Product Overview

Featuring new, revolutionary Target Control Level 1 Technology. The Zircon SuperScan M3 advanced wall scanner is tuned to find clean, wood studs while filtering out metallic false positive objects, such as plumbing, conduit, straps, brackets or ducts, hiding behind surfaces. The LoLevel and MetalliWarning Indicators alert to the presence of dangerous, deep, less dense false positives and metal targets, reducing the chance of accidentally drilling into a piece of metal or plastic pipe. with the addition of Metal Scan mode, users can interactively narrow and map metal in walls, making for a more robust and multi-functional tool. The SuperScan M3 offers 4 distinct detection modes - TC, StudScan, DeepScan and Metal Scan. A 3-mode switch makes it easy to toggle between functions, while the ColorTrip Display conveniently details information. The screen will illuminate pale blue in TC mode and indicate the center, edges and direction of wood studs, while enabling the user to identify 'safe-to-drill' zones by utilizing the new Trust but Verify technique. When TC mode is off, the tool will perform in StudScan mode indicating both wood and metal studs. DeepScan mode doubles the scanning depth to find wood and metal studs beneath extra layers of drywall or paneling. A dedicated Metal Scan mode helps users detect ferrous metal, such as rebar and non-ferrous metal, such as copper.
  • New target control mode locates the center, edges and direction of wood studs and not metal, up to 3/4 in. D (19 mm) behind surfaces, identifies safe-to-drill zones between adjacent drywall screws, nails and protector plates
  • StudScan mode locates center, edges and direction of wood and metal studs up to 3/4 in. D (19 mm)
  • Deep scan mode doubles the scan depth of wood and metal studs up to 1-1/2 in. D (38 mm)
  • Metal scan mode locates ferrous metal up to 3 in. D (75 mm) and non-ferrous metal up to 1-1/2 in. D (38 mm)
  • WireWarning detection alerts to live, unshielded AC wires up to 2 in. D (50 mm)
  • LoLevel indicator displays low (weak) signal objects, such as plastic water pipes, while in TC mode
  • Signal strength indicator helps distinguish between shallow and deep targets while in studs can and deepscan modes
  • MetalliWarning indicator turns on when metal is detected in TC, studs can and DeepScan modes
  • ACT (Auto Correcting Technology) automatically corrects common errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud
  • Low battery indicator for optimum performance (9-Volt battery required, not included)
  • Target spotlight illuminates on screen when target is detected
  • ColorTrip display illuminates pale blue in TC mode, green in DeepScan mode, blue in metal scan mode and red to alert to the presence of live AC electricity
  • Spotlite pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the scanned surface to indicate the target location
  • V marker groove enables accurate marking of target location

We want to install safety grab bars in our shower. Will this find the studs behind ceramic tile?

I tried mine on a ceramic tile wall in our bathroom and it did find studs on 16" centers. To verify, I sensed the same wall from the other side by checking the closet wall on the other side of the bathroom wall.

It's amazing how far electronic stud finders have evolved since the previous century when I purchased my first sensor. See the photo of my first Zircon "Studsensor Pro" along side my new sensor, a Zircon "Superscan M3". There is a world of difference. There are 4 models of the Superscan, M1-M4. Each higher numbered product offers additional features, so I would recommend reviewing the features of all four units prior to purchasing to be sure you buy the one that matches your needs. I tested the M3 on walls where I already knew what was behind the sheetrock, and the Superscan M3 did a really good job at detecting the exact center of a "clean" standard 2x4, a stud with an electrical wire stapled to it's side, an HVAC duct, and electrical wires alone. I can say using this sensor will raise your confidence level that what you've located is actually a real stud. See the photos of the display sensing the various conditions. Be sure to read and understand the rather lengthy instruction sheet in order to benefit from all it's features. It appears rather complicated at first, but experimenting with the unit again while reviewing the instructions a second time will be worth your effort. This unit even has a proper hinged battery compartment door, and takes a standard 9 volt battery. I also like that the unit projects a red arrow on the wall indicating the exact location of the stud's center. The product is engineered and designed in the USA and is assembled in Mexico. I recently used it to find studs for mounting an over-the-range microwave oven, and it made the job quick and easy. I think it's safe to retire my old sensor!

This is an upgrade to the average stud finder. It works about as well as an average stud finder at finding studs. The arrow that lights up when it's at the center of a stud is a nice feature. It indicates the presence of metal or live wires. It does that in a vague way. It's a fairly ordinary tool and works fairly well doing what someone, a DIY homeowner like me needs it to do. I have sought a really great stud finder and would be willing to pay a lot for it. This one isn't great. It's good enough. I used it to hang a coat rack and it did the job. It comes in a blister pack that needs to be cut open. I slit it just enough to get the tool out so I can slide it back in so it's protected when not being used. If you need a stud finder this is as good as any other I've used. I'm still looking for that great one.

Hi. Thanks for your review of the SuperScan M3. We appreciate your feedback and we’re happy to hear it’s working well for you. The M3 features the all-new Target Control (TC) technology, LoLevel Indicator, MetalliWarning Indicator, and ColorTrip multi-color display.. What makes it unique to other stud finders is that TC offers the ability to find wood studs, and not metal, while also being alerted to low signal false positive objects such as plumbing, conduit, straps, brackets, or plastic water pipes. The LoLevel Indicator icon, in TC mode, shows on-screen when the tool scans over these low (weak) signal objects or studs deeper than ¾” (19 mm). The MetalliWarning indicator will display when metal is detected or dangerously close in TC, StudScan, and DeepScan modes. The WireWarning Detection feature you refer to is a safety feature designed to warn you when you are scanning near live, unshielded AC lines behind your walls and to drill with caution. It is not designed to pinpoint their exact location. If you would like to know more about Target Control technology, we’re here to help. This device is great for finding studs behind various types of walls. It is a bit large and this makes it harder to maneuver in tight spaces. It will find recessed studs that are behind the normal studs. It can also pick out plastic or metal pipes, screws & nails as well as other obstructions in the walls surface. Batteries are included in the package.

Too precise? Perfection is good, right? If something is perfect, there’s no chance of mistakes....
Too precise? Perfection is good, right? If something is perfect, there’s no chance of mistakes. With Zircon’s “SuperScan M3 Stud Finder” you will only find perfect studs, free of nails, screws, metal nailing plates, wires and plumbing. The “Target Control” feature zeros in on the center of that “clean” stud and projects a bright red arrow on the wall. Now you know you have a safe place to nail or drill. But as the saying goes, “Perfection is the enemy of good enough”. “Target Control” mode is picky. It rejected significant portions of a stud I knew to be “clean”, probably due to things nearby. I tested it on a wall in my basement that was finished on one side, open on the other so I could easily determine where wiring would be a risk. Once the M3 got within several inches of the wiring it began flashing red, and continued to do so even when moved away from the wiring. It also found metal “in the wall”, when it was actually some aluminum lawn furniture hanging ON the unfinished, opposite side of the wall. If you’re a novice or just can’t afford to make a mistake, this greatly increases your chances of success. But if you’re used to “old fashioned” ways of locating a stud (magnets, tapping for solid sections, measuring for 16”-on-center studs, or tapping tiny nails into the wallboard), you might find this a bit slow and frustrating. To be fair, that’s where the second mode, “StudScan”, comes in. It’s designed to find studs regardless of dangers, similar to a more basic device. It still warns you of wires and metals, but identifies the stud anyway. Just read the instructions thoroughly and practice - there’s a lot more going on with the M3 than with your average electronic stud finder! Model # 71435

Hi. Thank you for your detailed review of the SuperScan M3 advanced wall scanner. We appreciate your feedback and are happy to know that the M3 works to your satisfaction. We agree that reading the instructions is key to better understanding the tool’s functionality. When scanning in Target Control mode, the tool will filter out metallic objects (behind the wall) that you need to avoid by flashing the MetalliWarning icon to alert to the presence of metal. To verify you’ve found a wood stud, slide the tool vertically, up and down the stud to locate the safe-to-drill zones between metal drywall screws or nails. If preferred, switch to StudScan mode for the traditional functionality you are used to. For scanning accuracy and consistency, always hold the scanner with your thumb and forefingers while keeping your other hand away from the scanner and the wall. Please feel free to contact us directly with any concerns or questions. We’re here to help. The Zircon Superscan M3 Stud Finder is a great tool for finding wood studs and metal stud, pipes or electrical conduit or non shielded wires. I have used a few other brands but I really like the led indicators that are clear and easy to read especially since I wear reading glasses, but for this tool I did not need to. I tested it on a wall that I know where the studs and electrical cables are and it detected it spot on. I am able to grip it well for a person with a large hand. Excellent tool for the DYI'er or the Pro.

From the product description this seems like it will cover a lot of ground in finding studs and hidden metal objects behind walls. And, I think it will do most of that, but it is very heavy which makes holding the button and reading the screen awkward. There's lots of info on the screen so one's hand, thumb, and your head have to be relatively close to make it all work. The literature looks good, but doesn't hang together... are there three operating modes, or four, for example. I suppose I'll drag it out from time to time to see if makes more sense. It won't make it in my general tool bag for now.

Hi Charlie. We sorry to hear about your experience with the SuperScan M3 advanced wall scanner. We appreciate your feedback about the weight of the tool and will keep it in mind for future designs. To clarify what is stated in the instructions, the M3 has a 3-mode (position) switch for switching between TC, DeepScan, and Metal Scan modes. However, there are actually four different operating modes, which additionally includes StudScan mode, accessed by pressing the Power Button twice while in the TC mode switch position. Pressing the Power button twice in the TC switch position will enable you to toggle between the TC and StudScan modes. Please feel free to contact us. We’re here to help. I’ve owned a lot of stud finders but this is for sure the nicest one I have owned. It’s a decent sized item, and it has a big LCD screen with big indicators so it’s definitely easy to see and read. The display changes color depending on what mode you are in and even alerts you to areas where there is electricity. I scanned this near my fuse box and it picked it up no problem. I have metal studs in my house, but it had no problem detecting them and gives you the indication on where the edges and center are. It seems to be very accurate and overall seems like a great stud finder, even though I probably won’t use all the features. It has a spot in my toolbox now! The only downside I found is it uses a 9V battery. Those have gotten expensive and a set of AA would be much preferred.

I am so happy to get this ZIRCON SUPERSCAN M3 STUD FINDER! I often struggle with finding the wooden studs when I need to hang pictures or art work, and many times I end up with several test pilot holes before I locate the stud... I have had other stud finders before but they never seem to work very well. It needs a 9V Alkaline battery (which was included in mine). This Zircon works great! And when it finds the center of the wood stud it has a really bright arrow that lights up on the wall to indicate the center of the stud for you and a high pitched beep. I wish I'd had this stud finder years ago as it would have saved me much time and aggravation! It also has a directions pamphlet with it to aid you in learning how to use it. Very straightforward instructions and a toll-free number to call with questions or issues. They make it fairly "dummy" proof to locate a wood stud!

I'm planning to install a medicine cabinet above the sink in one of our bathrooms so I wanted the latest hi-tech stud finder. Drilling and nailing into walls is very stressful, which is why I appreciate the M3 Superscan’s Target Control (TC) mode. TC mode provides a bit more assurance that I won’t be drilling into electrical wiring, plates, or even drywall screws. Beyond that, I find this tool frustrating. And while it is helpful at times, the results can be as ambiguous as those I get with my older Zircon i520 “Multi-Scanner.” Also, I'm not sure why, but the M3's instructions can contradict themselves. For example, TC mode starts with, “Do not touch surface during calibration or scan” (written in bold), after which it says to begin by “holding the scanner flat against the wall and pressing the button to calibrate.” Why the contradiction? Furthermore, scanning the QR code on the tool for help brings up a webpage with the manual and an animated video of how awesome and hi-tech the M series is. What would be helpful is a video of someone using the M3 on a closed wall after which the wall is opened and results surveyed for accuracy. I called tech support but unfortunately no techs were available at 1:20 PST on a Tuesday. The tool has a learning curve and is not intuitive. Unless you use it all the time, you'll be referring to the instructions. All the trademarked buzzwords don’t help either. There is a 3 mode switch, yet 4 detection modes (Target ControlⓇ, StudScanⓇ,DeepScanⓇ, and Metal Scan). OK, no big deal; however, icons in the display have multiple meanings depending on the mode selected. For example, the three bars, aka LoLevelⓇ indicator, means weak signal objects (potential false positive) in TC mode, but is the Signal Strength Indicator in other modes. While I like that the M3 is slightly more ergonomic than older models, it still has that little calibration button on the side that has to be kept pressed. I can’t tell you how many times my thumb slips off the button and then I have to start again. I wish Zircon would just add a power On/Off switch and a press-and-release button to calibrate after which you begin scanning without holding down a button. It would make it possible to switch hands when in an awkward position (or my arm gets tired). I’d also like to see a silent mode because the beeps are ear piercing. After 5 minutes I’m begging for ear plugs. Anyway, this tool is modestly helpful, but it needs improvement. If my i520 didn’t develop a faulty switch, I would have stuck with it. I used all 4 modes on the M3 and came to 4 slightly different conclusions. Is it accurate? It's hard to tell because I'm still knocking on walls, tracing wires with a tracer, removing moldings, taking off switch covers, and using various other tricks for discovery.

Response from Zircon Customer ServiceMar 31, 2021
Hi. We’re sorry to hear your experience with the SuperScan M3 advanced wall scanner, and that we were not immediately available to assist you at the time. We did call you back, but we’d still like to help you with scanning techniques that will give you greater confidence to correctly identify your studs. It’s true that Target Control (TC) technology helps you avoid drilling into unwanted objects in your walls so you can target clean wood studs. “Do not touch surface during calibration or scan.” The instructions are advising to keep your free hand off the wall and away from the scanner during the scanning process. This is to ensure the tool is calibrated correctly on the wall and is a critical process with any Zircon stud finder. Hold the tool in one hand with your thumb and forefinger. If your free hand is too close to the tool’s sensor, it can easily throw off calibration which could explain the trouble you described with getting inconsistent results. We have many helpful SuperScan videos that help explain the best techniques for consistent and reliable stud scanning results which can be found on our YouTube channel, ZirconTV. Once you become familiar with the icons, the tool can really help you have confidence you are finding clean wooden studs, while avoiding wires and pipes within your wall. The Power Button will not latch on because the scanner uses a good deal of battery current while under power. Also, you need to re-calibrate often while mapping out a wall for studs. Achieving clean calibration is critical for reliable operation. Every time you perform a scan, your need to re-calibrate the tool. We’re happy to hear you found the M3 to be helpful in finding studs. We can help you become an expert using the M3. We have a team of stud scanning experts on hand to help you. Please feel free to contact us again when you’re available. Please visit the Zircon website for contact info. Thank you. zircon

This stud finder is amazingly accurate and lights up red, when you are dead on.  On the LCD screen it also has multiple marks on each side of center that helps to tell you where dead center is and whether you are a little to the left or to the right.  I must admit that this is a little advanced for my construction know-how but I know a carpenter who is pretty impressed with the extra capabilities.
