Q:Is the middle panel really thin, such as quarter-inch plywood or MDF? If so, is it too thin to mount anything on it with screws without having them stick out the other sides and does it reduce soundproofness?

Answer This Question

A: The MDF panels in this door are 0.36-in. (9.1 millimeters) thick. If attaching something to them with screws, you may use extra short bolts with decorative cap nuts to make it less conspicuous while adding some character to it (this should not affect soundproofing). STC for this door is between 23 and 27, which can be improved with the addition of a door sweep to the door bottom. A: Replacing the panel would require cutting the wood that holds it inside the rails and stiles, fitting in the glass and re-attaching the wood back on top. The primer used on the door would not take latex...

The primer used on the door would not take latex paint. After a few attempts at latex paint application, I had to sand the entire door to remove the lumps of congealed paint and primer and apply oil paint. The words “ use oil based paint only” would’ve saved me a days worth of head scratching and sanding. The doors themselves,sans primer,aren’t bad.
