Hi JP! This is our older ecobee Room Sensor. I recommend you check out our all-new ecobee SmartSensor 2-pack. Learn more: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ecobee-SmartSensor-2-Pack-EB-RSHM2PK-01/309221992

I have an Ecobee4 but it didnt come with a room sensor. What is the model number of the sensor that works with the Ecobee4?

Asked by Kathy February 17, 2019

Ecobee only makes one sensor model, and it works with all of their products. (i.e. Ecobee 3, 3lite, 4)

The image shows that stands are included. Is this correct? Are the stands included?

Asked by Robin December 15, 2018

Yes. The stands are included. They also have sticky pads with them to stick them to the wall, and you can take them off without ruining the stickiness to replace the batteries.

I would put sensors in the worst rooms, then in the app you can configure “sensor participation” under comfort settings. You can disable the thermostat itself from participating in temperature monitoring. It would still control the equipment, but will do it based on the other remote sensors only. Probably don’t need sensors in all four rooms. I have this same type setup with two thermostats, two HVAC, and use 2 remote sensors in bedrooms on opposite sides of the house to control the temperature. My thermostats are in hallways as well.

I like it cold - year round-others do not. Can keep 1 room a walk in freezer while not freezing rest of house?

Asked by Vkirkmir July 5, 2018

No. This allows you to average the temperatures across multiple rooms / sensors. To make one room colder than others requires a redesign of the HVAC system or supplemental cooling in one room.

Can the sensor be used outdoors?

Asked by Joedirt January 7, 2018

I don’t think they are waterproof to install outdoors. I have not tried either.

What is the range / distance. I want to monitor the temperature at our trailer 150 miles away.

Asked by Jh61 December 12, 2017

Must be within 45' of your Ecobee Thermostat.

Do they detect humidity or just temperature?

Asked by CW December 7, 2017

Both humidity and temperature. I do not try to regulate humidity with my system however.

What is the standard operating temperature these units are tested to? Seeing if I can put one in ...

Asked by Tim January 3, 2017

Operating Temperature: 0 ̊C to 40 ̊C

What battery do you use?

The room sensors are a great addition to a Ecobee 3 or 4 Thermostat. I now have 4 in my house (each of the bedrooms and the office). I've had the first 3 for almost a year and just added the 4th. With the thermostat on one end of the house in the hall and the bedrooms and office on the other side (we have sprawling ranch) we can now maintain even temperature throughout. The low battery feature on each sensor is enunciated both on the Ecobee Thermostat and the app. Sensor placement is somewhat important. If you put them too far away from the Thermostat or obstruct them with other objects, they can loose communication with the Ecobee. This too is reported. The good news is the system will automatically try to and re-establish the communication link. The best part is you can focus the HVAC system to use one of the sensors for primary on/off action (like a bedroom at night to stay warm) or ignore a sensor if a room isn't in use. Look at it from this perspective, it must have been a good idea because Nest copied it and now has remote sensors on their Thermostat!

Great add-on product
It's awesome that you can bring every room into the "smart" ecosystem without spending and arm and a leg.

Good when it works but one sensor keeps losing signal no more where it’s placed and it’s sitting between to routers. The temperature calibration was off when sitting next to a thermometer, moved further away from the main ecobee seemed to allow it to better read the room temps.

Great addition to Ecobee with one catch
These little sensors are really what set the Ecobee3 apart from the competition. The main unit comes with 1 additional sensor, but the more you add the better it is. Best features: insane battery life. I have some other home automation stuff and expect to replace the batteries once a year. On these remote sensors, Ecobee states you should get almost 4 years per battery. Awesome! Needs improving: the range is not the best. With a centrally located thermostat I occasionally get "dropped sensors" notices in my 2,000 sqft house. It doesn't happen often enough to prevent it from working properly (maybe once every month, lasts about 5 minutes).

Good afternoon heisenberg and thank you for your feedback. Could you please get in touch with me and let me know which firmware version is on your ecobee3 at the moment? We have made improvements to the sensor connectivity with the latest firmware update and I want to make sure you're on the latest firmware. From there we can see if the sensors still continue to drop and troubleshoot further.

Looking forward to hearing from you: mu@ecobee.com. ecobee

Best Smart Thermostat
I've been using my Ecobee for about 3 years. I first had the Nest which works fine but like most thermostats, it reads temperature usually in a hallway which isn't representative of the rest of the house, though I do like the routine learning functionality of the Nest. The Ecobee does all the regular stuff like know when your not home to use the a/c less, and know when your on your way home to get to your desired temp, etc... But when you use the Ecobee "follow me" feature with the room sensors, it's a game-changer. With this feature, it prioritizes the temperatures of the rooms that you're actually using over rooms that are empty or you temporarily pass through. You can even choose which sensors in which rooms you want the Ecobee to use for different times of the day by adjusting your temperature comfort settings. I had the nest for 2 years and after switching to my Ecobee, I actually saw a decrease in a/c usage ( but not comfort) once I had enough sensors and had my comfort settings optimized.

Poor battery life
Battery only lasted about 3 months and are very expensive if you can find a quality replacement. A lot of junk batteries on Amazon. Benefit of additional sensor is partially nullified by expense of batteries.

Save your Money
I’ve have this system for 5 years now. The thermostat works as intended but the sensors are a waste of money. When my kids are sleeping the sensors don't pick the room up as occupied. Thus only averaging the temp of the main thermostat with the 3 sensors. Problem is that the temp downstairs is far lower and doesn’t hit the average threshold to signal the AC to kick on. Seriously don't waste your money.

Thanks for your feedback about ecobee SmartSensor. Good news, you can customize your sensor participation in each Comfort Setting. For your Sleep Comfort Setting, you can exclude the SmartSensor downstairs to ensure you get a comfortable sleep. The Follow Me feature does not work in the Sleep Comfort Setting.
