A: We used wood screws (I thought they came with the sliders-?) and have a plywood shelf attached. It was been rolling bathroom baskets in and out of a cubby for over a year now. Very sturdy.

A: it depends on if the sides of the cabinet are flush or not
1.if the insides are flush just use 1/2" or 5/8" wood screws
2. if the insides are concave from the face frame you need to build a 2" back board 1/4" wider than the drawer opening- attach the boots to the ends- flush put the slides in the boots and attach the front of the slides to the face frame
then push the 2" board to the back wall -level it- square it straight and nail it to the back wall

Q:Is there any way to defeat the soft close mechanism without removing the slides? The drawer I installed these on doesn't have a pull and I don't want one there but having the soft close mechanism makes the drawer too hard to open without having a pull on it.

A: The overall thickness of the slide assembly is 1/2". I try to leave an extra 1/32" on the total drawer width if I am building the drawers from scratch. The slides seem to work smoother that way.
