hot months, plus give a run down on AC usage to see if there is a difference in the electric bill during these months. This unit is suppose to be very efficient, time will tell. Hope this helps somebody---good luck in your purchase.

Not quite sure the merit for Meridith's review, she's only running one hose? That's a probIem and yes, you may have to modify the extender to use the other hole, but you need to have that 2nd hose attached - I would make modifications to ensure proper set up of the unit. The warranty may be void anyways, because install was not done correctly. A little work isn't a big deal to have the unit run properly. And water dump - part of living in humid conditions. Get a window unit if you don't want to have that hassle. I bought this for my son who works nights as an EMT, sleeps during the day and it's pushing 98 degrees here already. Our central air is pretty much useless in our rental condo - it dates back to the early 1970's - so I am looking at a $650 for the summer months. DONE with that. I've been using this unit for over a week now. It arrived in perfect condition in the shipping box - nothing broken or torn. The window kit worked perfectly on my side slider window, although the directions do state that if it didn't fit - a kit may be needed or a handy person could 'come up with a solution'. I had to use the extender on the bottom portion instead. Easy to set up and get the kit placed, hoses attached and poof - cooling here we come! This unit has surpassed my expectations for cooling - runs at 9amps so my power bill won't take a huge hit either. It is quiet...almost scary quiet! Doesn't take up alot of space in the corner by the closet and is on wheels if needed to be moved. My son is extremely happy which makes Momma happy. I am most likely going to buy a second unit for the main level and avoid running central air at all! Two of these units = 6 weeks of central air cost.

The trouble started immediately. I took the unit out of the packaging, and discovered that the window kit doesn't fit my fairly standard window. The short extender is too short, and the long one was so long it covered half of the intake tube's intended hole. I guess that means I'm supposed to butcher the window kit making the unit impossible to return -- interesting tactic. In the meantime, I can't use the AC because I don't want to put additional stress on the unit by trying to take in air from a partially covered hole. I had to stay home to accept delivery, so I set it up to act as a dehumidifier while I went to the office. I put the window kit in as best I could, hooked up the exhaust tube, and set the machine on dehumidify. When I got home later that night, the unit had shut itself off because it had maxed out its water capacity (76 pints). To drain the unit, I put it on an Ethan Allen coffee table with a bucket underneath. I removed the cap and the plug so the water could drain. A couple of cups later, and the water ceased pouring out. When I tipped the unit to help the water escape, water came pouring out of the machine from all possible crevices. Lovely. Not only is there a tremendous mess for me to clean up, but now I'm thinking about the insides corroding ... taking just long enough for the warranty to expire. I contact the company looking for advice. I turn the unit off and leave it alone. Except that the next day is too muggy out for me to live without an AC. So, I hook the unit up the way I did previously (exhaust tube in place, an attempt to cover the rest of the intake hole) and leave it on the coffee table with a bucket under it. The only way to get it to work is to leave the drain unplugged so it can dump 2-3 cups of water every 15 or so minutes. Maybe I'm crazy, but there's a huge difference in volume between 2-3 cups and 76 pints. I have yet to extract 76 pints. This is the only night I use the machine. I spend the rest of the week getting useless emails from Whynter explaining to me that under the cap is a plug I need to remove. Ignoring my photos, and sometimes replying to issues other than the one about which I am writing. After five days of daily emails, they told me to read the owner's manual. This unit cannot go back fast enough. I'm willing to believe that I got a defective unit and the rest are golden, but their customer service (or lack thereof) will keep me from purchasing anything from them ever again. It's been the most frustrating experience with a company that I've had in a long time.

Response from Whynter Customer ServiceJun 30, 2017
The air conditioner uses the patented auto drain or self-evaporative technology which exhausts condensation automatically in most environments via the exhaust hose. Please note that if the humidity is very high, the auto drain function will still exhaust the majority of the moisture. Most of the moisture will collect in the approximately 2 pint capacity water tank at the base of the air conditioner where a fan is used to aid with the evaporation process. If the drain plug is left open, the unit will not have the chance to evaporate the collected water as it's being manually drained continuously. If the tank becomes full, then it requires manual drainage.

This model has the capability of dehumidifying 76 pints of moisture in 24 hours but does not have a 76 pint storage tank. The moisture must be exhausted though the exhaust hose to the outside, drained using a hose installed to the upper continuous gravity drain port or manually drained from the 2 pint capacity water tank via the lower manual drain port.

A Premium Product at an Affordable Price
I have a multimedia conference room on my 3rd floor where the temperature is extremely hard to control during the summer months. I do have central air there, but central air alone cannot handle the room. After buying several portable ACs and returning them I finally put my hands on this one. This unit differs from the previous ones I owned in the following ways: -The compressor is extremely quiet and you can barely hear it. You hear the fans, which are right at 52db but just the fact you don't hear the annoying noise made by compressors, to me is great plus. It sounds more like white noise. Definitely the quietest of all the units I've had. -The thermostat on the unit is very accurate. With other units, they would shut off the compressor as if had reached the temperature when the room temperature was actually way above. -The dual hose system really makes a difference. This unit cools the room much faster because it doesn't draw warm air from other rooms to replace the air used during the cooling process. -The EER (energy efficiency ratio) is 12. Anything above 10 is good, but for a portable unit 12 is exceptional. The unit wont use more than 900W when the compressor is running. -I love the design. It blends in and it doesn't disturb the appearance of the room. -The window kit has very good quality and air won't leak on the back of the unit. With my central air in the off position, it manages to bring the room temperature to the low 70's with ease. My conference room is about 250sf but it is on the third and without any cooling on a summer day it reaches about 105 degrees by 4pm. So the unit performs very well. Overall this unit is very well designed. I wish I could adjust the vent from the remote control like the previous units I had. I've learned, however, that once you have it set the way you want, you don't need to change it anymore. So, not a big deal.

I bought this in the summer of 2021 & all I can say is "UGH". The worst. To be fair, it COULD be too small for my space or it COULD be that we have vaulted ceilings. I'm willing to come to the middle on that. But WHY is it not even cool when I'm blasting it in my face? WHY do the arms of it not stay in the window no matter how hard I try? I lost 20 lbs sweating this summer bc we didn't bother to take it out. WASTE of $ we don't have.

                            Leaked and flooded house
I purchased this AC and let it run continuously. It worked fine for just under 2 months, then flooded and ruined a section of my hardwood floors. The manual says "When there is excess water condensation inside the unit, the air conditioner stops running and shows a warning light" but this did not happen - I came home one day to it still running with a large puddle beneath it.
