Q:Could you attach these with suction cups to an outside window or are they too heavy?
by|Apr 19, 2021

Answer This Question

A:  Would not recommend it. Pretty heavy for suction cups and if birds are going to nest in it you want it to be anchored safely.

A:  Won't work. Way way too heavy. Needs to be attached securely to a tree or something similar.

A:  Yes it's made in the USA.

A:  I think so. Issue isn’t where it’s made as much as how it’s made - kinda clunky and difficult for small kids to assemble (worked on this with my 6 ur old daughter).

            Answer This Question

A:  I used a tack hammer to drive in the finish nails that were included in the kit. If you have a nail set you can use it to counter sink the nail heads if you want to stain or paint the bird house.

A:  A hammer is necessary. To make it easier for young kids I pre-drilled some kits but it's not required.

A:  Just hammer and a screwdriver.

A:  It has been a few years since my scouts made these. I believe you need a small hammer and sanding paper. It is a very basic kit. My scouts were in 3rd or 4th grade when they built the bird houses.

                    Answer This Question

A:  If you want to paint them, lightly sandpaper the rough edges first. Use paint appropriate for the conditions where it will hang. Other than that nothing else is needed.

A:  You don't need this but I found it helpful. A needle nose pliers or tack hammer to hold the nails to set them in place before finishing setting the nails flush with the wood. I also suggest painting the bird house helps preserve the wood and adds color to the outdoors.

                      by|Feb 11, 2020

A:  The tools listed are sufficient for this build. You can use a battery operated screwdriver but not necessary. You will have to provide stain or paint for the project. If you paint, make sure you use a wood primer first then your paint. It you stain, I suggest using a wood conditioner to enhance even staining and preventing dark spots.

A:  Those were the only tools we needed. Just a tip: you may want to use some long needle-nose pliers to hold the little nails. We do that so the kids don't mash our fingers while they hammer in the nails! I do recommend wearing safety glasses too!

A:  I do not remember how long they took. the kit is difficult for children to do, nails are too long and split out the wood. I feel the design with the large open slots in each side are not good for the winter climate I live in (upstate nY). The previous kits we made at the after school program were made for us by my father, these kits did need to be supervised but the success rate was much grater. I would not buy these kits for a group to do, even if you did them with 1:1 attention.

A:  If you have moderate skills this should take about 1/2 hour. If you will be doing this with the help of children allow more time.

A:  A very dumb bird - it’s not safe as the gap between the side walls and the roof is very large. Enough for a bird of prey or small mammal to reach in and eat the eggs or hatchlings.

A:  Given the size of the birdhouse and the entry/exit hole, it would be a small bird. In California, we have humming birds in them. I hope that helps.
