A: The opening is the size of a half dollar. However, my house finches and goldfinches have not used the boxes. According to one bird book I have house finches like to nest in a cup, a cavity or even in hanging flower planters. The goldfinches prefer a cup nest. And the house sparrows I have are supposed to like nesting in a domed cup. However, many of them like nesting in my rain gutters using the corrugated metal roofing as doorways into the gutter. Maybe it is just that I placed the birdhouses near the feeding area attached to the house. It might have been better placing them in the branches of a thick tree. I don't know. I have hundreds of birds come to my feeding area. Maybe they just want a more secluded spot for their nest. But these nests are very well constructed, and they look nice next to my feeders. I advise consulting a bird book to see what kind of nests the birds prefer. I suspect the birds like to be able to see out when they are nesting. Maybe drilling an alternate entrance lower down in the door would encourage them to use the nesting box.

A: Hole size is 1.5 inches. I have 10 of these on my property and House Finches have never used one. Western Blue Birds, Tree Swallows, and House Wrens have all nested in them.
A: I do not know for sure, but since house finches are smaller than bluebirds, they should easily fit in this nest box.
A: yes for finches
A: Hi! Bluebird houses can be mounted in a couple different ways which require different hardware, so no mounting hardware is included nor are holes pre-drilled. You can see our suggestions for mounting a bluebird house on our website blog at natureswaybirds.com. Thank you!
