A:  1" is the specs on the label but larger will be easier to complete cut if you take it off after cutting gets hard to finish and reposition blade to back of opening should help make it eaier to complete cut. you need to experiment cutting larger limbs which is not good for the tool. not recommended use a larger lopper or saw it off better.

A:  I know because sometimes I try to do the impossible and FORCE something beyond its capacity that it is not advisable for your own benefit or the tool's! If you want to make your tool act like a Beever rather doing what is designed for... sure go ahead and try! What you need is a Fiskars ratchet loppers. The one I have used (and abused) is 27" from tip of anvil to tip of handle. I use it with this concept in mind: Use the biggest tool possible to make the cut then if well within range of an easy cut you may go down to a lesser tool! Nobody is going to call you a wimp if you use a 2" capacity loppers to cut a 1/4" branch!!! Certainly not the other way around.You will avoid a lot of pain and frustration!
