Product Overview

Featuring new, revolutionary Target Control Level 1 Technology. The Zircon SuperScan M1 advanced stud finder is tuned to find clean, wood studs while filtering out metallic false positive objects, such as plumbing, conduit, straps, brackets or ducts, hidden behind surfaces. The LoLevel Indicator signals to the presence of dangerous, deep and less dense false positive targets, reducing the chance of accidentally drilling into objects such as plastic pipes. The SuperScan M1 offers 2 distinct detection modes - TC and StudScan. The ColorTrip Display conveniently details information. The screen will illuminate blue in TC mode and indicate the center, edges and direction of wood studs while also enabling the user to identify safe-to-drill zones by utilizing the new 'Trust but Verify' technique. When TC mode is off, the tool will perform in StudScan mode indicating the center, edges and direction of both wood and metal studs. The Target Spotlight illuminates on screen and the SpotLite Pointer shines on the surface being scanned when the center of a stud is found.
  • New target control mode locates the center, edges and direction of wood studs and not metal, up to 3/4 in. D (19 mm) behind surfaces, identifies safe-to-drill zones between adjacent drywall screws, nails and protector plates
  • StudScan mode locates center, edges and direction of wood and metal studs up to 3/4 in. D (19 mm)
  • WireWarning detection continuously alerts to the presence of live, unshielded AC wires up to 2 in. D (50 mm)
  • LoLevel indicator displays low (weak) signal objects, such as plastic water pipes, while in TC mode
  • Signal strength indicator helps distinguish between shallow and deep targets while in studs can mode
  • ACT (Auto Correcting Technology) automatically corrects common errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud
  • Low battery indicator for optimum performance (9-Volt battery required, not included)
  • Target spotlight illuminates on screen when stud center is detected
  • ColorTrip display illuminates blue in TC mode
  • Spotlite pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the scanned surface to indicate the center of a stud
  • V marker groove enables accurate marking of stud location

I concluded the M1 is more than capable for finding studs and metal in studs. My understanding is that the the M2 gives you additional capability to scan through multiple layers, the M3 scans through different materials, and the M4 scans for unshielded electrical wires. Depends on what you need.

Hi. Chip board or composite board is a very consistent material, much the same as drywall. Our scanners will penetrate it, so yes, they will work on it. If the chip board has paneling or some other material layered on it; it can sometimes cause issues. But, all in all it's a compatible surface for stud finders. This stud finder works really well. My house has metal studs and 1/2" drywall, so I had to use StudScan mode for my project. Stud and edge detection works great - the results matched up with known stud locations in other areas of the house. Similarly, the electrical wiring correctly detected wiring in the walls. I really like the fact that it accurately detects the center of the stud as now I only have to mark one point instead of measuring where the center should be. My biggest complaint is that the display's backlight turns off StudScan mode is enabled, making it a little harder to see. In TC mode the display's backlight is blue. Wish it would just show an indicator or something instead of just turning off completely. Thankfully it still lights up red when a stud is detected. One other super trivial thing that irks me is that the beep the unit emits is unnecessarily loud.

The Zircon Superscan M1 Stud Finder is designed to locate studs behind drywall without damaging the surface of the wall. Using the tool is simple, hold the tool against the wall and slide the tool slowly horizontally across the wall. When the center of a stud is detected, a red triangle is projected on the wall showing the center position of the stud. The tool is designed to filter out false indications from metal objects like straps or pipes. It takes longer to get used to after using a standard stud finder, but it seems to eliminate false positives very well. After locating a stud I confirm the location by driving a nail at the indicated and at points to either side.

This scanner works well when you are in the right mode and trying to find studs in the exact environment it was designed for. There are two modes, Target Control mode and Studscan mode. I have found that the Target Control mode rarely works. I was about to give up on this stud finder but then I tried the second mode, Studscan mode. In this mode I was able to find studs just fine. It is quick and pretty accurate when in this mode. However, this scanner only works if you are looking for studs behind regular sheetrock that is no thicker than 3/4". This stud finder is definitely limited in what it can do, but with what it can do, it does it well.

Hi. Thank you for your detailed review of the SuperScan M1 advanced wall scanner. The M1 is designed to scan through ½” or 5’8” standard interior drywall surfaces. To help clarify, Target Control offers the ability to find wood studs, and not metal, while also being alerted to low signal false positive objects such as plumbing, conduit, straps, brackets, or plastic water pipes. When in TC mode, if you find that the signal is continually filtered out due to scanning over metal drywall screws, nails, and protector plates, we recommend toggling to StudScan mode to find a stud first. After finding a stud, toggle back to TC mode to utilize the Trust but Verify technique by running to the tool vertically, up and down a stud to help identify “safe-to-drill” zones and the pattern between adjacent drywall screws, nails, and protector plates. This on/off pattern will also give a better indication of whether the object detected in StudScan mode is a wood stud and not a pipe. Paying particular attention to the new LoLevel Indicator is key. The cascading LoLevel Indicator will flash if it detects objects recessed within the wall, such as the PVC pipes or conduit. We’d love to walk you through how TC works and help answer any questions or concerns you may have. We have a great team of stud finder experts standing by, ready to help. I have to admit I was a little intimated when I first saw the complexity of the display for the Zircon SuperScan M1 Stud Finder. I went to the vendor's website and found a video which really helped since I wasn't about to read the instructions. I am working on a basement and I'm clueless what the previous owner did down there. I really like that this stud finder shows you hot wires and other unknowns behind the drywall in addition to the actual wood studs

Thank you for your review of the SuperScan M1. We’re happy to hear it's doing the job for you and that the how-to video was helpful. The WireWarning Detection feature you refer to is a safety feature designed to warn you when you are scanning in close proximity to live, unshielded AC lines behind your walls and to drill with caution. It is not designed to pinpoint their exact location. Please visit the Zircon website for our customer service contact information if you ever have any questions or comments. Great little stud finder. Unit works great and has two functions which you NEED to read about to figure out. It can either detect only studs or both studs and other junk in the wall. If you just hold down he button and and start scanning it will work just fine. It appears to be highly accurate and this being the case you have to scan a little slower than you might think but its really bang on and highly accurate and perhaps that is the reason for the slow speed. The little arrow on the top is pretty handy too. It projects an arrow on the wall so you know exactly where the stud should be.

I have used multiple "cheap" stud finders. There is nothing like drilling a screw or hammering a nail expecting to find wood and find nothing but sheetrock. I selected this tool because of all the technology involved with it. I was amazed right from the start with the accuracy and dependability of the stud finder. I was used to the old ones and had to adjust my movement methods to get good results. After a very short learning curve, I was able to find every stud without mistakes. I love this product!!

Zircon M-1 Superscan Stud finder. I received this with an additional fact sheet with in-depth instructions. This was in addition to the instructions that came in the packaging. OK, why do they need to include another, very detailed instruction sheet?? Warning flag up. I watched the video and read all instructions. I live in a 1890’s house. It has a combination of Sheetrock and plaster. The plaster does not have wire mesh. I had very mixed results. It would not located any studs on the plaster walls. The Sheetrock walls were hit and miss. When the detector did find a stud, the signal was not strong. In the video they provide it shows a strong red light signal when you hit the center of the stud. I could never get this signal. I wish I could recommend this product but with the results I had, I cannot.

Hi. We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the M1 advanced stud finder. Zircon stud finders without Metal Scan mode are not recommended for lath and plaster wall construction. As stated on the packaging and instructions, the M1 is optimized for ½” or 5/8” drywall surfaces only. This particular SuperScan M1 model will not detect studs behind drywall surfaces deeper that ¾”. We can recommend another Zircon tool that will scan through your plaster/sheetrock walls. Please contact us directly. We’re here to help. Ordered the Zircon Superscan M1 stud finder to replace an aging unit that I use to locate studs behind drywall to hang heavy pictures and shelves. The M1 unit has more than enough capability for these purposes. The M1 operates in two modes. The Target Control (TC) mode finds wood studs and filters out metal readings that sometimes give false readings. The StudScan mode finds both wood and metal studs, and metal in wood studs, providing additional information to locate the right spot to drill. LoLevel and Signal Strength indicators on the display help identify the presence of plastic pipes, extra thick walls, or various other situations which is very helpful. It also has a live electrical wire warning indicator to avoid drilling into electrical cables. The unit operates the same as my old stud finder. In TC mode hold the unit steady, press the power button, wait for it to calibrate, and scan for studs. Operation is the same in StudScan mode except you hold the power button down twice. The large LED display identifies the edges of the stud, puts a cross hair on the center, and shines a laser on the wall with an arrow indicating the center of the stud. Clearly written instructions are provided that describe each of these procedures. The sophistication and capability of this unit compared to my old stud finder is incredible. I highly recommend it for these purposes.

Great little beginner friendly stud finder. I was a little intimidated at first when I got this, but they were smart to provide a QR code you can use your phone camera to pull up a link with videos and instructions(they also come with them, but I like videos more). I used this thing on textured and non-textured surfaces in areas I knew were studs and electric were. It worked great. There’s different modes but essentially, I prefer the blue backlight mode. It has all sorts of indicators that once you learn can provide excellent feedback. Take the time to learn this and you’ll enjoy it! Just don’t expect this to fit easily into your tool bag. That’s my only complaint.

This stud finder worked great. I was very impress. I verified its accuracy by locating studs that I found before (i.e., see photos). It found them effortlessly. Previously when I used a stud finder, which I have purchased a few of them, I always wound up using my trusted nail and hammer. Those finders where terrible and I did not and do not trust them. You can see from the photos how this one did in finding my previous drill holes. It is a quality piece and comes with a Duracell 9v battery and not some no name brand battery. This stud finder is inexpensive, performed flawlessly and I highly recommend. You won’t regret it.
