Q:Is this brush appropriate for polyurethane varnish?
by|Aug 10, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  The Wooster Pro Nylon/Poly Angle Thin Angle is our most versatile brush and can be used for a polyurethane varnish. If this is an oil based varnish, you might want to consider a natural bristle brush like the Wooster Pro White China Bristle (see internet #203246978). We do always suggest checking the coatings recommended applicator to ensure the best possible results. Wooster Customer Service is also always available to help at 800-392-7246.

A:  Kate, I am sorry to tell you this, but that brush needs to be thrown away. You will waste your time trying to clean it now. When I am painting with oil based paint or polyurethane, I usually clean the brush, then leave the brush soaking in clean paint thinner or mineral spirits overnight, if I plan on using it again the next day. If it is going to be several days, then I just throw it away and start over again with a new brush. With the quality of today's product's, it is not worth the time and trouble to try to do otherwise.

A:  Oil-based paints are exceptionally difficult to clean. It sounds like you were moving in the right direction, however, were not successful in removing all of the polyurethane from the brush. We suggest always using the paint thinner, mineral spirits or lacquer cleaner that is recommended on your coating can. Keep cleaning with the recommended solvent. Massage the solvent into the brush bristles. Change the solvent as it gets cloudy. And when you think the brush is clean, do it again. For a synthetic brush like the Wooster Pro Nylon/Polyester, we recommend following a 3-step process after cleaning with the paint thinner or solvent. First step is to rinse the brush with warm water. Next, apply a liberal amount of hand cleaner with pumice to the brush and work it in completely. Finally, rinse the brush well, until the water runs clear of all paint and hand cleaner. You may need to repeat the three step process several times to fully remove all of the coating. We offer a brochure listing these steps under the Use and Care Manual in the Info & Guides section on Home Depot Dot Com for this brush.

A:  Yes, most Wooster brushes unless they are specified for oil paint are just used for latex paint and should be cleaned with warm soapy water and then dried out. It is also a good idea to put the cover back over the brush to keep it's shape. Enjoy your Wooster brush.

A:  The store out of stock the item I requested I had to go in the store myself to get the item I ordered. Someone didn’t look on the shelf thoroughly. This was a road side pick-up but no one was outside.

A:  You did the right thing using a good amount of paint thinner to clean the brush (and make sure you use the thinner recommended on the can of polyurethane). However, it helps to use a wire brush during cleaning, to remove solids and get inside the bristles. Use a wire brush with long wire bristles. Brush the wire brush gently lengthwise along the paint brush, while using thinner. This helps clean in between the paint brush bristles and separates them. Then let it dry. Brush may still be slightly stiff, but you can squeeze, or run the wire brush over it while it's dry and it will be good as new.

A:  Poly products are very difficult to clean thoroughly out of a brush. When I apply polyurethane, I use a good quality but less expense brush and expect to throw it away when I'm done. If you have a day-after-day project, put it in a quart size freezer bag with the brush handle out, and roll it up for the next day. You must keep the air from it so it won't harden. You didn't do anything wrong

A:  I hold the brush upside down and pour a little paint thinner at a time then I squeeze the brush bristles, ring it out moving them side to side . Then when you see the brush is free of polyurethane, you wash the brush with warm soapy water. Same procedure.

A:  I had the same problem with latex paint, which cleans up with soap and water. The brush seemed to be thoroughly clean, but the next day it was stiff as a board (a "petrified brush"!). I went to the store to replace it, vowing to clean the new one even better than "clean", and bought the Wooster 2-1/2 in. Pro Chinex Angle Sash Brush which, of course, has Chinex bristles. The Chinex brush cleaned up so much easier and was supple and soft the next morning. I loved my old brushes for how they painted, but I love this new Chinex brush for how it paints AND how it cleans up!

Great brush that I use to touch up my cut-ins. I use a 2.5" angle brush for my cut-ins, but I use this 1 inch one to touch up and get those tiny spots I may have missed by the ceiling with this 1 inch brush. This brush is also great for those tight spaces when you have to cut in by window and door trims.
