A:  Hi Angie, this is Sarah with Kohler Co. I am glad to address your concerns and further explain crazing. Crazing is caused by tensile stresses greater than the glaze is able to withstand. A craze pattern can develop at any time in the lavatory’s life. Causes that are most often related to the development of crazing include: size of the piece, temperature changes, humidity changes, vibration (as in moving the piece often), and the age of the piece. Crazing occurs in the manufacture of vitreous china products regardless of manufacturer. Very specific efforts have been made to reduce the frequency of crazing occurrence. A:  Hi Jackie, this is Sarah with Kohler Customer Service. I am glad to address your question. The different materials are used due to detailing on the sinks. A sink made of fireclay can be used to create intricate designs and shapes. Vitreous is used in most cases which do not require intricacy and unique shaping. Fireclay is made from dense clay that is heated and cured. The clay holds its shape through the firing process to maintain the details. Vitreous china is made from a clay base that is coated with a glaze and then fired at an intense heat to fuse the clay and glaze. Thank you for choosing Kohler.

A:  Fireclay is a higher quality and more durable material. It is processed at a much higher temperature than vitreous china.

A:  Both are high quality. Fireclay is thought to be slightly more durable but is available in fewer colors and is not typically used in products with intricate designs (better suited to vitreous china).  There are several reviews and comparisons of these two materials on the internet and the Kohler website offers a good explanation.

A:  I simply removed the old pedestal sink and installed the new one. There was no need for cut outs. The old sink was a Burgundy Kohler sink which I loved but my wife said need updating!

A:  Our plumber set up this sink in an apartment flush against a Sheetrock wall and used caulk to “glue” the sink top to the Sheetrock. He also recently did this again for a sink top on a vanity base. It was so sturdy that when I had to unfortunately remove the sink to repair the floor, it was very difficult to do…my point is that bathroom caulk can be used as a glue instead when the sink top is flush with the wall

A:  Hi, this is Laura with Kohler Co. I am happy to assist you with your question. The drain is usually included with the faucet. A plumber can easily change the faucet and drain for you. Thank you for choosing Kohler.

A:  Yes, it doesn’t come with a drain stopper. That was included with the faucet. The only tools required were a crescent wrench to connect the water lines and a slip joint pliers to tighten the drain nut.

A:  The sink unit fits close to the wall and could allow for the addition of a tile backsplash to the wall. A single length of solid backsplash material with any depth less than 1/2” could also be used. Please note that due to the ceramic nature of the sink, the horizontal edge is not without some deviations, but grout or silicone could seal the spaces for visual and waterproofing needs.
