Q:Can I use this to insulate my concrete enclosed crawl space walls? It?s completely dry now but will insulation cause it to condensate? The area needs to be heated to about 40-50 degrees to keep pipes from freezing. Do I need a barrier first?

Answer This Question
A: Hello Lisa, To insulate a crawl space wall you must first lay a strong vapor barrier over the floor that is sealed at any seams and sealed to the walls about 12” up from the floor. The insulation can be attached to the sill plate using long cap head screws or long cap head nails. Vapor retarder for the insulation is not needed in this application. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:what is the STC - soundproofing rating? What is the difference in the STC between R-15,and R-23

Answer This Question
A: Hello JReed, Owens Corning Fire and Sound Guard Plus is effective for acoustical control. Insulation, by itself does not have an STC rating. The overall acoustical control would be based on all components in the assembly. If you call 1-800-Get-Pink (438-7465) and provide your entire assembly, we can provide a STC rating for your assembly. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:Is drywall required or would this provide sufficient fire protection? Could we install shiplap directly to the studs versus putting up drywall and then shiplap on top of the drywall?

Answer This Question
A: I use this beneath shiplap on a cabin in Maine. The whole point was to avoid dusty drywall and itchy fiberglas. Works great, and stays in place easily even on ceilings without the need to secure it. What a time and irritation saver. And fireproof too, even for use around stovepipe wall penetration (thimble).

Q:What is the NRC of this insulation?

Answer This Question
A: To be quite honest, I don't know how to interpret this data, but this looks like the datasheet you're probably looking for:
https://cdn.thermafiber.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/NRC%20Data%20Sheet.pdf
Less quantitative than the above, but based on personal experience, it's "pretty darn good." I put it in a cabin, and it dramatically decreased the volume of the generator running just outside.

Answer This Question
A: Hello Christian, We do not recommend painting Thermafiber products. Thermafiber knows that when the material is painted, the flame spread characteristics may vary from the published information. The paint is a potential fuel source and may increase the surface burning characteristics of the material. Thank you for your inquiry!
