Q:I have a two year old weeping willow. We used loosely tied trot line string (very strong) to prevent large sways while the roots were growing. At the end of the year I thought I removed all the string but I apparently missed one. Would this product be the best treatment for the wound?

A:  Yes, I have used to to seal cable wounds to trees and broken, cut off branches as well.

A:  I would say, "No." This spray (which is similar to tar) should not be used on this type of tree wound because it's actually a foreign substance that might prevent the wound from healing properly. From your two photos this appears to be like a 'puncture' wound except it goes all the way around. I'm surprised the tree is still alive above this 'girdling.' If the string is still deeply embedded into the bark it may not even be advisable to try and remove it -- because that might make the wound worse and open the bark to destructive organisms such as fungus or rots. Probably best to leave the wound alone and give the tree some TLC (watering to keep the soil evenly moist, but not saturated; and fertilizer; actually a WEAK solution of fertilizer when watering might get the nutrients into the root system better than any granular fertilizers applied onto the top of the soil). In other words, do your best to encourage the healing so the tree bark will grow or reoccupy the wound and, hopefully, the cambium (living tissue layer with all the trees vascular structure) -- which is just under the bark -- will come back and the tree will be restored to a condition that approaches 'normal' after a couple of years... and the string -- if it's still embedded -- will become just an unusual but smallish object in the tree's hardwood or heartwood that may not result in a weak spot. Spectracide Pruning Seal is intended for covering the freshly cut surface of a tree where a large limb has been removed (typically all the way back to the trunk); being sure to make such a cut correctly by leaving the bark 'collar' the tree needs to more rapidly grow the bark back over that cut surface. Even so, this pruning seal spray is not necessarily needed if the limb is removed in the Late Fall or during the Winter but, instead, if the limb absolutely must be removed during those times of the year when disease-carrying insects might be attracted to a freshly cut wound (e.g., such as with the beetles that transmit deadly Oak Wilt Disease). I've also used it to cover the top surface and edges of the bark all around on Oak stumps where we had to cut the tree down during those months when the wilt disease can pose a danger (pretty much anytime after the new buds have just barely started to swell in the early Spring to late August or even September here in Michigan. A cut-down Oak tree stump is actually still "alive" (and will send up dozens of new shoots from those bark edges) so I'm thinking that there's a possibility that if that stump tree became infected with the wilt disease it could be transmitted (through its root system) to any or all of the surrounding oaks. Yes, Oak Wilt Disease is really that insidious!

A:  It is the product I have used for years and have never had a problem with in on any of my trees. It is an excellent seal and protector. To avoid a mess I use the spray can.
