I concluded the M1 is more than capable for finding studs and metal in studs. My understanding is that the the M2 gives you additional capability to scan through multiple layers, the M3 scans through different materials, and the M4 scans for unshielded electrical wires. Depends on what you need.
Hi. Chip board or composite board is a very consistent material, much the same as drywall. Our scanners will penetrate it, so yes, they will work on it. If the chip board has paneling or some other material layered on it; it can sometimes cause issues. But, all in all it's a compatible surface for stud finders.
