Please consult your local electrician.
The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

Q:Can this be buried with or without conduit? if not what equal gage wire can?

Answer This Question
A: No, SER cable is not allowed to be installed below grade whether or not conduit is used. You should be looking at 4/0-4/0-4.0-2/0 MHF (Mobile Home Feeder) which is direct burial rated. Another option would be to use 4/0 Al Type XHHW conductors in conduit.

Q:What do those numbers mean?
by|Jul 10, 2017

Answer This Question
A: The numbers represent the size of the four conductors in the cable. There are 3 - 4/0 conductors and 1 - 2/0 conductor. The 4/0 conductors are insulated and intended to be current carrying conductors and the 2/0 conductor is bare and intended to be the grounding conductor. SER cable is available with either copper or aluminum conductors, this product has aluminum conductors.

Answer This Question
A: You posted your question under SER cable which cannot be used underground; not direct buried and not in conduit. SER cable can only be used above grade. You should be looking at MHF (Mobile Home Feeder) which will give you the required 4 conductors needed to feed a subpanel. From the description of what you are doing you probably only need a 100 amp subpanel.

Q:What size ser wire is needed for 100amp main panel , from meter to panel?

Answer This Question
A: Currently the NEC allows 4 AWG copper or 2 AWG aluminum for a service conductor protected by a 100 amp breaker. Branch circuits and feeders would require larger 2 AWG Cu or 1/0 AWG Al.

A: The NEC allows either #4 copper or #2 aluminum conductors for 100 amp service entrance wiring. SER cable is not what you want unless you have a disconnect at the meter and you didn't say that you did. You could use #2 aluminum SEU cable. The SER cable where you asked the question is typically used for a 200 amp subpanel. These are very basic answers, I'd suggest you get professional assistance with your project.

Q:can this wire be used from weather head to meter base.are the individual cables uv resistant?what happens with the ground?

Answer This Question
A: This SER cable has more conductors than necessary for your application. You should use SEU cable. The SER cable will also be to big to fit the cable weatherhead.

A: It is recommended to use an Al SEU cable rather than the SER Cable. The SEU cable does not include a ground wire. The jacket and all wires are UV resistant for both SEU and SER cables.
Installation must comply with the NEC and any local requirements.

A: The answer to your question is: no. Mobile Home Feeder is a direct burial rated wire and SER is not. We would suggest ordering our actual Mobile Home Feeder cable (4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 AL MHF model # 28714401). The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC).
