Questions & Answers

Does this primer have a leveling property? I am painting baseboards with a brush, and the primer ...

Asked by Kdub May 16, 2021

I would do brush on the edges and roll the the rest. Then apply a second rolling coat getting close to the edge however, do not carry a lot on the roller. Should be good!

My home has a swamp cooler. Can I use this or would the humidity be too much for it?

Asked by DBone May 16, 2021

We use this product for the fast dry times and get adhesion for the oil base top coats. It will work for humid conditions.

is there a way to thicken primer. want to toll ceiling

Asked by teri May 3, 2021

Yes, but I suggest rolling it as is with a half inch cover. Roll the cover only part way in the roll pan so you don't overload the cover. Roll slowly and spread it out as you roll it. It is easily applied this way. To make it thicker, do not have it shaken at Home Depot and pour a couple cups out of the can before you stir it. (You can pour the excess into a metal bucket, such as an old paint can with cat litter to absorb what you are pouring out if the can) When you first open the can, check to see if the solids have settled in the can by sticking a stir stick in to the bottom of the can. It should be more thick at the bottom. Pour a couple cups out and stir. I hope this helps.

Can you use Peel and Stick Vinyl flooring on top of this primer? Will it stick?

Asked by ME April 13, 2021

Glad to help out. Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-based Primer can be used as part of a subfloor, but it should be allowed to completely dry first before installing the vinyl flooring on top. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Do you need to sand OSB flooring before applying this primer or can you use it straight on floor?

Asked by CHRISTINE April 13, 2021

Happy to help, Christine! While sanding is not required with Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer, it can be done to help smooth the surface prior to priming. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can I use this in a paint sprayer?

Asked by Meli April 13, 2021

Hi Meli, yes our Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer may be sprayed using an airless or conventional sprayer. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using spray equipment. For airless spraying, use a 0.011"-0.013” tip at 800 to 1200 psi. If a conventional sprayer is used, spray at 45-55 psi. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Is this a good option for painting over wallpaper? Will it hide the seams well?

Asked by Jessica March 29, 2021

We appreciate your interest, Jessica. While Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer can be used over wallpaper, we do recommend removing wallpaper when wanting to paint. This will ensure a smooth finish and ensure lasting results with the painted finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

best primer for laminate
This is the best primer for any laminate or fake wood job. It adhered without having to sand it first. It dried super fast. Easy to use and the consistency is very thin so it was easy to apply it. It is best used with a foam roller. The only thing was smell. But I made sure I used a mask and it didnt bother like that. I will never buy again another primer. This is the best primer i have used

Defective product ..don't waste your time
The primer on interior OSB board after 4 days dry time wiped off the board with a sponge. The primer on the ceiling is peeling and cracking , coming off by it's self . What a waste of 5 hours of sanding and prepping only to have to start over with a bigger mess then I started with. How am I going to get this crap off so I can start over. Thanks a lot. Seeing a review for the same problem last month leads me to believe that they don't care to insure they sell good products . They should have pull the bad primer and HD knew that also and yet they still sold it.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportApr 7, 2021
Let's talk about this, PJ! To ensure full durability with Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer, we do recommend applying a topcoat within 3 days of application. If a topcoat cannot be applied within that time, then the surface may need to be lightly sanded or a new coat of primer may need to be applied. If you would like further assistance with your application, please give us a call at (888) 855-1774, so we can try to make things right with you.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportFeb 9, 2021
Hi Lu, our Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer is designed for interior use, and spot priming on exterior surfaces, for sealing knots. If the primer was applied to a surface that goes through wide variance in temperatures such as an outdoor wall for instance, it will crack over time. We need to know more about the application and what occurred to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 888-855-1774, we want to try to make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

This primer will cover anything. I used it to prime my kitchen cabinets prior to painting. My cabinets were stained oak with a urethane coating. I cleaned the cabinets doors and lightly sanded with 320 grit sand prior to priming. Using the Zinsser 123 prevents the paint from chipping. It flows well and dries quickly

I had been wanting a round dinner table and my mom had one that needed some TLC. So i decided to try and give it a face lift. I was so discouraged after sanding everything and using kilz primer just to see some brownish, yellowish coffee looking stains seeping through in certain areas. I researched what i could do to fix this issue and I DID NOT want to resand the whole table again. So luckily i came across a pintrest post recommending this product stating no sanding was required. OMG! this product is amazing!! I did no new prep work to the table before adding this product and it covered those ugly looking stains with just one coat. I will never use any other primer or sealer. THIS STUFF IS AMAZING

the is my go to. I spray cabinets with bin using a gravity feed 1.4 nozzle and it goes on flawlessly, drys very fast and sticks to anything and anything to it. the only cons is it is extremely difficult to get off were you dont want it. it's to messy to brush or roll. hvlp clean up is timely.
