Product Overview

Featuring new, revolutionary Target Control Level 1 Technology. The Zircon SuperScan M2 advanced stud finder is tuned to find clean, wood studs while filtering out metallic false positive objects, such as plumbing, conduit, straps, brackets or ducts, hiding behind surfaces. The LoLevel and MetalliWarning Indicators alert to the presence of dangerous, deep, less dense false positives and metal targets, reducing the chance of accidentally drilling into a piece of metal or plastic pipe. with the addition of Zircon's proprietary DeepScan mode, users can increase scanning power when necessary, making for a more robust and multi-functional tool. he SuperScan M2 offers 3 distinct detection modes - TC, StudScan and DeepScan. A 2-mode switch makes it easy to toggle between functions, while the ColorTrip Display conveniently details information. The screen illuminates pale blue in TC mode and locates the center, edges and direction of wood studs, while also enabling the user to identify safe-to-drill zones by utilizing the new 'Trust but Verify' technique. When TC mode is off, the tool will perform in StudScan mode indicating the center, edges and direction of both wood and metal studs. DeepScan mode doubles the scanning depth to reach deeper targets beneath extra layers of drywall or paneling. The Target Spotlight illuminates on screen when the center of a stud is found and SpotLite Pointer shines on the scanned surface.
  • New target control mode locates the center, edges and direction of wood studs and not metal, up to 3/4 in. D (19 mm) behind surfaces, identifies safe-to-drill zones between adjacent drywall screws, nails and protector plates
  • StudScan mode locates center, edges and direction of wood and metal studs up to 3/4 in. D (19 mm)
  • Deep scan mode doubles the scan depth of wood and metal studs up to 1-1/2 in. D (38 mm)
  • WireWarning detection alerts to live, unshielded AC wires up to 2 in. D (50 mm)
  • LoLevel indicator displays low (weak) signal objects, such as plastic water pipes while in TC mode
  • Signal strength indicator helps distinguish between shallow and deep targets while in studs can and deepscan modes
  • MetalliWarning indicator turns on when metal objects are detected in all modes
  • ACT (Auto Correcting Technology) automatically corrects common errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud
  • Low battery indicator for optimum performance (9-Volt battery required, not included)
  • Target spotlight illuminates on screen when stud center is detected
  • ColorTrip display illuminates pale blue in TC mode, green in DeepScan mode and red to alert the presence of live AC electricity
  • SpotLite pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the scanned surface to indicate the center of a stud
  • V marker groove enables accurate marking of stud location

I've depended on a Zircon Stud Finder for years and have given several as gifts. This M2 version offers a number of improvements that made it easier to use and more reliable in terms of finding a safe place to drive a nail or screw into an elusive wooden stud. Among the improvements are a "Center locater" that finds the approximate center point of studs, and a means to avoid the drywall screws that are already there! The M-series of stud finders features "Target Control...tuned to find wood studs while filtering out (rejecting) metallic or low signal false positive objects, such as plumbing counduit, straps, brackets, or plastic water pipes." (Quoted text from the user manual.) In practice, this feature missed known studs as well, and I found it more useful to turn it off -- at least while completing a companion scan. The metal warning worked a bit too well in that it also detected the large metal picture frame hung on the back side of the wall. Voltage detection worked well for line voltage (which turned the display illumination red), but did not detect low voltage wires such as those for phone, computer network, speakers, or alarm system. A "Deep Scan" mode increases sensitivity and sets the default screen illumination to green. Blue lighting goes with the "Target Control" mode. There was a bit of a learning curve with this stud finder, and it actually required reading the instructions to understand the meanings of the various icons and display colors, and the non-intuitive means of disabling the "Target Control" feature. It's also been a long-running gripe of mine that this comparatively expensive tool comes without a battery, so be aware you'll need to pick up one of those as well. (Full disclosure: Zircon DID provide a 9-volt battery with my evaluation unit, but those for sale are packaged without.) The manufacturer also backs this product with a limited lifetime warranty of up to 20 years, and my experience to date suggests that this will be a reliable addition to any toolbox.

Hi. Thank you for your honest review and suggestions for the Super Scan M2. We always appreciate feedback from our customers. We realize there is a slight learning curve involved when initially using the M2 which is why we always recommend customers start by reviewing the included instructions and brochure to get familiar with the additional modes and features. Regarding your comments on the Target Control scanning mode; when beginning your scan in TC mode, it’s best to place the scanner flat against the wall, then hold down the power button and allow the tool to calibrate for 1-2 seconds before slowly scanning the surface. If you find the tool isn’t auto-calibrating correctly, move the tool off the stud and restart your scan. Also, make sure you do not place your other hand on the tool or on the wall during calibration and scanning. In addition to instructions we also offer a detailed how-to video and a knowledgeable technical support team to help you with techniques we know will produce consistent scanning results. Please feel free to contact us directly to let us help you troubleshoot the environment you’re working in/on. This is a good Superscan M2 advanced stud finder with 3 scanning modes for finding wood studs behind walls. As a handyman and diyer I found to unit to be accurate when finding wood studs. This unit takes a little time to understand the instructions and doing some testing to figure out the different modes. I used this in remodeling the kids bath to locate studs and pipes behind the wall in order to attach the tub surround. And it work well. I wish this would have come with a carry case or something to protect it in the toolbox/bag. 9v battery is included.

This Zircon M2 stud finder arrived at just the right time. I am remodeling on a couple different jobs and needed to know the precise locations of joists so I could cut drywall to install a duct, and also studs so I could fish some wiring and install cabinets. Like all stud finders, some knowledge of the wall construction is ironically needed to determine if you are getting correct readings. Initially, with one project I was having a problem finding studs until I realized that the walls were constructed with a 1-inch layer of foam insulation between the stud and the drywall. This made the studs too deep for the normal settings and I needed to rely on a deep scan setting. Since the drywall was 5/8 thick, this was also at the limit of what this instrument could scan, but with a bit of time and patience, I was able to determine the stud spacing and locations. Finding the location of the joists was a snap and I found both edges and centers quickly. There is a big learning curve with this piece of equipment. There are two settings: One called “target control” (TC), and the other called “deep scan” and they operate differently. Additionally, there are two modes for the target control setting, the second being StudScan which again operates differently. At least a couple of complete and thorough readings of the instructions will be needed, and probably a viewing of the video (location found by the QR code on the back of the instrument), as well as some field time to get used to the operation. This is certainly different that any other stud finder that I have use. Additional information that it provides are live wire alerts, metal alerts and some information as to possible water pipes, although I found that to be less specific and reliable. A couple of downsides to this device: It is large. Forget about carrying it in your tool bag, since it takes more room than two large tape measures. You must have a fresh 9 volt alkaline battery. This is mentioned several times, so I think that it operates best with one and poorly with an older battery. This really means that you probably need two, especially if you are doing extensive readings, just in case one starts to fade out. There is no indicator as to which setting you are on between TC and StudScan, and I found that I was one when I thought that I was on the other (you switch between them with a double click of the power button). After you are familiar with the tool this will be apparent, but for a beginning user it is confusing. And finally, it would have been nice it there was a protective case of some kind to keep it from getting banged around with the rest of the tools in the bucket.

Response from Zircon Customer ServiceMay 4, 2021
Hi. Thank you for your detailed review of the SuperScan M2 advanced stud finder. We appreciate your feedback about the size of the tool and your suggestion regarding a protective case. Wewill keep your comments in mind for future designs. We agree that reading the instructions is key to better understanding the tool’s functionality. To help clarify, there are three scanning modes; TC, StudScan, and DeepScan. TC and StudScan use the same switch setting but function differently. StudScan detects both wood and metal studs, while TC detects only wood studs and ignores metal. You can distinguish between the two modes by the pale blue backlight on the LCD when in TC mode. The LCD is not backlit in StudScan mode. When set at the TC mode switch position, double click the Power Button to toggle to StudScan mode as you stated. If you store the tool for long periods of time, we recommend removing the battery prior. Please feel free to contact us directly with any concerns or questions. We’re here to help. This stud finder provides a lot of information, though the multiple modes can get a bit confusing. The part I liked best was the more traditional stud finding, where it helps you identify the centerpoint of the stud, projecting a red arrow at the point so you can mark it, and also showing where the edges are. It can also detect metal, such as sheetrock screws, helping you see where it is safe to nail. It will also warn against live electrical wires, turning the display red and flashing a warning. Even better, it can detect things such as plastic pipes, though the indication of that can be a bit confusing. My testing showed that it was accurate in locating studs, screws and live wires. The "low level" signals for things such as plastic pipe were harder to interpret. My only gripe is that the sensor is physically large - bigger than any other stud sensor I have used.

Hi Steve. Thank you for your review and purchase of the SuperScan M2. We appreciate your feedback about the size of the tool and will keep your comment in mind for future designs. We always recommend users first thorougly read the instructions and quick start brochure to get familiarlized with the tool’s functionality. As you pointed out, the M2 can alert the detection of plastic pipes but paying particular attention to the LoLevel Indicator while in TC mode and the Signal Strength Indicator while in StudScan mode is important. The LoLevel Inidcator will display rapidly cascading bars when the device senses a sustained weak signal, indicating a false positive object (such as a plastic pipe) may be present. The Signal Strength Indicator (uses the same icon as the LoLevel Indicator) will display full signal strength bars when a false positive object is detected.Zircon customer support is available for any questions, concerns, and comments you may have regarding the operation and care of your tool. Zircon SuperScan M2 Stud Finder - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review I’ve come a long way since my...
Zircon SuperScan M2 Stud Finder - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review I’ve come a long way since my first stud finder – a magnet on a string and several iterations of electronic ones. This Zircon Superscan M2 Stud Finder may be my last. It tells me everything I need and more. There are three modes to operate the M2. There’s the StudScan mode which is pretty basic finding the edges and centers of studs. In this mode some metal objects may show as a stud. There’s the TC (Target Control) mode which finds studs and identifies metal objects like nails and straps. The final mode is DeepScan which does everything TC mode does but measure in about 1.5” instead of .75”. In all three modes hot, unshielded AC wire is identified. This may save you the exciting experience of drilling into live wiring. The color of the LCD screen and icons on the screen indicate the mode you’re in. Sliding the M2 down the wall finds the edge of the stud with a line for which side. Moving further ends up showing both edges and the center with an audible indication that you’ve found center. There’s a bright red arrow projected on to the wall indicating center. It’s pretty hard NOT to know you’ve found center. When near live AC wiring the LCD flashes red and throws up a warning icon. Once again it pretty hard NOT to know you’re near the wiring. A disclaimer from me and also in the documentation – DON’T ASSUME THAT EVERYTHING DETECTED IS A STUD. Also – THE LACK OF A LIVE AC WIRING WARNING DOESN’T MEAN THERE’S NO WIRING PRESENT! There are lots of on-screen indicators, lights, sounds etc. to let you know what you’re finding. Most of them are pretty easy to figure out but I thoroughly intend to keep the documentation close in case it gives me information I can’t understand. In use I found the M2 to be very accurate. I did not see any indication of false positives in areas of m home I’m very familiar with. I also found it easy and intuitive to use. I was immediately able to find studs without reading the documentation. The documentation gives the information you need for the additional features and capabilities. As a DIY homeowner I don’t have very many opportunities to use stud finder but it happens. This Zircon SuperScan M2 Stud Finder has far more than enough capabilities for my needs. I should never need to buy another one. Here’s the manufacturer’s product website if you’re interested. https://www.zircon.com/tools/superscan-m2/

Thank you for your review of the SuperScan M2 advanced stud finder. We’re so happy to hear the tool is meeting your expectations and finding your studs with accuracy. To clarify, TC mode finds wood studs and cancels out metallic objects you’ll want to avoid drilling into. The MetalliWarning Indicator, which is on in all modes, will flash to alert you that metal is present and to drill with caution. DeepScan mode functions similarly to StudScan mode in that the tool will detect both wood and metal studs. This unit is pure genius. You can set a normal or deep scan and avoid wiring and actually hit the studs. I’ve already used it a number of times to hang some heavy pictures and a tv wall mount. It found the stud easily. My favorite part is how it looks and operates. It beeps and shows you a clear line right to the stud. It also shuts itself off automatically.

ZIRCON SUPERSCAN M2 STUD FINDER. This seems to be a good product. It has deep scan, which is great for going over drywall with paneling under it. It comes with a nine volt battery. I have never had a stud finder that actually worked good on my house. This one is comfortable to hold. You do need to make you calibrate this one. It's easy to work with.

Zircon made the "Stud Sensor" the most popular DIY tool for finding pipes and studs in walls. I've had my old grey one for years and this new addition adds many features with improved sensing capabilities. One of the greatest features in my estimation is the addition of a marker light. When you are on a stud, a led light shines indicating the exact location. Also a bar graph show the beginning and the end of the sensing scan. Like the old one, this new version is right on. I tested it on a true plaster wall almost 1.25 inches thick and found it reliable.

Hi John. Thank you for your review of the SuperScan M2 advanced stud finder. We’re so happy to hear the scanner is meeting your expectations and finding your studs with accuracy. Please be aware, the M2 is not recommended for lath & plaster wall construction. You mentioned you have “true plaster” walls. If you mean a plaster cap (on drywall), that should be OK, but true lath & plaster construction may present problems due to the inconsistent density and nature of the application. Works great
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This has been a great tool for myself. We live in an old farmhouse so it is hard to know what is behind our walls. This stud finder has been really easy to use and help me be able to hang my wall decor. It is very easy to use. You put it flat against the wall and push and hold on button and slide along wall until an arrow shows. There is also alerts letting you know if wires are present.
