Q:How well does this take a stained finish. I would like to match it to a large built-in for my office that has an oak surface stained with provincial minwax.

A: Unless you are storing it in a very humid environment, you should have at least a couple days to work with it before you need to worry. Also, if you are working with oil-based stain and polyeurethane, the stain itself should stabilize the wood. If you are using water-based, the dry time on the stain should be rapid enough that you can apply the poly the next day.

Q:I would like to use this for my cnc router to make 3d art. Is this a bad idea? Would there be glue/sap issues when milling this? Thanks

A: 25" is good for a writing desk; 30" for a computer desk where the monitor and keyboard will be on the desktop. I'm installing a 25" piece 4' long under a window with a piano hinge attached to a 4' length of 1/2 screwed to the wall and painted.

A: Trim - You can always talk to someone at the Home Depot Pro Desk and see if they are willing to cut the butcher block down to size, but I think most store may not do it. It is quite easy for an experiences DIYer to cut it down to size. ~ Hardwood Reflections
