How is the 600lb rating established. Perhaps WingIts can provide an answer.

Answer

It is established by spreading the pressure around the sheetrock in the area. You have six prongs between the two bolts. As the bolts are tightened the prongs spread on the backside of the sheetrock. This makes the sheetrock more stable. This allows the 600lb rating.

It looks as though you can. I am holding an instruction page from inside a wingits package and it says "For 1/4" acrylic/fiberglass tub surrounds or plaster walls use 2 GBW40's" but I believe I would be reluctant.

Yes, that’s the brand that I used them with. Just make sure that you follow the instructions, otherwise some of the fastener may be exposed and the snap cover won’t cover the whole thing.

When I received the Glacier Bay 42 inch grab bar, I realized that to install it in a shower I'd need a way to find studs behind tile AND drywall. I also realized that the length of the bar meant it would have to be mounted on an angle to mount to studs. It was easier, and neater to find out where the studs were (I have a deep scanning stud finder), and mount it where the studs weren't. Home Depot sells these Wingit grab bar fasteners (two per package) that are listed as able to support 600 lbs. Now all I needed was a quality masonary drill bit to drill through tile, and a mortar base beneath. The Apache 200 3/4" bit was just right to use with these fasteners, which are fairly substantial. The anchors come with a foam gasket, sticky on both sides, that is fairly good at sealing the grab bar mounting flange from leaking water. The gasket also acts as a guide for the drill bit. I followed directions, and the mounting went very well. Just make sure you have a level handy to make sure the bar will end up level.

Best hollow wall anchors available
These anchors are the first I have ever found that can deliver exactly what they promise! Being retired from the building trades I have used most every hollow wall anchor on the market. Most can install clocks, pictures, shelves even earthquake anchors. These are the first anchors I have ever found that can actually anchor ADA grab bars. All you need to do is follow the directions for the anchors. I’ve used these now with 5/8 standard and green board drywall, tile with both thin set on drywall and tile with mastic on concrete backer board. All of these installations gave excellent results. Remember to get there Apache 3/4 drill for tile installations. These are my new earthquake anchor for TVs and heavy cabinets along with ADA grab bars!

Had never used WingIts before. The first one installed without a problem. When installing the second one, the plastic toggle part cracked while pressing the WingIt through the hole I had drilled. The fastener appears to work well otherwise.

I am a professional and install grab bars often. I have yet to install a grab bar with two holes top and bottom so the sticker template does not work for most grab bars. Because the screws are off-centered on the product, it makes it challenging to determine the exact location to drill in every installation I've done. They are strong anchors though but not user friendly and should be labeled on the package, "for use with Moen(?) brand grab bars." or whatever has screw holes top and bottom. They do sell another type that has centered screw holes and those are easier to locate where to drill but the plastic circle needs to be trimmed with a knife in order to hide it behind the grab bar plates.
