The ecobee thermostat clearly detects temperature, but does it also detect occupancy like the room sensor? In other words, if I'm trying to determine how many room sensors I'll need, do I need to get a room sensor for the same room as where the ecobee thermostat would be installed or will it double also as a occupancy sensor? E.g. if the ecobee thermostat is to be installed in the living room and I want occupancy sensing for a bedroom, office and living room (same room as thermostat), would I need 2 or three room sensors? Thanks in advance!
Asked by: Researching
The thermostat itself is a sensor. So you will not need a sensor in the room where the thermostat is.

it says the C wire is required what is the C wire?
Asked by: rjkjmk
"C" wire is a wire that goes from the thermostat back to the furnace. "C" refers to "Common", & the thermostat needs that wire for power to run the electronics in the stat (wifi, settings etc) General Tstat color coding goes like this, Red = voltage 24v Green = Fan White = Heat Yellow = AC more stages require more wires & colors assoiated with the operation of the furnace >> your mileage may vary :) <<

I have a single unit, dual zone house. Can I purchase one ecobee with alexa for the main floor and put a regular ecobee upstairs, and how well would they work together? Thanks!
Asked by: mdlestmsg
We have a single unit, dual zone home. I have ecobee4 on my main floor with sensor in the Bed room & a regular thermostat on the lower level. It works just fine. Ecobee4 controls the main floor heat/cooling & can turn on/off the HVAC. To set the lower level, we manually change the non-smart thermostat to the temperature we want.

Can this unit be set to automatically notify you if the hvac system fails or the temp falls below a certain point like freezing?
Asked by: LB
I have it set to alarm me if the humidity falls below 40 humidity. As far as other points go. But as far as getting below a certain temperature, I don't think so. Then again this is what support website says: You can have peace of mind about remembering filter changes, furnace maintenance or servicing your system, because your ecobee4 has you covered. Reminders let you know if you need to service your heating and cooling system and when to perform periodic maintenance. Alerts let you know if your heating and cooling equipment isn’t performing as it should. To view your Reminders and Alerts on your thermostat or mobile app, select Reminders & Alerts from the Main Menu. On the web portal, select the Reminders & Alerts tile. How to configure Reminders & Alerts You can view and configure your Reminders and Alerts on your thermostat or mobile app by selecting Reminders & Alerts from the Main Menu or on the web portal under the Reminders & Alerts tile. Here are the different Reminders and Alerts you can enable, disable and configure on your thermostat, mobile app, or from the web portal by selecting Preferences: HVAC Service: The HVAC Service (maintenance) reminder generates an alert telling when regularly scheduled maintenance is required. This alert, along with technician contact information can be displayed on the screen and viewed in the web portal. We will send a reminder to the email you provided upon registration. You can set the Last Service date, turn the Reminder On or Off, and to set the Frequency of the maintenance interval in months. Furnace Filter: This will create an alert for cleaning or changing your furnace filter. You can set the Last Filter Change date, turn the Reminder On or Off, and set the Frequency of the maintenance interval. UV Lamp: Create a reminder for cleaning or replacing your system’s UV lamp. You can set the Last Lamp Change date, turn the Reminder On or Off, and set the Frequency of the maintenance interval. Low Temp Alert: To prevent home damage due to freezing you can set a Low Temperature Alert. The low temperature range can be from 35 to 68 °F (1.5 to 20 °C). High Temp Alert: To prevent home damage due to excessive heat you can set a High Temperature Alert. The high temperature range can be from 60 to 104 °F (15.5 to 40 °C). Aux Heat Runtime Alert: Sets the amount of time that the Auxiliary heat source, if installed, can run continuously before an alert is generated. Aux Outdoor Temp Alert: If you have a heat pump with an auxiliary heat configuration, you can configure your ecobee4 to generate an alert if the auxiliary heat is called for when the outdoor temperature exceeds this programmed set point. Low/High Humidity Alert: Sets the percentage of relative humidity at which your ecobee4 will generate a Low/High Humidity Alert. Lost Communication with Sensor/Low Battery Alert: Receive an alert when the wireless remote sensor battery is low or communication with the sensor is lost. Display Alerts on Thermostat: Select ‘No’ if you do not want any of the alerts to be displayed on your thermostat screen. Alerts will continue to be displayed on the web portal and sent via email. Enable Heating/Cooling Alerts: Select ‘No’ to disable alerts for heat/cool error conditions. If disabled, alerts indicating that the system failed to heat or cool will not be appear in the screen, web portal, or emails. You have to understand how hvac systems work. When heating, they're blowing air out at ~150f. they don't blow heat out at whatever you set your thermostat to. Generally, they'll heat your home via this 150f air to a degree or two above what you set, kick off, then resume as the temp begins to drop. If they allowed what you propose, and you set your system to heat and cool at 70f, the heat would push it up to 72, then the ac would cool it down to 68, then the heat would kick in and push it up to 72, then the ac would kick in and knock it down to 68.. you get the idea. That's extremely bad for your hvac system and i doubt there's a thermostat made that would allow it to happen. This is exactly why ecobee requires a small gap between heat and cool points when in auto mode.

ecobee4 7-Day Smart Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat with Room Sensor and Built-In Alexa Voice Service is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 219.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from best thermostat so far I received a $60 rebate from FPL and at first I was debating if I should replace it with my nest. After struggling with not being able to control my nest eith siri I decided to get this one. The installation was very simple. Replaced my nest with this in 30 mins. This also cones with a Kit if you dont have a C wire which makes it the best. This is also best as you can control it with alexa and siri both. The sensor works great as I put it in my room and not worry about cooling the entire house. This is a best thermostat in my opinion. Must buy.

My system consists of 2 heat pumps, a 5 ton and a 3 ton for a 4500 sq ft 3 story home. My normal utility bill is normally between $275-$300 in the winter. I receive a weekly text message from my utility company giving me my use for the week as well as the anticipated end of month bill total. After installing these thermostats after the first week I was notified that my normal utility use had doubled. I couldn’t understand how that could be. I logged into the ecobee website and looked at the usage report. It showed that my heat pumps were operating in emergency mode only using the heat strips for heat and not running the outdoor compressors at all. I called technical support and was informed from the factory these thermostats have a safety setting that does not operate the heat pump compressor under 35 degrees outside temp. It knows the outside temp because it is connected to the Internet and has its location. Why would they have this safety feature? My regular thermostat didn’t know the outside temperature. It runs as it’s supposed to until it cant keep up and then it kicks on the heat strips. Not just use the heat strips for regular heat. After numerous phone calls and emails back and forth with Ecobees technical support and making numerous changes to the settings, the system was still running the heat strips when it should be running the heat pumps first. After a month of use my utility bill came back at $598!!! I removed these smart thermostats and reinstalled my old thermostats and my system, is back to running as it did previously. I requested a refund through Ecobee due to these issues and the skyrocketing utility bill. Ecobee’s answer was sorry, its past our 30 day money back guarantee. Do not waste your money on this product. Sadly I have bought numerous “smart” items for our house trying to cut our energy consumption and this “stupid” thermostat only cost me what I paid for it in extra utility usage!!

It seems as though the thermostat space that was pioneered by Nest has become a bit crowded. I think Ecobee has carved out a spot for itself though with its simple to use features and ability to forget that it's there. Too many smart products require too much maintenance that they're no longer fixing an issue. Though the room sensor is a nice touch, it doesn't really fix the issue of hot and cold rooms. If one room runs hotter or colder than others, all this will do is make the room with the sensor match the thermostat, but the other rooms with now have the opposite issue. Smart vent pairing would be the ideal fix.

I had zero intention of getting a "smart" thermostat but when my old one died on a cold Saturday morning a few weeks ago, I ran to Home Depot and, frankly, got this one because it matched the footprint of my old Edge thermostat and I didn't want to patch the wallcovering. What a pleasant surprise. I love having Alexa integrated into the thermostat. I love that I just touch it for the full weather forecast. The thermostat adjusts itself when we're not home or retire for the night. No complex programming. Setup was super easy. So, even though this was an emergency purchase, it's a product I highly recommend and would definitely buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Buy Another til You Check This Out After installing another brand of a WiFi controlled thermostat a couple of years ago, I just installed this one. It is light years ahead of the old one; from ease of installation and set-up, to the built in Alexa voice service. When I first removed the old thermostat and saw the wiring, I thought there is no way that I can do this myself. However, after contacting Ecobee customer service, the person who answered was so knowledgeable that I was amazed. After talking me through a couple of things, he immediately emailed some information with very good instruction. It then took all of 7 minutes to change some wiring at the furnace and install the new Ecobee4. I remember contacting the company from the old thermostat for wiring help, and all I got from him was that I need to call the installer. This guy was smart. The set-up steps that appeared on the thermostat were very good, including when to download the Ecobee app on my iPhone, how to set up the Alexa voice service linking it to my Amazon account, etc. Alexa is awesome on this. If we are cool, I can just talk in a normal voice from my sofa in the living room to the Ecobee in the hallway and ask her to change the temp……again, AWESOME. I can’t leave out the jokes that Alexa tells when I ask for one, or the weather report, and the list goes on. The additional room sensor is amazing also. I have it set up to know when I am in a room and for it to keep that room a certain temperature. I will be ordering more of these. Definitely look at this before you buy anything else. It works with other smart home devices as well. One more tip of my cap to the customer service person at Ecobee.

The step by step instructions made it impossible to misunderstand. It is easy to use with on screen instructions and I love that I can control it from my smart phone. I had contractors come to my home when I was at work to install windows and I was able to turn off my heater from work to save $ on my heating bill. The extra room sensor is very handy when I have a fire burning in the room with the main sensor, the other sensor still keeps the rest of the house warm by not turning off the heater.

Smarter than its competitors (Lyric, Nest, etc.) the Ecobee 4 balances your whole home, not just the temp in the hallway with its remote room sensors. It has changed the comfort and consequently increased the happiness of our home for the better. No more worrying about the temp in the kids rooms. With this thermostat we can prioritize their rooms or just let them be averaged in with all of the other readings from different locations in the home. Set up is guided by the thermostat itself and so simple and that anyone can install one and have all over comfort for their home in just 30 minutes! Don't pass this one by, because it really is the whole package and a new, better way to make comfort and savings as a priority in your home.

The integration with HomeKit was the deciding factor for me buying the Ecobee over the competition. I use Siri to control the Ecobee on my Apple devices such as my iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. Alexa being built in was an added bonus. I use Alexa to set timers while I cook. The Ecobee is also able to link to my Hue bulbs, so I can use the sensors on the thermostat and the room sensors to have the lights turn on/off when we enter/leave rooms. One of the coolest integrations is having IFTTT link to both so that when the timer is done on the Ecobee, the lights in the house will blink to alert me. This is useful for when I'm cooking and leave the room. Ecobee4 also had an accessory terminal so I could have it control the humidifier on my furnace. I love this device.
