Q:Can I use this product if I have aluminum wiring
by|Mar 9, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  Al, NO -this outlet is NOT designed for aluminum wiring- it is for use on up to #10 copper wiring. For aluminum wiring you need an outlet with a CO/ALR (copper/aluminum revised) rating. Home Depot does sell other outlets with CO/ALR rating. The link below is one of several CO/ALR outlets that they do sell - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-15-Amp-Duplex-CO-ALR-Outlet-White-12650-W/100357043 I am not an electrician but have done a lot of wiring. Personally if my home had aluminum wiring I would hire a licensed electrician to do any work on it. The big problem is not the wire itself- the problems arise generally out of the connections. They have to be done correctly and can cause a fire if not properly connected.

A:  Hi Al No this device is not for aluminum wiring, been years the last time I even had a service call for aluminum wiring the only recept I can think of is Leviton 15 Amp Duplex CO/ALR Outlet, White Model # 12650-W, you might just check around for others but MUST be labeled CO/ALR for you are looking for wiring and fire problems. And you would be wise to have a licensed electrician do the work

Q:Question to Leviton. Can you confirm that it is actually self-grounding outlet? Home Depot spec says it is, but as I do not see copper contact plate for the mounting screw, I doubt it.

Answer This Question

A:  "Technically" via unscrewing the grounding screw to max and having it touch the metal receptacle box and the receptacle at the same time if your residence is wired with metal conduit and that is what is used for grounding instead of a dedicated ground wire. In reality to follow NEC code, you really should use a grounding wire which runs from this outlet back to your panel.

A:  No it is not a GFCI outlet.

    by|Sep 21, 2019

A:  No, this is not a gfci outlet. The rectangular face is a "Decora" style as opposed to the regular duplex outlet that is very common. Functionally, it is the same - will accomodate two plugs and is designed for a standard 15A circuit. It will fit in the same faceplate as a GFCI, but offers no electrical protection from ground-fault conditions.

A:  This is not a GFCI outlet just a Child proof tamper resistant outlet

        by|Nov 12, 2019

A:  No it is not a gfi receptacle, it is a decora type receptacle outlet.

          A:  This is not GFCI.

A:  It is not a GFCI.

            by|Sep 20, 2019

A:  This is NOT a GFCI outlet. It is a regular outlet with tamper-resistant shutters (code required now). It is a "decora" shape, meaning it fits in a rectangle cover just like most GFCI outlets. GFCI outlets will be easily distinguishable with the "TEST/RESET" buttons on the front. The front of these outlets is a glossy and smooth white face that matches nicely to screwless plates.

                  Answer This Question

A:  This means that the plastic parts are ultrasonically welded together, which implies a more consistent product. Ultrasonic welding results in a stronger bond between two pieces of plastic if performed correctly.

A:  "Ultrasonic" refers to the process of welding plastic components in manufacturing. This differs from components that may be press fit or clamped.

A:  This means that the individual components of the outlet are heat welded using an ultrasonic vibration causing the plastic parts to melt together for a permanent assembly. The parts not connected with screws or snaps. Ultrasound is better construction!!

A:  There are special considerations when dealing with aluminum wire. Being that you’re asking... please call a professional licensed electrician. And make sure the person who comes to your house is over 40 years old and knows about aluminum wiring. Aluminum wire CAN cause fires. Cheers, Jim

A:  I wouldn't , just checked in my supply of this receptical and is not marked CO/ALR which it should be if was approved for Aluminum wire. . I dont see that this brand in the Decora line makes one for Aluminum wire. Receptacles are specifically designed to work with aluminum conductors and are identified by CO/ALR stamped on the device.

A:  If your service is aluminum and not copper you are able to install using aluminum. You should use NoLox on the terminals so no deterioration occurs as splicing dissimilar metals can cause deterioration of the wires making for lose connections.
