Answer This Question

A:  Hi ELJames, Wood strips are sometimes selected over plastic closure strips purely for aesthetic purposes.

Q:How do you attach these to the roof? Palram's website and the documentation provided don't say how to secure these to the purlins prior to putting down the panels. I have previously used the plastic horizontal closure strips and those we nailed/screwed in, but these aren't self explanatory.

A:  You can glue these into place

    by|Jul 26, 2021

A:  As opposed to the RIGID wood or plastic closure strips, these flexible FOAM counterparts are used with the rigid version. They should never take the place of the rigid strips. Foam strips are primarily used for FLASHING especially towards the ends of a roofing application like when plastic roofing panels are attached to one side of a home or building. Coupled with double-sided BUTYL tape for attachment, these foam strips helps ensure rain water does not seep up and around where they are not welcome.

A:  No you don't glue it. You attach with double sided buttle tape then screw in after panels are on top

Q:I used the foam closures on a large patio cover a couple of years ago. I wanted to use the plastic ones as they seemed more rigid and durable but my patio cover is white and wanted it to match and the plastic is brown (not sure why they don't make these in white as well). They foam ones work ok but had the same issues of leakage around the screw points and think this is because its not rigid enough to make a tight connection. I also noticed the strip exposed to the sun is deteriorating and will need to replace this row. The interior ones appear to be ok. So I'm not installing another cover on a separate patio. I got some of the plastic ones as a test and lightly sanded and then used the best plastic bonding paint I could find. After drying for a few days I could still scratch off the paint with my finger nail, with low confidence that these won't start flaking off after a short time. So I debating whether to try the painted plastic or just use the foam again. Any experience or advice with this. Thanks

A:  I don't think the foam strips were made to waterproof your panels at the screw holes. It would depend on the size holes drilled and rubber grommets you used with the screws. I know the few that leak for me is from my installation errors. For me, the strips are a deterrent from insects getting between the panel and interior cover along with any rattle from the wind. I prefer the flexible strips over the hard plastic. Anything you have exposed to the direct sun will degrade over time.

A:  It is not recommended to paint the closure strips. The paint used could chemically affect the polycarbonate panels.

Q:My suntuf roof leaks everywhere. Is there something to do to fix it

A:  I bought the poly acrylic and it is so much better than the PVC type

A:  I had the same problem. I noticed that rain water will stay on the flat peak and run down to the next screw head. Even though I used the prescribed screws with the rubber washer, water would still get under the screw head and drip on the deck. So when I had to replace the suntuf roof due to hail damage (which suntuf covered a pro-rated portion of) I put a dab of clear silicone sealant under each screw washer. That took care of the problem.

A:  Sorry to hear that. I've always overlap with a bead of clear silicone down the overlap first to seal together. And sealing screwers screwed in on high ridge threw support braces with a little silicone to help last. Need good ridge cap if A roof. Hope helps you.

A:  Leaking everywhere and not just 1 or 2 spots tells me the installer did not PRE-DRILL the roof panel holes or OVERTIGHTENED the placement of the roofing screws. If used as wall panels, VALLEYS are used for attachment, closure strips optional. If used for roofing, PEAKS along with RIGID closure strips are utilized and highly recommended. Whether used for walls or roofs, PRE-drilling the holes 1/16th" or 2mm larger the the screw diameter (approx. 2/16th" or 3mm wide) allows the roof panel to expand and contract with the weather while remaining covered by the built-in rubber washers that comes with the recommended 2" screws. Drilling the screws directly into a clean panel risks cracking around the hole, debris obstructing the closure and further damages the panel when it expands and contracts around an already tight opening. If you did all of the above and OVERTIGHTENED the screw attachment just defeated the manufacturers recommendations. When a screw is placed tight enough to cause the panel to dimple places stress on the material ALL THE TIME. Add your summer afternoon rain shower after baking in 100 degree sunshine and your already warped attachment point will buckle and crack in due time.

A:  I experienced similar leaking. I checked the washers on the fasteners I used and some of the holes I predrilled were too big for the washers to cover completely. I might suggest silicone caulk or cutting strips of Ames seam tape for your leaks. (the mastic seals leaks well)

A:  I don't think this foam will fix leaks, not tight fitting enough to seal water out. Your hold down screws have washers ? They will seal out water.

I believe it's worth the investment to find out.
