Product Overview

The StudSensor HD70 OneStep stud finder takes the guesswork out of finding the stud center. Its two scanning modes locate the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs. It is ideal for use on non-textured walls, drywall, wood flooring, or subflooring. Two scanning modes include StudScan Mode that works up to 0.75 in. deep, while DeepScan Mode doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 in. deep for increased accuracy on deeper targets, such as fire walls, and floor and ceiling joists. A bright Backlit LCD Display and Target Spotlight illuminate when stud center is found. The HD70 also indicates the presence of live, unshielded AC electrical wiring for safety. For optimum performance, replace the 9V battery when the unit specifies.
  • StudScan Mode locates the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 in. (19 mm) deep
  • DeepScan mode doubles the scanning depth to 1-1/2 in. (38 mm)
  • WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded AC electrical wiring up to 2 in. (50 mm) Deep
  • ACT (Auto Correcting technology) automatically corrects common errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud
  • Backlit LCD display with Target Spotlight indicates the direction and edge of the stud and illuminates to indicate the stud center location
  • SpotLite pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the wall to clearly indicate the stud center
  • Signal strength indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets
  • Translucent base and illuminated "V" marker groove allow for more accurate marking of stud locations
  • Zircon recommends the use of a brand new 9V battery (not included); check the battery expiration date upon installation and replace as needed to power the LCD display
  • Great solution for your stud detection needs

Will it find studs behind tile? I want to mount grab bars in a shower.

Hello. Scanning through tile can be problematic depending on the type of tile and the construction techniques used in the particular bathroom. If the construction behind the tile contains certain types of insulation, has dense backing or irregular thickness, normal stud scanning or deep scanning may not be effective or reliable. Zircon® recommends you use a scanning tool with metal scan capabilities like the HD800. Using the HD800 in metal scan mode you can scan and map the nails that hold the backing for the tile to the studs. Check out Zircon’s website for detailed instructions on lath and plaster stud finding technique. This technique is the same for finding studs behind tile. Thank you

Can it find a stud behind wall tile in a bathroom?

Good question, so I took my stud finder into the bathroom to try it. I have the Zircon HD70 and have used it for several years around the house. I found that over the tile it wouldn't find a single stud, but it did find where the studs were doubled up, like the outside corner of the wall. I had no luck with it for the single studs. This was a test on sheetrock with tile and not fiber backer board.

I have textured drywall walls, will this product be able to accurately scan for studs?

It'll get you close, but it isn't perfect. If you stay in the center, you should be alright.

Had this for a while but now it’s not working? What do I do?

I haven't specifically done that installation but the deep scan feature should work for that.

can you use stud finder on exterior walls through stucco

I had trouble through thick sheetrock texture. I would be highly surprised if it worked through stucco but can't say for sure.

Great For Finding 3" PVC Pipe
Let's just say I wasn't too thrilled that I drilled a 3/16" hole right through a sewage drain line. It'll find studs too, but use caution that it is only detecting density and does not know if a "stud" is actually a stud or not.

Hello. We are sorry you accidentally drilled into your sewage drain line. It is always a good idea to map out the wall you are planning on drilling into. Making sure the studs are reading 16" on center, they are 1 1/2" wide, they are floor to ceiling etc. Our web site has answers to any questions you may have and we have a tech support number you can call 800-245-9265 mon-fri, 8am-5pm PST. Thank you. zircon

Wow great Sensor!!!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We got this Zircon-Studsensor HD70 Onestep, because we wanted to do some Home Improvements and needed to find the wood studs in our wall. This Stud sensor is amazing, it is so easy to use, its very precise in finding the studs and the light (sensor) is nice and bright. it sensors live electric wiring in wood or metal studs. and with the V marker its easy to mark the spot.

Convenient stud finder with extra features!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Zircon Studsensor HD70 is a handy device. It is lightweight and the power button is in a convenient place. The display is bright and lights up nicely. It emits a loud sound when the center of the stud is found. A nice feature is the icon to let you know when it detects live wires. It worked on drywall but was a little inconsistent. I found that when scanning it didn't detect any stud and when I moved it up a few inches over the same area it finally picked up the stud. This was in a newly remodeled room and I know that there was nothing behind the wall that could interfere. As noted in the instructions it may have trouble locating studs in a high textured area and on plaster. I did find that it couldn't pick up the stud on the plaster very well. Sometimes it would start to sense the edge of the stud and then it would go blank. Overall this device is handy for simple use such as needing to hang home decor but I would recommend that a person check both above and below the area when searching and coming up with no stud and you know one should be close.

Works Great with Some Great Features!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been wanting a stud sensor for awhile now, because my walls are so thin that I have a hard time with things falling off the wall if they're not nailed into a stud. So I'm really glad I got this! And it is a really nice stud sensor. It not only finds the stud, but it's got a wire warning, which is really awesome. It's got backlighting/illumination, which is also nice. And there's a notch at the top of the device to help you mark the middle of the stud once it's detected. It slides easily along the wall and is super easy to use. I really like it a lot and can't wait until I have something new to hang! I'd definitely recommend it.

Great product, very efficient
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My life has forever been changed with this Zircon-Studsensor HD70 Onestep tool. In the past I was guilty of piercing multiple unnecessary wholes in my walls in hope of finding a stud. I then invested in a no name finder and was unimpressed; I received missing markings etc. With my Zircon stud finder, it comes equipped with a light up reading panel on it’s face for speed and accuracy; it notifies you when there is electricity nearby and the leveling tool is a much need accessory for precision. I have since hung several pieces on my walls have were in storage because I needed the right tools for the job. I am beyond a satisfied consumer, this finder has revolutionized my hanging methods.

A great tool to have
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this Stud sensor. I used it to install my climbing hang board. If you need to install something on the wall that is heavy, you need this sensor. It is user friendly. It only has one key and by moving it around it will find the center. One good feature is alarming the AC wire which can help to avoid electrocution.

This is a vast improvement over early Zircon sensors, which I've used for many years. The new backlit display and target spotlight are clear and give enough info for the average DIY homeowner at an excellent price. It's more accurate and shows both wood and metal stud edges and center. There is a hot wire warning display.

Absolutely worthless. I realized it wasn't working after I drilled the second pilot hole with no stud in sight. I ended up having to just play a guessing game until I located it myself (3 inches over from where it said it was). Don't waste your money.

Hello Eric. We’re sorry to hear of your experience with the HD70 StudSensor, and that we couldn’t have helped you at the time. There are tried and true techniques we can help you with that will promote consistent scanning results. Quite often these issues have to do with the environment you’re operating on and knowing why the tool is reacting to density changes that may not be the studs (or objects) you’re looking for. Regardless of the issue, we will do everything possible to resolve the problem for you. Please contact us. We offer toll free support by phone (800 245 9265) during normal business hours Mon. thru Fri. 8:00am to 5:00pm PST.
