The StudSensor HD55 deep-scanning stud finder features an enhanced LCD display, with Target Spotlight, that illuminates on-screen when you've found the edge of a stud. Select from 2 stud scan modes to find the edges of wood and metal studs to securely anchor mirrors, shelves, and cabinets to the wall while also avoiding live AC electrical wiring.
StudScan mode locates the edges of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 in. (19 mm) D
WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded AC electrical wiring up to 2 in. (51 mm) D
Zircon recommends the use of a brand new 9-Volt battery (sold separately), check the battery expiration date upon battery installation and replace battery periodically due to the LCD power requirements
Enhanced LCD display with target spotlight indicates approaching stud edge and illuminates when stud edge is detected
Zircon's patented over-the-stud indication alerts user to start the scan in a new location if scanning begins over a stud
SpotLite pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the wall to clearly indicate the edge of the stud
Translucent base and illuminated V-marker groove for more accurate marking of stud edge location
A:Â Hello Royce. On the back of the unit there is a battery cover that opens for the installation of a 9 volt alkaline battery. The full instructions for the HD55 can be found on the Zircon website. Thank you.

Q:Will it scan on outside walls? Siding, insulation and plywood?

Answer This Question
A:Â Hello. Due to the variables in materials and construction techniques on exteriors Zircon stud sensors are recommended for interior use only. A number of our stud sensors are capable of scanning through most types of plywood and some types of siding but once again the construction techniques used with these materials can adversely affect the reliability of the tool's readings so we suggest indoor use only.

Waste of money
Unless you like your hard work to look like Swiss cheese I would stay away from this product. I never get the same reading twice and I have had about a 10% accuracy rate with it. Horrible product that I would not recommend to my worst enemy. The picture below shows all the times it said there was a stud on my brand new cabinets. Needless to say I am not impressed. Note: I measured the wall about the cabinet and did a deep scan while scanning inside the cabinet.

Hello. While our products will scan through various wood materials the thickness and density of the wood will sometimes prevent the tool from calibrating properly. This may be the reason you were getting inaccurate readings on the inside of the cabinets. Please contact our tech support through the Zircon website and will help you figure out what the problem may be. Thank you.

Surprised how well it worked
We got a couple of slings to winch our kayaks to the garage ceiling, and they obviously need to be mounted onto the joists above the dry wall ceiling. I saw this and thought I'd give it a try. Home depot had 2 different packs - same price but one included "picture hanging kit" that had a small level, pencil, hooks etc, so I opted for that. First the bad... the packaging was a clear sealed tough plastic so opening required scissors. I cut across one end of the pack and then found that the folded up instructions were now cut through too. Why can't they print "cut here" on it, so you can avoid chopping up the instructions?
Now the good... I read what was left of the instructions, put in the battery (not included) and tested on a wall. Hold the button, wait for the beep, move across wall. Stud detected. Move further - another stud, move more, another stud. I measured the distance between them and it was 16 inches (standard stud spacing). Looked promising. Weekend arrived and I started mapping out the garage ceiling for the kayaks. Worked the same, with hits spaced at 16 inches. Mapped out some more to double check, then drilled holes. Every single one hit a stud! Didn't expect that!

Accuracy questionable
I tried this stud sensor vs another brand and results shows it detects but too early from the nearest edge of the stud which confuses me. The other brand detects by showing 3 lights showing the middle light is the stud center which is far easy and accurate.

No power at all
I bought this one few years ago it worked okay. But today I tried to use it, it didn’t work at all. I replaced battery but no power at all. It should not be useful only one time.

Its a paper weight.
I went in looking for a Milwaukee stud finder like my old one that got damged and found only whatever this brand is and ryobi. Bought this went home opened it up and put in a brand new battery. Does literally nothing. Put it on a wall and pressed the button. Not a sound or a light or anything. Junk. Why does home depot do this. Get rid of everything that works and replace it with junk. I will only be returning to home depot to get my money back and shopping elsewhere from now on.

Solid stud finder that gets the job done
After researching different stud finder options, this Zircon HD55 Stud Finder seemed like a good compromise of value and effectiveness. When it starts to detect a stud behind the wall, the bars on the screen will increase in number, ending with a high pitch noise and red light when the edge of the stud is found. Sure enough, after marking the wall and drilling, the stud finder had accurately detected a stud. I've had mixed results with the DeepScan sensor, but the StudScan option works great.

Easily finds stud
Ensures you're drilling in the middle of the stud. The arrow projection helps a lot

Crap Stud Finder
This thing doesn't work. Even asked the maintenance man for help using this stud finder. At every indication of a stud, we drilled and found nothing. I now have a ruined wall and no frames hung!

Hello, We’re sorry to hear of your experience with the HD55 StudSensor. There are tried and true techniques we can help you with that will promote consistent scanning results. Quite often these issues have to do with the environment you’re operating on and knowing why the tool is reacting to density changes that may not be the studs (or objects) you’re looking for or problems with false readings or no readings at all like you described. Regardless of the issue, we would like to do everything possible to resolve the problem for you. Please contact us through the Zircon website. Thank you.
