Q:Is there a recomended gap between boards when installing them or should i but them up tight? Will they shrink?

Answer This Question

A:  I would leave gaps to let rain run off. Put a nail or screw between the boards or you can eyeball it. I usually leave a 1/8" gap. I've not had a problem with shrinkage.

A:  Most pressure-treated lumber decking that is sold through retailers has high moisture content (meaning it’s wet) — so the boards are swollen. Always butt wet boards tight against each other or leave a minimal gap. Your wet deck boards will contract and create a wider gap as they dry. This could happen in a relatively short period of time (days to weeks) or may take longer depending on your climate and exposure to the sun.

          Answer This Question

A:  You should wait at least 90 days before staining . That gives the lumber time to dry out.

          by|Jun 18, 2020

A:  Pour a few drops of water over the surface. If the water beads, wait; if it quickly seeps into the wood, it's ready to be stained and sealed.

A:  The stores don't usually have a table saw to make rip cuts. They have a panel saw(for cutting plywood shaped things) and a radial arm saw(for making cross-cuts on wood boards). You'll have to contact your local home depot to find out if they can do it. But even if you call and they say they can, they may not actually be able to do it. The only way to know for sure is to go in and ask them to rip something for you.

                    Answer This Question

A:  You will need to contact the prodesk at your nearest Home Depot store. Kiln dried boards can be special ordered. Depending on how many will be ordered depends on how long for delivery. And the price will be more expensive due to the longer process of drying. The prodesk manager will be able to provide you all the information you may need.
