A: Mine looked terrible too, so I threw them away and purchased white ones. I tried cleaning the copper ones to no avail.

A: Dawn, In it's natural state, copper breaks down in the elements and develops patina. To maintain a shiny look, apply a caw wax immediately after purchasing the cap and re-apply every 3 to 6 months. To remove an already tarnished finish, remove the old coating with mineral spirits and a soft cloth.

A: Yes the wood base is attached and comes with copper cap. There are other copper caps that don’t have a wood base so make sure you are choosing the right model when ordering. The wood base allows the copper cap to sit up and gives a good finish to the post

A: I used the ones with the pressure treated wood and added water seal to them before painting. If you want them to match a cedar post, they could be stained or painted. Cedar should not require any other treatment.

A: Hi MM, we do not carry any similar copper metal high point pyramid post caps in a pressure treated cedar lumbar. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot!

A: Yes, but you will need some type of filler to make the caps fit snugly. I would also suggest using caulk to close the gap once installed to prevent moisture and insects from getting inside the cap.

Q:We bought 24 of these last summer to put on the top of 4x4 posts that surround our garden. In just this one year, over half of them have tarnished and turned black. Unacceptable for spending almost $300 on these tops. Can you help?

A: If you are wanting the caps to stay a clean polished copper you will have to first clean them with a copper cleaner/polish. Wrights makes one that is a cream paste and will not scratch the copper surface. You can all try lemon juice and baking soda but if they are heavily tarnished this may not be effective. Once you have the caps cleaned you will need to give them a clear coat of lacquer to prevent them from oxidizing. You can purchase spray cans of clear coat at HD or an auto supply store. You will have to retreat the caps every few years as the clear coat will weather off. You might consider that one of the beauties of copper is the way it ages and turns colors. Many people install copper because of the beautiful patina it takes on.

A: I sprayed my with Rust Oleum Exterior Clear Coat that won't year due to sunlight, just installed mine and I plan on cleaning and coating every 6 months. If you clean them, use a chemical cleaner and fine steel wool, see attached pic after I buffed mine using a bench grinder with a buffing wheel and polishing rouge - wore through the powder coated copper to the base plastic.

A: In its natural state, copper breaks down in the elements and develops a patina. In general, copper progresses from a natural salmon color to a series of russet browns and grays, and finally to a blue-green or gray-green patina.
To maintain the shiny look, apply a car wax immediately after purchasing the cap, and reapply every 3 to 6 months.
To remove an already tarnished finish, remove the old coating with mineral spirits and grade 0000 steel wool. Buff with grade 0000 steel wool for a satin finish. For a mirror-like finish, apply a car wax, or spray with a clear lacquer or polyurethane and let dry, and then apply a car wax. To encourage a natural patina, remove the lacquer with mineral spirits and grade 0000 steel wool.

A: The caps arrive as polished copper. They do weather rather quickly on their own. Depending where you live the color of the patina the copper turns will vary from a dark brown to a blue green. You can use Oxalic acid to turn the caps a blue green. Oxalic acid is the active ingredient in Thompsons 3 n 1 deck and wood cleaner.

A: Thank you for expressing interest in the 4 in. x 4 in. Pressure-Treated Wood and Copper Post Cap. We recommend applying an exterior-grade construction adhesive liberally to the inside of the cap, then placing the cap firmly over the top of the post.
