A: No. Type S Mortar will not withstand high temperatures. Sakrete High Heat Mortar is rated for high temperatures.

Q:I am building a bbq i am using cinder blocks for the outer layer and fire bricks for the inner layer. Will this motar be able to hold up to these temps.

A: Sorry, but we have no formula to convert Type S Mortar into a Type M Mortar. Type M has more masonry cement than the Type S. You may have to make a custom mix altogether. A Type M Mortar formula can be found online.

A: As a caution mortar mixes are designed for wall applications only and to be installed at a maximum 1/2" in thickness. Typically when we are asked for the yield in cubic yards for this material, the project itself is a floor application. A: Rule of thumb is 2/3 ft3 per 80lbs bag.
For one yd3 (27ft3), you'll need: 27(ft3) / 0.667(ft3/bag) => 18 bags.
